'Liar' charge a step too far for some Republicans

(CNN) – Rep. Darrell Issa's assertion Sunday that Jay Carney is a "paid liar" wasn't met with a chorus of agreement Monday from fellow Republicans, some of whom said the comment was misplaced amid real worries about government overreach.

Two outspoken senators – John McCain and Lindsey Graham – both disavowed the remark, saying Issa should focus instead on getting to the bottom of the scandals engulfing the Internal Revenue Service.

"You can go too far," Graham said on the Fox News Radio program "Kilmeade and Friends."

"Let's don't make it personal," continued the South Carolina Republican. "Jay Carney is not the issue here. He's the spokesman for the White House. Just keep doing what you're doing, Darrell."

He encouraged Issa, the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, to "just plod through" the investigation into which levels of the IRS instigated the targeting of conservative groups applying for tax exempt status.

In an interview on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday, Issa told Candy Crowley that Carney is a "paid liar" for repeating the IRS line that employees in Cincinnati were responsible for the IRS mess-up. He said interviews with IRS employees suggested otherwise.

"Their paid liar, their spokesperson, pictured behind, he's still making up things about what happens," he said, pointing to a photo of Carney on the set.

McCain, speaking on CBS "This Morning," said he uses the word "liar" sparingly when referring to fellow officials.

"I would never like to use that word," he said. "I think that we should let these investigations take their course, let the facts come out."

Just out of morbid curiosity I watched some of the FOX coverage on this (isn't hard to find- it is wall to wall on that joke of a network). It explains why some of the righties on here think these 'scandals' have any basis to them. Of course the foreign owned network is feeding this to them like it is the only thing happening and it is (real quote from fox) "10 times worse than Watergate!". Get real folks... nothing to see here but a repeat of the hearings from Clinton's second term. Same dog and pony show with different caricatures. Hopefully (please, oh please) it will have the same result. McCain and Graham see this and are trying to head off another catastrophic election loss for the party, but Issa and his ilk are on a mission.
    Proceed (please, oh please)

What do u call someone who does not tell the truth? A liar.
What do you call somebody who steals two cars? A car thief. What do you call somebody who jacks up their insurance policy then burns down a building? An arsonist.

Why would anybody allow Issa to serve in our Congress?

Politicians lie, including Issa. If he thinks he is ever going to be president, Issa is also delusional.

Liar is a suitable description for Carney – and there are many types of lies. Obama "I will reduce the deficit by 1/2 by the end of my first term" – another lie! It seems that Democrats are the moral sludge recently, and it always takes a Republican to call them out!
When you call someone a liar, it helps to identify the exact words in question and to identify the truth. In the case of Carney, Holder, and all of the other "liars" in the Obama administration, this has not been done.

The annual deficit has been cut by 40% during Pres. Obama's first term.

Senator Graham is a fairly intelligent and reasonable guy. Get off his back. We need more like him.

Obama is a liar and a radical socialist leftist and deserves to be impeached and over thrown for his crimes against the United States. Issa is blasted for calling it as it is... Carney is a paid liar and propagandist of the magnitude of Goerbels. Obama needs to be ousted.

@Ray E – "Also Social Security and Medicare are running out of money"
Guess you didn't hear on Faux News that, just like President Obama said, Obamacare has extended the life of Medicare by 10 years. Try to keep up! As far as SS, President Obama has put options on the table but the Repubs will not in any way, shape or form work with the man. They are a total waste of our tax dollars!!

Jay Carney reminds me of Bagdad Bob who reported for the other Hussein that Sadham was under full control as American tanks rolled by behind him. He claimed that Iraq was under the control of their guard. What a bunch of horse squeeze that was also. Yes Jay Carney is a paid liar.

I watched Candy Crowley and I do not understand why CNN does not challenge the lies of Issa or McCain. There seems to be a lack of integrity at CNN. You give air time to these people and let them mislead the public as if it is news. Is it not true the IRS is to investigate whether organizations wanting a tax free number should properly qualify under the law ?? When they do that they are doing their job. Come Candy read up on the rules and report properly.

US selling 56 post office buildings and land, worth several billion. 6% commission to be paid to sole real estate broker. That would be Richard Blum. Who is he? Well ... gee golly ... he's the husband of US Senator Dianne Feinstein. Don't you just love tyranny's new definition of "transparency"?

See the new book "Fun and Games With Tyranny" by Barry Soetoro.

Massages facts and fiction, fib teller, little white liar. Face it. It is, what it is. The WH Spokesperson knows when they take that job that they will be required to bend rules, wordsmith, twist facts, etc. It's been going on 50 years or more, so nothing new hear, except it's getting to be a daily routine with this WH and I think the media, who've been played like a violin for 5 years are finally seeing the pattern. I miss the days when the WH press would be all over it like sharks, but there's just to much internal love for this administration.

Miracle of miracles the economy, environment, infrastructure, education, equality, poverty have all been taken care of leaving all this extra time for Republicans to pursue their political vendetta. It just keeps getting clearer that if we want Congress to get things done the Republicans have to go.

They do? Really? Please, cite an instance when an Democrat in the Congress called on his colleagues a liar. The GOP has had members of Congress call people all sorts of crazy stuff. I cite the example of Alan West.
