McCain: 'Why the hell' do iPhone apps need updating?

(CNN) - After questioning Apple CEO Tim Cook in a congressional hearing Tuesday, Sen. John McCain ran out of time and didn't get to ask one pressing question on his mind.

"What I really wanted to ask is why the hell I have to keep updating the apps on my iPhone all the time and why you don't fix that," McCain, an active Tweeter, said–prompting some laughs in the room.

"Sir, we're trying to make them better all the time," Cook responded in kind.

Lawmakers grilled Apple executives over their company's tax strategy, examining why Apple shifts income to an Irish subsidiary to avoid paying U.S. taxes.

Apple officials said the company moved the money to its overseas operations, such as those in Ireland, not to avoid taxes but because of the growth of Apple's sales overseas.

Michigan Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, and McCain, the committee's ranking member, both started the hearing with withering criticism of Apple's tax practice.

– CNN's Ashley Killough and CNNMoney.com's Senior Writer Chris Isidore contributed to the report.

Answer he should have given: "Because that's how we feed the miniature hamsters inside the phone that keep it running."

Someone take McPampers phone from him before he breaks it...he can go back to slide rules, protractors and an abacus like when he was a kid.

It's called capitalism John. Lawless capitalism. They find ways to ding you for money with each update. It's a multibillion scheme most computer/communication corporations engage in 24-7. They do it because Congress lets them do it.

An active Tweeter? I'm impressed. Five years ago on the campaign trail against Obama he bragged he was computer illiterate.

"Get off my lawn, Apple!" McCain added menacingly.

In truth, though, it's a good question.

"Tell me what Apple has done that is illegal?" – Sen. Rand Paul
    ------------––
Technically what they're doing is corporate tax evasion
    -----–
technically you don't know what you are talking about. it is actually called minimizing your taxes which is exactly what every well run company does. contrary to leftists beliefs, these companies do not exist to fund the ever growing government bureacracy. they are not piggy banks to be raided at your leisure. every individual does, or should be doing, the very same thing.

the money (POST TAX) to create the company was provided by private investors looking to get a return on their investment. that money is how a lot of people live in the retirement years, you know, the 401ks that you lefties are always bragging about doing so well with obama.

these hearings are nothing less than a democrat shakedown of these corporations. i hope several of them pack up and leave to teach you leftists a lesson. of course, the people you pretend to care about will pay the real price for your leftist lust for other peoples money.

This Senator should be asked why he did support the war in Iraq and why he wasted trillions on that war and why he wants us to get into another mess in Syria? The less we give to these jokers the less they have to spend.

John McCain stated during his disastrous and ill fainted presidential campaign, which was the only truthful stated that he made. McCain stated "I"m computer literate and the economy is not my strong point"! The world pasted McCain up and he needs to retire or the GOP must demand his resignation.

I am reading that TIm Cook walked all over those clowns at the hearing today. Every thing that Apple did was legal. I resent the implication by innuendo that Apple has committed a crime.

Didn't '60 Minutes' do an expose of these offshore tax evasions by U.S. corporations about two years ago? This is old news.

Except, of course, that the old men in Congress probably didn't update their apps so they didn't hear about corporate tax cheaters until now.
