Obama: I didn't know about IRS targeting before media reports

(CNN) - President Barack Obama said Thursday that he "did not know anything" about an IRS inspector general's report prior to media reports on it in recent days that focused public attention on the tax agency's targeting of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status.

it's called plausible deniablity. he is knowingly kept out of the loop with only private verbal updates from the closest of his leftist cabal. no paper or email trail to be found.

It is now obvious that this president is clueless as well as corrupt!!! How can you know what YOUR administration is doing and the reports it is putting out? Obama does not even have to read them himself cause I am sure he thinks that is below him, but at least have someone in your administration read it and give you the cliff notes! Obama, you can understand cliff notes, correct? This just gets scarier and scarier!!!!

If you truly believe in the US Constitution as much as you claim, then you would recognize that people are innocent until proven guilty. The burden of proof is not on the White House.

so when you create a climate of open lawlessness and intimidation of your political opponents, are you not responsible for the actions of all your followers that take the ball, using the very same tactics, to help you and your cause? of course you are. this lawless behavior has been allowed and encouraged by obama and now he feins shock about it happening.

obama gets exactly what he wants, targeting of his opposition, then he acts mad about it acting like he had no idea, then he announces the resigninction of an official who was going to resign any way, now he gets to appoint a new director of the irs.

What kind of a president relies on the media to govern? He's either lying – or he's the most incompetent president ever! He's both!!

The Bush administration broke plenty of laws, beginning with the GOP Congressional Caucus publicly calling on the IRS to audit the NAACP because their then president made remarks critical of the administation's war policies.

The only political group against the US Constitution in this country is the right wing. They want to revise/repeal the 14th Amendment, the 15 Amendment, and a couple of others.

This is dumb. Some teaparty folks file for tax exemption en-mass. The IRS knows it's BS and asks for quite a bit of information as there isn't a clear precedent.

If I was looking for tax exemption under a political party i'd expect scrutiny too. What is the problem?

Lie much, Mr. President? I love how this guy totally did not answer definitively about whether he knew of the IRS targeting, and the mainstream media not only accepts–BUT SPINS–this as "he didn't know." If you actually look at what he said, "I can assure you that I certainly did not know anything about the IG report before the IG report had been leaked … to the press"...well NO DUH you didn't know about the IG report before it was leaked. That is not what was asked...the reporter asked if you knew about IRS targeting conservatives before the IG report, not if you knew about the IG report before it was leaked. This guy's total non-answer reeks of deception. Where there is smoke there is fire!!! How about your savior now liberals?? Most transparent administration yeah right!!

the problem is that none of obama political supporters were similarly targeted. only obama's opponents. are you lefties willing to accept similar treatment when repblicans hold power? didn;t think so.

When Republicans use the filibuster to prevent any debate, much less a vote, how would the President accomplish things like job creation, healthcare reform, and improvements to our revenue base? When half of the team WANTS to lose the coach must explain that situation to the fans...

Yes, Obama supporters WERE targeted! Watch the news, get informed....and NOT FAUX! The IRS was operating under guidelines.....some of the "conservative" groups were asking for exemptions on the basis of being non-partisan, when in fact they WERE! We need to make very specific the guidelines, but YES, Liberal groups were also targeted!
The Rs eat their own.....and look like they "protesteth too much."

No, the problem is that when you put down for your Mission Statement that you want to reduce the size of government, reduce taxes, and eliminate government regulations, that sounds like a politically oriented group. Wouldn't you say?

Hey Larry L, you mean the same president who wants to go around the democratic process of voting and issue executive orders? You know who issues executive orders? Dictators and tyrants. This is not an excuse for ANY executive orders, I'm sure you'll come back with "Bush did it too" yeah I know you guys are still living in the past and blaming all the bad stuff on Bush 5 years later. For the record, II do not agree with the idea of using them and NO president should be allowed to issue them. If you can't reach across the aisle and get people to work together, then you can't govern (the main job of a politician...outside of getting re-elected) and you probably shouldn't be POTUS.

Funny, in the wake of the IRS admitting it targeted Tea Party and other conservative groups applying for 501(c)(4) status that Lois Lerner herself, signed the approvals granting tax-exempt status to Organizing for Action (the "charity" that came from Obama's re-election campaign).

According to the organization’s filings, Lerner approved the foundation’s tax status within a month of filing, hhmmm – something here does indeed stink to high heaven when you have some of the targeted conservative organizations that applied waiting up to 2 -3 years. Dont even try the "yes but they weren't denied" nonesense, that is not the point because that was not the ultimate goal of the delays – it was to intimidate and delay beyond the 2012 election cycle. Every single thing Obama touches has political motivation, he is not fit to be president.

Of course not! They were probably on the up-and-up and were quickly cleared. We all know that the tea/patriot groups were piggybacking on Citizens United and looking for tax-exempt status even tho' they were likely to be actively engaged in political activity – which prevents approval of that status. That they refused to (or couldn't) provide the requisite donor lists (required for approval) is not the faullt of the IRS and added to the delays. This is typical GOP operating procedure. Quit wasting time/money on useless and meaningless things – like the 34th attempt to repeal ACA – and focus on getting the business of the country in order. Oh wait, that's not you goal is it.

To them, a politically oriented group is Mothers Against Drunk Driving, but the Tea Party groups that spell out their intentions in a mission statement are not. Don't bother pointing that out to them, they will forever play the victim card.
