Source: Two 'rogue' workers principally behind IRS targeting of conservatives

Washington (CNN) – The Internal Revenue Service has identified two "rogue" employees in the agency's Cincinnati office as being principally responsible for "overly aggressive" handling of requests by conservative groups for tax-exempt status, a congressional source told CNN.

In a meeting on Capitol Hill, acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller described the employees as being "off the reservation," according to the source. It was not clear precisely what the alleged behavior involved.

  4. just sayin

it sure is a good thing that none of this happened to obama's friends and supporters but to his opponents or happened during an election cycle where obama and the democrats might have benefitted from these groups being put out of commission... wait a minute.

So: a pair of improvisors who were disciplined. Possibly illegal harassment of "tea party" groups by these two was.stopped in May 2012. Sounds like this story is over to me. And I was actually worried about this one.

    Next, conservatives?

Obama adminstration has made it clear that it is open season on their opponents. People in the federal government can use whatever means they have at their disposal to attack Obama's opponents. Anybody that gets caught violating any laws won't get discilined or prosecuted. They will be protected by the rest of the leftist collective hive.

Were was the outrage in 2004 when the IRS did the same thing to the NAACP on President Bush's watch. I'll wait.....

Ok, I've read all the comments, and I say: you gotta prove your conspiracy theories, wingers. You're making assertions without evidence. You say Obama and Biden were behind this? Without evidence to support that claim you sound like Alex Jones.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with what the IRS did. The very same strategy will be used to target US citizens for the enforcement of Obamacare. The IRS will cross reference the voter roles to the IRS system. All samples for audit will come from registered Republicans and Independents. Welcome to the fundamentally transformed America that Obama promised.

"rouge? Commissioner Steven Miller knew about targeting for more than a year.."
    ----
Acting Commissioner Steven Miller arrived only after the real Commissioner Douglas Shulman resigned his
    post early.
Commissioner Douglas Shulman, appointed by GW in 2005, and who testified before the Committee
a year ago on this very subject, and
of course he denied any "targeting" by the IRS, but why didn't he know?
Maybe he did know, set up the "sting" then resigned early and let the chips fall.
    Wouldn't put it past them.
Of course, Shulman could be just another "big dog" not doing his job.
Lois Lerner knew. Of course, she "is a lawyer, not an accountant", and "not very good at math".
Both were on the scene, and neither did their job, or both are in cahoots.
    Far fetched? Maybe, maybe not.

@Dean: "Obama's base is stupid enough to believe this."

And the GOP's base is stupid enough to be once again distracted from the fact that all of the GOP's economic, military and foreign policies are PROVEN FAILURES.

When Obama openly violates laws and refuses to enforce them, then others will do the same. It is called the culture of corruption.

It's wrong to target these groups, but you have to admit, profiling them made sense. So many of these groups – including big names, like American Crossroads – classify themselves as 501(c)4 organizations, which are tax-exempt and are defined in the U.S. tax code as "Civic Leagues, Social Welfare Organizations and Local Associations of Employees."

In reality, they are super PACs, designed to funnel tax-exempt money to chosen candidates and campaigns. For example, in the 2012 election cycle (through November 26, 2013), here are the biggest donors to American Crossroads:

Harold Simmons, Contran Corp. ($20.5 million)
Sheldon Adelson, Las Vegas Sands Corp. ($11.5 million)
Miriam Adelson, Adelson Drug Clinic ($11.5 million)
Bob Perry, Perry Homes ($8.5 million)
Robert Rowling, TRT Holdings, Inc. ($3.5 million)
    Weaver Holdings, Inc. ($3.4 million)

Where's all the outrage from the right about THIS?

Oh, they'll find something, I'm sure.

It's sad and pathetic how the GOP relies on the ignorance and fear of its base (and voter suppression) to win elections ... sadder and more pathetic still is how those base voters don't have the stones to accept they are being played for fools ...

But you don't understand: the lack of any evidence whatsoever to prove these conspiracy theory accusations is what proves that they're covering it up.

@Kinpo: Speaking of feigning outrage and refusing to see the reality of the Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice policies, during GW's 8-year reign of error, there were 54 attacks on diplomatic targets that killed 13 Americans (yes, this included 8 attacks on targets in Iraq).

How many hearings on embassy security were held? 3

How much outrage was spewed over this by righties? None

The GOP base posting here suffers from what I call the "sweater theory." If they were ever to admit that the GOP and folks like Limbaugh, Fox, Hannity, etc., are lying to them now about the IRS, Benghazi, President Obama being a secret Marxist Socialist Muslim, then they'd have to consider they've been played for fools for years. Once you pull that thread, their whole world unravels.

Easier for these folks to maintain their delusions than accept reality. Truly pathetic ...
