Holder involved in decision to ask for search warrant for reporter's private emails

Washington (CNN) - Attorney General Eric Holder was involved in the Justice Department's decision to seek a search warrant for Fox News reporter James Rosen's private e-mails, a Justice official told CNN.

The decision to apply for the search warrant was vetted at the department's highest levels, including Holder, the official said, although the decision to issue a warrant was made by a federal magistrate judge.

The Obama administration's aggressive posture against leaks to reporters on national security matters has come under scrutiny recently as probes of Rosen and Associated Press reporters have come to light.

It prompted Obama to announce on Thursday he has directed Holder to review federal guidelines for investigating leaks and reporters. That review will include assembling a panel of media representatives.

Justice Department officials dug into the phone records of AP reporters, including work, cell, and home lines, the news agency said earlier this month. It said investigators were looking into its account of a foiled plot to bomb a U.S. airliner in May 2012.

AP reporters were never labeled as suspected criminals, but an FBI affidavit used to obtain the warrant for Rosen's e-mails described him as potentially being an "aider and abettor and/or co-conspirator" to the crime of disclosing government secrets.

That case centers on a 2009 Fox News report on classified intelligence about North Korea.

No charges have been brought against Rosen or Fox News.

Obama said Thursday he was "troubled by the possibility that leak investigations may chill the investigative journalism that holds government accountable."

    Of course he was.

More and more, it looks like he was targeted because he was Jewish.

So what? It was a serious investigation involving espionage from North Korea. I would expect Holder to be involved.

Before y'all start hollering about "freedom of the press", you need to actually read about this case. (You're not getting the details here.). Rosen was getting info from a North Korean stooge. And maybe giving info, too. A grand jury indicted the stooge for espionage. Read all about it. Not here, apparently.

I said maybe Holder didn't know about Fast and Furious like he said. But now I'm going to assume he was lying then too.

he lied to congress, we now know he signed the search warrant for james rosen’s personal emails, but why should we expect the truth from this protected fool. he is taking his cues from a president who in his own words doesnt know whats going on, he gets his information like the rest of us, from the network news. no one in this administration knows who is at fault and no one is responsible for anything. this is the best case i have seen for affirmative action and promoting incompetence, NO ONE GETS FIRED, we can do away with all qualifications and go on our merry way towards utopia.

Holder was appointed to be the bag man and he's just doing the job he was hired to do.

Anybody – reporter, Soldier, or politician who willfully releases classified information should go to jail. At this level it's a treasonous act. Those "leaks" cost Servicemembers and members of the intelligence community their lives.

Fox News has openly worked to harm our Federal government for many years. This is an organization operating with Ruphert Murdoch's sense of honor... none.

Let's be clear, this is a DOJ who is friends with Obama and at the behest of the President conducting an investigation of the DOJ actions...that like handing a robber keys to the bank vault and asking him to lock up after he's done and make sure no one left the door unlocked....brilliant!

So the racist holder was caught lying. And now he gets to investigate himself. What a pathetic excuse for an administration.

I'm not going to make any sweeping generalizations except to say that had Clinton simply approved the warrants the FBI wanted when they asked for them in 9-11, we would be in a lot better shape today than we are. They wanted to plant listening devices in motel rooms rented by Muhammed Atta in Boston. Had those devices been planted, the FBI and NSA would have known a lot more about the 9-11 plans than they already did. Clinton erred on the other side of the issue to a fault. Maybe Obama remembered that fact and erred on the other side of the issue.

Eric Holder seems to have more controversies than any AG I have known in my life. So far no one holds him accountable for his mistakes. This is a biggie and against the press, and what makes this worse is that he recently told congress this was done at a lower level and he was not involved. He lied. Time for Holder to go, as power is going to his head.

Until Holder faces charges of illegal weapons charges, I cannot see how this man could possibly be in charge of a pencil. He has no: merit, morals, or ethics and has lost complete credibility in the eyes of the public.
