House panel subpoenas State Department over Benghazi

Washington (CNN) - A congressional committee on Tuesday subpoenaed documents and communications from current and former top State Department officials related to the development of "talking points" used by the Obama administration to explain the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, last September.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee sought information from 10 people, including the agency's No. 2 official, the top aide to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and the department's former spokeswoman, the panel's chairman, Darrell Issa, said in a statement.

First lady welcomes Superstorm Sandy-affected students to White House garden

(CNN) – On the same day President Obama paid a visit to a rejuvenated Jersey Shore, first lady Michelle Obama welcomed students from the Hurricane-ravaged region to help harvest the White House vegetable garden.

"Many of your schools got damaged, but despite that you guys are still going to school every day and eating healthy. And you guys managed to get through the school year way on top. We are very proud of you," the first lady said under a hot Washington sun on the South Lawn of the White House.

Obama channels Springsteen in touring Jersey storm recovery

(CNN) - "Down the shore, everything's all right," President Barack Obama declared Tuesday on his return to New Jersey's devastated coast seven months after Superstorm Sandy caused billions of dollars in damage there.

The line from the Tom Waits song "Jersey Girl," popularized by local hero Bruce Springsteen, was the main theme of the joint visit by Obama and Gov. Chris Christie to survey recovery efforts and encourage people to hit the beaches this summer.

Weiner climbs in polls in NYC mayoral race

(CNN) - Anthony Weiner's making gains in his bid for New York City mayor this year, according to a new poll conducted after the former congressman announced his candidacy last week.

And a Marist poll released Tuesday also indicates that a majority of New York City voters say Weiner deserves a second chance. Weiner was in his seventh term in Congress, representing parts of the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn, when he resigned from the House of Representatives in 2011 amid scandal over lewd photos sent via Twitter.

White House had heads up on McCain's Syria trip

(CNN) – White House officials were notified that Sen. John McCain was planning to visit with rebels in Syria ahead of his trip to the war-torn nation, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Tuesday.

"We were aware that Sen. McCain was going to make this trip," Carney said, referring other questions about the administration's role in the visit to the State Department. He added the White House was looking forward to "speaking with Sen. McCain upon his return to learn more."

New York (CNNMoney) - The IRS has a big target on its back these days. Its leaders have been pummeled on Capitol Hill over inappropriate targeting of Tea Party groups applying for tax-exempt status.

And some Republicans say they want the IRS to stop issuing and enforcing rules related to Obamacare at least until a federal investigation of the case is over.

CNN: Arizona mother sits in Mexico jail wrongly accused of smuggling drugs, family says

An Arizona mother of seven is being held in a Mexican jail, accused of smuggling about 12 pounds of marijuana, a charge her family vehemently denies. A Mexican state official also believes Yanira Maldonado was framed. On Tuesday, Maldonado may find out whether she will go free or remain jailed until a trial. "She's innocent," Maldonado's daughter, Anna Soto, said Monday during an emotional interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "She's an honest good woman. A Christian woman that would never do anything to jeopardize her freedom." Police arrested Maldonado on Wednesday as she and her husband, Gary, were on their way back from a family funeral on a bus.

CNN: Southern California fire burns 1,000 acres; thousands flee

Crews in Southern California struggled to get the upper hand on a fast-moving wildfire in Santa Barbara County early Tuesday. Known as the White Fire, the blaze had already charred some 1,000 acres after getting its start Monday afternoon, U.S. Forest Service spokesman Andrew Madsen said. The flames were 5% contained. The Forest Service expects to have 700 personnel in place Tuesday morning. The Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department evacuated up to 6,000 people from the popular White Rock Campground at the end of the busy Memorial Day weekend as the wildfire advanced, public information officer Kelly Hoover said.
