Poll: Most still opposed to forced spending cuts

Washington (CNN) - The forced spending cuts remain unpopular with Americans, according to a new national poll.

The ABC News/Washington Post survey's Friday release comes as four federal agencies shut down for the day due to the forced spending cuts, known inside the Beltway as the sequester.

The poll indicates that 56% of Americans disapprove of the forced spending cuts, basically unchanged from the 57% who said the same thing in an April ABC News/Washington Post poll and the 53% in their March survey.

There's little partisan divide in the poll, with 54% of Republicans and 59% of Democrats disapproving of the cuts. But income appears to be a factor in feelings about the sequester. Fifty-two percent of those making $100,000 or more support the cuts. That number falls to 37% for those making $50,000-$100,000 and down to 29% for lower income Americans.

Friday employees at the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Environmental Protection Agency and the White House Office of Management and Budget are furloughed for the day. They include nearly 115,000 workers, or more than 5% of the 2 million-strong federal workforce, who are being forced to spend Friday at home without pay. It was triggered by the March 1 federal spending cuts that shaved $85 billion from government agencies and programs through Sept. 30.

According to the poll, conducted before the furloughs, 61% said they were not personally feeling any negative impact from the forced spending cuts, with 37% saying they felt a negative impact.

The ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted May 16-19, with 1,001 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

- CNN's Paul Steinhauser and Jennifer Liberto contributed to this report.

Not true. Most sensible people KNOW you can't spend more than you take in. If we are going to give 47% of the country a free ride, on taxes.......then we have to cut spending. It doesn't take an accountant to figure that out.

Why? So you can bellyache and complain when job cuts are made to defense contractors?

By the way.... half of the forced spending cuts WERE to defense... but you knew that.

And yet, smarty pants, your comment is still essentially a non-sequitur because the article, the poll and the sequester issue are not about WHETHER we need to make cuts, but HOW those cuts should be made.

There needs to be a review by each department head as to what is and isn't working. Everything needs a review before it is cut or included in the next budge. The DoD has started this and everyone else needs to give it a try as well. There also needs to be a person or group that oversees a review that has programs that cover the same subject by different departments to eliminate overlap. This is more constructive. Once these reviews are done, send a copy to be entered in to both the House & Senate records.

Get your facts straight! Do you not recall "Mittens" tried to make that argument? The 47% you are referring to are the elderly (people on SS), veterans (on VA benefits) and those on unemployment. EVERYBODY THAT HAS A JOB pays FICA or federal taxes. Its the folks that have tax havens over seas, corporate jets etc., are avoiding paying corporate taxes. Get a brain instead of listening to Faux News foolishness. Now go forth and pay your fair share while encouraging others to do so. I pay mine and glad to do it.

Should be obvious. He claimed the poll was untrue and then began rambling on about irrelevant crap which, even if taken as true, doesn't disprove this poll.

Bridges are falling into rivers people. Infrastructure needs spending...not cuts. To build and maintain you must spend. These GOPers are reminding me of European austerityfreaks that are only now realizing you must invest in yourself to grow.

It is so easy to spend as any family knows- The trick is to either not spend beyond your budget- An unknown concept in DC_- or be ready to face hard times and unpleasant discipline hen the bill comes due as it always will.... This is not a poll question but a problem caused by DC and they need to take the political hits and unfortunatly we the citizens will take hits because we elected such a stupid group over the decades.

You realize, of course, that Obama has issued several executive orders that have instructed the federal government's agencies to do everything you were trying to imply isn't being done...right?

    @Rick McDaniel:
47% of the country is NOT getting a free ride!!
Do you consider Social Security payments to retirees a free ride??? They paid for those checks with the sweat on their brows and SS taxes taken out of every single paycheck they have ever earned.
Do you think they should be paying income tax on those SS checks even thought they already paid income tax on that money when they earned it???
The only ones getting a free ride are all the members of Congress!!! Lets start cutting there!!! NO FEDERAL PENSIONS EXCEPT FOR MILITARY MEMBERS WHO HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED. DESK JOCKEYS IN THE PENTAGON DESERVE NO FEDERAL PENSIONS!!!

So if you don't care, why should you even argue a position? Do you just like to see what your incorrect, unimportant, useless arguments look like on a blog...and Yes, I do get it....You've got nothing to offer nor no credible position...have a nice day if possible for a person with zero compassion for anyone other than themselves.

The sequester should be replaced by chained CPI for entitlement programs, cuts to the defense budget, and eliminating loopholes in the tax code.
