Holder to meet with news execs

Updated Wednesday 5/29 at 10:46 a.m. ET

(CNN) - Attorney General Eric Holder will begin meetings with representatives of media organizations this week as part of his review of how the federal government handles leak investigations, a Justice Department official said Wednesday.

The meetings with chiefs of Washington bureaus will begin Thursday, and will include representatives from a wide range of media outlets, including newspapers, wire services, radio and television broadcasters, and online organizations.

The official said executives and general counsels of media companies would be included in later discussions along with intelligence experts from within the government. Holder and Deputy Attorney General James Cole will participate in the meetings, the official said.

Last week President Barack Obama said he had asked Holder to conduct a review of how the Justice Department investigates media organizations as part of its greater effort to crack down on leaks of classified national security information. Speaking Thursday, Obama said he was "troubled by the possibility that leak investigations may chill the investigative journalism that holds government accountable."

The review comes amid two revelations about the Justice Department seizing journalists' records in attempts to ferret out leakers of secret information.

Phone records of reporters and editors at the Associated Press were seized in an attempt to determine who leaked information about a failed plot against the United States to the news agency.

And records for a Fox News reporter were tracked, along with the reporter's movements within the State Department, in an investigation into leaks surrounding an intelligence report about North Korea.

Some have questioned whether Holder should be responsible for conducting the review, since he was directly involved in the decision to search the Fox reporter's e-mail records.

"You cannot investigate yourself, and I think it's a total conflict of interest," said Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Oklahoma, on CBS's "Face the Nation" Sunday.

CNN's Carol Cratty and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

There is definitely a problem with the Obama administration. Mr. Holder needs to man up and resign, if not then Obama needs to ask him too. How can the American taxpayer have confidence in the top cop of the nation that can miss lead the American People? I personally do not trust him or any one in the White House. The President to often states I learn these fact when HE READ THE PAPER.

The man is doing his job. Something that republikkkans know absolutely nothing about.

You people sat around on your hands while those two war criminals, Bush and Cheney destroyed our country and economy but now you have a problem with the current administration that you set out to destroy from day 1, doing their jobs?

    Republikkkans, the epitome of hypocrisy.

Is this a part of Holder investigating Holder?

holder is the most incompetent clown in the obama adminstration. and now he has gotten caught lying to congress. this idiot should have been fired years ago but obama won't do it because he's one of his buddies. competence is no longer a requirement to hold high office in the country under the obama administration. as long as your ideology is in line with his, you're protected.

Republicans know that if AGHolder keeps digging something dirty will come up and Issa and his collegues can't hide it forever.Republicans think the media can hide behind this amendment crap of free speech with its perfectly clear these media giants and their reporters are courting the line of being treasonistic, espionage publizing secret government info just to advance their companies name at any expense..Remember posters it was Murdoch that was found guilty of wiretapping, paying government employees in Britain for secretive info and many a FOX network reporter was jailed or resigned because of their inherient criminal behavior brought on by Murdoch agendas as well to get the best story no matter who it hurt or career destroyed, that's business he'll you!!

Patriot Act. Everyone was for it back in the day, yada, yada.
I don't have a problem with our ferreting out people who are leaking information that affects our national security.
    Period.
If someone within the government was doing it and we can only track him/her via the reporter or news organization they gave or SOLD the information to then have at it.
Meanwhile....To the eternal chagrin of Reich-wing bobble-heads Holder doesn't look like someone who is "sweating" ANYTHING.
    Good for him.

looks like holder is begging these people to forgive him and promising never to do it again. and I'm sure he's asking them to please burying the story or to not report on it so he can keep his job. i'm sure they will do whatever he asks them to do as they don't want to be targeted like everybody else. welcome to chicago gangster government.

Pete I'd quite forgotten about Fox ownerRupert Murdoch's scandal in Britain regarding wiretapping and leaking and publisihing sensitive government information.
Who got kicked to the curb on that one? I believe his son took the fall.
    Thanks for the reminder!

As he should and bring this to an end.
We have more important things to do, but only if the republicans stop saying NO to everything.

Some of them need to follow Michele Bachmann.

