How McCain's daughter found out her dad was in Syria

(CNN) – Sen. John McCain slipped into civil war-torn Syria Monday to meet with rebels battling Bashar al Assad's regime.

So how did his daughter Meghan learn about her father's visit?

On Twitter, of course.

Meanwhile, one of McCain's top allies on Capitol Hill, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, poked some fun at his friend.

Mouaz Moustafa, with the Washington-based Syrian Emergency Task Force that helped plan McCain's trip, said the Arizona Republican entered Syria through Turkey, and remained in the country for several hours.

While in Syria, McCain met with Gen. Salem Idris, the leader of the Supreme Military Council of the Free Syrian Army. He spent about an hour meeting with Free Syrian Amry commanders from various parts of the country including Aleppo, Homs, and Idlib.

McCain is the leading voice in Congress for a greater U.S. role in ending Syria's civil war, which has been waged for more than two years. He has suggested establishing "safe zones" for Syria's rebels and taking out the regime's air assets, along with providing lethal weapons to Syria's opposition.

I voted for McCain in 2008 but am glad this nut did not get elected. Let the Arabs kill each other. If anything, we need to encourage them killing each other like Reagan did in the Iran-Iraq war. Supply both sides with weapons.

I would like to know who McCain thinks he is!!!! What if they would have kidnapped him or even killed him.....stupid–plain stupid on his part. And then what--we are to risk more lives of our soldiers who have had enough of this crap. McCain should be reprimanded for this kind of behavior.

The only reason he went to Syria is that he has Old-Timers disease and was going to Arizona. Probably took him some time to figure that out, you know sand everywhere...little brown people...

With all the men around, you need to ask your mother why, did she choose a loud mouth, bad tempered, old fart, who was running around on his first wife, when he met her? Wasn't McCain's first wife disabled? Why put up with that, when you can have a rich, not so bright, young woman who'll put up with your crap? The people of Arizona, aren't any smarter than McCain's wife, or daughter.

I think we should have a congressional panel (make that 2!) investigate (and add an independent counsel investigation of course) on why the Obama administration allowed this to happen and what was negotiated in Syria on behalf of the American people by someone with absolutely no power to carry out any such negotiations . Oh… and remember to check those talking points before releasing them to Rice this time, will you?

John McCain is a guy I wish I could still respect and honor. And I hope ANYONE, including him, can help find Syria a way forward.

But he needs to retire, he has become more clown than hero.

He brought Sarah Palin into the national political process, ran to the right of JD Hayworth to retain his seat and had no clue during the financial crisis. The straight talk express has lost its credibility.

Um, Daniel, advocating mass slaughter of your enemies is not a very good advertisement in favor of your belief system. (Or nonbelief system, as the case may be.)

And Anthony in California, considering three of Meghan's siblings either have served or are currently serving in the military, implying that the McCains are hypocrites on that issue won't get you very far. What have YOU done to serve your country, by the way?

I remember that Sen. McCain went to Bengazi during rebellion! He asked for and got everything from Barack Obama. BUT when new leaders that we helped couldn't secure our Embassy and Consulate in Bengazi and when our brave 4 americans were killed, HE FORGOT EVERYTHING HE SAID ABOUT rebels in Bengazi. The impression was that Bengazi was supposed to be safe and secure but it turned out to be one of the dangerous areas where terrorists are happy with american and european weapons. As Reagan said" Here he goes again" McCain is doing to same thing and when the weapons will be used by terrrorists, he will call his friends Graham to blame Obama for everything. How can he forgot Bengazi that he introduced to the world?

John McCain has been nothing but a "Hotdog" since his time in the Navy, possibly before.

He destroyed 2-Navy jets, with his clowning around; finally, he got shot down, captured – the 3rd jet destroyed – and became a "Hero" to the American public, simply because he spent the better part of 4-years in a prison cell.

No one in the world gets "Hero" status for "Hot dogging", losing 3-Navy jets – some $30+ Million each – and then being captured by the enemy.

If anything, he is an uncontrollable child, desperately seeking attention...

Syria should be declared off limits to all americans. John will side with anybody that wants to go to war. John the war monger has a taste for death and destruction as long as it does not injure him. We need to clean the house and senate and elect some people that are willing to do the hard work of getting the American political system working again. Politicians are so lazy it is embarassing. Politicians work about one third of the year. We need to make them make lesson plans. No original thoughts.....just political bias reaction.

Let's take care of our country and our citizens. Stay out of Syria. Besides, once the USA helps, whomever gains control in Syria will turn on us anyway.

I have a lot of respect for John McCain. He is a vet and a war hero. I believe he is a man of honor. He works across the aisle in the Senate. However he is wrong on a lot of issues. Syria is one. The rebels are savages and prove as much regularly. Just recently there have been videos of a rebel eating the heart of a regular Syrian Army soldier and an execution of several Syrian army men who had given up or been captured. I'm not saying that the Assad regime is without blame but I think there is a strong possibility that Syria gets worse for the US if the rebels get control.
