Washington (CNN) – The Internal Revenue Service official overseeing the unit that targeted conservative groups for several years beginning in the spring of 2010 has been placed on administrative leave, according to Congressional sources in both parties.
Lois Lerner was the director of exempt organizations when the agency filtered applications for tax exempt status for words such as "patriot" and "tea party."
She publicly revealed the targeting two weeks ago in her answer to a planted question at a bar association event in Washington shortly before an inspector general report on the matter was made public.
The agency's new acting director announced late Thursday he was appointing Ken Corbin, who was deputy director of unit which processes tax returns and payments, to oversee the exempt organizations unit.
Lerner appeared before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday and stated she had not broken any laws or agency regulations. She then invoked her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and declined to answer questions.
Republicans questioned whether she waived that right by making her opening statement.
Committee Chairman Darrell Issa will call her back to testify before the committee, his spokesman said earlier on Thursday.
So, the emerging theme on this thread is the outrage over Ms. Lerner being on PAID leave.
How's that non-unionized, "right-to-work" existence working out for you, conservatives? You sound like screaming children at a grocery store while Mom puts back the cupcakes on the shelf.
Meanwhile, we don't know if Lerner did anything wrong, yet. Allow me to mix metaphors: you're acting like a bunch of ignorant villagers with torches and pitchforks in a bad monster-movie.
If they don't pay her she will talk, Get the picture? Now do you really think they want to take her pension and salary?
Hush money. And she probably has a nice new position waiting for her.
Rudy nyc mentioned that "laws don't have anything to do with it"'. Maybe he should ask his buddy Allen Dershowitz, the most far left wing liberal, constitutional lawyer, who was on Fox News yesterday and stated that according to LAW
she waived her 5th amendment rights with her statement. It is all about the law..
I don't know what it continues to amaze me that republicans who claim to love the constitution, are so willing to take away the rights given by it, when its some one else
Data Driven: "You sound like screaming children at a grocery store while Mom puts back the cupcakes on the shelf."
Thanks for the visual (and laugh of the day)!
Those who hate the second ammendment say it is outdated and the constitution is a living breathing document. It seems Liberals only love the constiution when they can hide behind it to cover up their criminal activities and depriving conservative groups of equal treatment under the law.
She has every right to use 5th amendment. We have every right to fire her. The constitution does not say bad people can't be fired.
I'm a liberal and I don't hate the 2nd Amendment. I, and many on my side, simply believe that closing gun-show loopholes against background check isn't infringing on that Constitutional right. Yesterday, Issa declared, ignorantly, that Lerner's Fifth Amendment right was no longer valid. See the difference?
To all those who want to see Lerner's head on the block, kindly remember that we have a fundamental legal principle in this country, namely that you are innocent until proven guilty. Republicans have amply demonstrated that they only apply this principle when it is convenient to them, and Mr. issa (or should I say "Mr. Viper"?) should please remember the fate of Joe McCarthy and his witch-hunts. If Issa cannot conduct himself in a more appropriate manner, perhaps he should leave the senate and go back selling car alarms.
