(CNN) - The State Department spokeswoman who earlier this month found herself in the middle of the controversy surrounding key revisions to the Benghazi talking points appears to be in line for a promotion.
The White House announced Thursday that President Barack Obama intends to nominate Victoria Nuland as assistant secretary for European and Eurasian affairs, a position that requires Senate confirmation.
Nuland, who has served as the State Department spokesperson from 2011 until earlier this spring, came under fire from Obama administration critics last week after leaked e-mails revealed she raised concerns with the CIA-prepared talking points on the deadly terror attack last September 11.
Specifically, Nuland asked that references to al Qaeda and previous CIA warnings about threats posed to U.S. diplomats in Libya be scrubbed from the document that was used by U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice on news talk shows to explain the administration's understanding of events in Libya.
Critics contend Nuland's request was part of an administration cover-up of the
true cause of the Benghazi attacks to avoid political fallout ahead of the 2012 election.
The White House has said the State Department was instead concerned with drawing conclusions about the attack before an investigation into the matter had been fully conducted.
Nuland is a career foreign service officer who has served in senior posts around the world and at the State Department, in addition to her stint as the agency's top spokeswoman.
Wow, what a controversy, that Benghazi. Emails and such. Uncertainty about al-Qa'ida's involvement and such. I'm glad I'm not a winger. Such a paucity of materials to work with.
I guess in the public sector, performance has absolutely nothing to do with career advancement or promotions.
You know as well as others Nuland won't be nominated by the bipartisan crowd in the Senate and it'll probibly stop there as well because Pres.Obama wants her simple as that!!Almost every nominee that the president presented has been either shot down or obstructed to a halt in hopes of said nominees quiting because they're not employed, not working most times during the vesting process and can't sustain a long wait sometimes for almost a year for said process to be finalized for that position in government...And this will be worse for Nuland because of her involvement in Benghazi as well!!
Amazing consistency here. Promote those who have helped to mislead the American People. Obama leadership 101. Is everyone awake yet?
Why pick up unnecessary fight with the senate are you all drunk?
Do a bad job get a promotion.
I like it how Obama assign these people post in his administration when the GOP have issues with them. Goes to show you what Obama thinks of the GOP witch hunt on these recent issues.
Of course she'll be promoted. She provided for the total cover up of Hillary Clinton's involvement in the death of 4 Americans in Benghazi.
Benghazi: A tragic loss but not even remotely a scandal. Multiple hearings and investigations and we now know what the secrecy was about. The Benghazi outpost was not a consulate but a CIA operation arming Syrian rebels fighting to overthrow the Assad regime. We have been supporting them at least since 2006. Commanding General Ham reported that Ambassador Stevens, likely due to the secrecy of the operation, refused multiple offers of an increased military presence at the site. A CIA Predator drone was immediately launched. Within 25 minutes a CIA/military team was launched and joined diplomatic security agents already at the outpost. They were joined by a second CIA/military force and were additionally reinforced by Libyan military with more than 50 vehicles. Within 15 minutes of the initial assault, the outpost was set ablaze. Stevens and Smith could not be reached due to the intense smoke and fire. Hours later and miles away, two responding soldiers were killed in a second 11 minute mortar attack while they were manning a machine gun atop the CIA base used for evacuation. In the end, more than 60 of the attacking militants were killed, the bodies of our dead were retrieved, and 32 Americans were safely evacuation and on a plane home in hours.
President Obama needs to face up to the fact that his staff including Hillary Clinton, Jay Carney, Susan Rice and Victoria Nuland are all guilty as sin for ignoring the distress calls from Libya. They ALL need to be held accountable including Obama. Where was he that night? Where was Hillary that night? Definitely not answering the 3 am call! This will definitely go down in the records as the worst presidency ever. Even Nixon was better. At least he admitted he made a mistake and stepped down when impeached. Clinton didn't and Obama won't. He has too many cronies and main stream media on his side! The Commander in Chief was AWOL!
If she is not FIRED then Obama is a total fraud!
Why are we still talking about this?
These hearings should be fun!
As long as she has the support of the Secretary of State , why not !
You can BET Ms. Nuland earned this promotion on her bacrk in a figurative way. Her covered not only for her boss but her bosses boss as well. lies and lack of forthrightness. Shame on this administration for even dreaming they can pull this off. I sure hope the Senate has the guts to vote her down, period. No filibuster, just a bipartisan beat down. I doubt they'll have the stones to do that however.
Can you get over with this socalled Benghazi and pass JOBS-BILL.