FEELING THE HEAT: Liberal Attorney Joins Calls For Holder to Be 'Fired'

One of the country's most prominent liberal legal scholars called Wednesday for Attorney General Eric Holder to be "fired," joining the growing list of left-leaning pundits slamming his department's pursuit of journalists' phone and email records

Can't have it both way republicans. Scream because there are leaks and it needs to be investigated. Invested and now scream about the investigation. It now seems like republicans wan to investigate the investigation of the investigation again. Its a daisy chain of pure politics. Do you know that everyone except the right wing are laughing at you.

Holder is not acting in good faith. He is simply taking actions to allow Obama to control the media, without any good justification for those actions.

In other words, he is behaving in a corrupt manner.

Holder will hold on to this job for dear life. He is far too incompetent to hold a job in the private sector. He wouldn't last a week. And now that everybody knows just how incompetent he is, who the heck would hire him?

Those who willfully release classified data should face federal prosecution – including military, civilians, politicians, and most certainly reporters. Freedom of speech does not give you the right to place Service-members lives at risk so you can get an "exclusive" or spread some political dirt. It's treason.

Holder is just an example of the Obama Adminstration. You look at Holder you see the Obama Adminstration. Obama started out with the best intentions. Unfortuntantly the Cold Hard Facts raised it's ugly head. And Obama has no clue of what is happening. Getting rid of Holder won't fix the problems. You need a new Adminstration to fix that.

faux noise knew about the investigation three years ago and nobody said anything about it. Most likely because the Justice Department acted within the confines of the law.

"you're an albatross on this administration, and we're loving every minute"

Right. Just like Obama's "failure to produce a valid berf surtifikayt" was an albatross. What DOJ did here was legal. Don't like it? Stop obstructing laws designed to prevent it and repeal the ones that allow it. Until then, this is nothing more than a witch hunt and an excuse for GOPers/Teatrolls to throw a tantrum and shout "Constitution" and "freedom" a bunch while trying to curry favor with the MSM. This "albatross" will have just as much effect as the birther nonsense: riled up base and everyone else rolling their eyes.

Uh huh. Just like Obama's "failure to produce a long-form birth certificate" was an albatross around the administration's neck that you guys were loving every minute of? What DOJ did here was legal. Don't like it? Stop obstructing laws designed to prevent it and repeal the ones that allow it. Until then, this is nothing more than a witch hunt and an excuse for GOPers/Teatrolls to throw a tantrum and shout "Constitution" and "freedom" a bunch while trying to curry favor with the MSM. That may help you keep the House based on it being gerrymandered to all hell, but i's not doing the damage to Obama that you wish-think it is.

so you agree that all news reporters, journalists, etc. should be jailed as spies for doing their job? sounds like the old soviet union to me. of course, they didn't have protection under a constitution like our reporters do. a government that would attack and jail reporters for doing their job is a dangerous government for every freedom loving citizen. when will they come after any of us for doing something the government doesn't like, just like they did with the irs?

wake up america. this is the leftist totalitarian government you voted for. how that workin' out for ya?!

richard in houston, i'm not a right-winger, and i'm not laughing about any of this. i'm not saying there is or isn't a "there" there, but surely there's enough when you look at this, the irs debacle, and benghazi mess to at least be curious about what is going on. just yesterday msn reported that a lawyer for some of the conservative groups has produced documentation showing that higher-ups in the irs outside cincinnati (including the washington branch and the treasury department) were involved in the requests made of conservative groups...and that one letter even bears the signature of lois lerner. now we know that holder signed off on one of these AP warrants when he said he had no knowledge of any of it. again, i'm not saying anything other than, in light of recent revelations, it would be nice to know what is going on. not everyone who finds a lot of this curious and slightly disturbing is a right-wing lunatic racist supremecist. some people simply want some answers. true, the right-wing gloms onto any and every potential "scandal" involving the obama administration, and it looks goofy in the process...but the left-wing that buries its head in the sand and refuses to accept even the idea that there may be corrupt elements in this administration are just as goofy. both parties are corrupt and capable of all kinds of mischief.

When someone starts their post with "i'm not a right-winger" it's a pretty good indicator they are, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt – for now.

As for the rest of you post: every single so-called "scandal" that the rethugs have trotted out over the last few weeks has turned out to be nothing more than lies and innuendo created by the reichwing. The "librul" media is trying to back away quietly from these so-called "scandals" because they're embarrassed that they ran with them without checking sources.

That's a gross mischaracterization of what he said. You just illustrated precisely why the GOP/Teatrolls engage in these stunts AND why they get away with them.
