(CNN) – Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, GOP Rep. Mike Rogers, said Sunday the Guardian columnist Glenn Greenwald "doesn't have a clue how this thing works," referring to the U.S. government's surveillance techniques approved by his committee.
"I know your reporter that you interviewed, Greenwald, says that he's got it all and now is an expert on the program. He doesn't have a clue how this thing works," Rogers said on ABC's "This Week." "Neither did the person who released just enough information to literally be dangerous."
(CNN) – A plan to overhaul the nation’s immigration system crafted by a bipartisan group of senators gained the backing of Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte Sunday, giving the bill a boost ahead of Senate debate this week.
The legislation, which emerged from the Senate “Gang of Eight,” would create a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. The bill is far from certain to gain Senate approval, however, and Republicans in the House have already said the pathway to citizenship provision is a non-starter.
(CNN) – Lawmakers who are now expressing outrage over the government’s surveillance of phone records and Internet activity should have paid closer attention when they were voting to reauthorize provisions in the Patriot Act, Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, said Sunday.
Reacting particularly to fellow Republican Sen. Rand Paul’s assertion this week the programs amount to an “assault on the Constitution,” McCain told CNN chief political correspondent Candy Crowley that members of Congress had not been left in the dark on what powers to government has in monitoring Americans.
Washington (CNN) – Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, said Sunday he's looking into suing the federal government in the wake of what has been a tumultuous week for the Obama administration and National Security Agency.
"I'm going to be seeing if I can challenge this at the Supreme Court level. I'm going to be asking the Internet providers and all of the phone companies; ask your customers to join me in a class-action lawsuit," Paul said on FOX News Sunday.
(CNN) – A “conservative Republican” manager of Cincinnati-based IRS screeners told congressional investigators there was no evidence the White House was involved in the agency’s targeting of conservative groups, according to the Democratic leader of a committee probing the scandal.
This refutes claims by some Republicans that the groups were targeted at the direction of political operatives working to get President Barack Obama re-elected, said Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Maryland, on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday.
(CNN) – Sen. Mark Udall, who's long called for greater transparency in how the government collects data on Americans, said Sunday the law allowing that monitoring should be reopened for debate after new disclosures about the scope of the intelligence community's snooping.
"It concerns me particularly because Americans didn't know this. That's why I'm calling for a reopening of the Patriot Act, I'm calling for a wholesome debate across the country," Udall, a Colorado Democrat, said on CNN's "State of the Union."
