Pelosi to reporter asking on abortion: 'I'm not going there'

Washington (CNN) – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi got into a heated back and forth Thursday with a reporter inquiring about a measure that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, alleging the comparison the journalist made to a criminal abortion doctor in Philadelphia was made for political purposes.

The clash came the day after Rep. Trent Franks – the creator of the 20 week abortion proposal - caused outrage when he said the "incidents of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low." He later clarified his remarks.

Speaking Thursday at her weekly press conference, Pelosi said the House Judiciary Committee's passage of Frank's measure was an example of Republicans' focus on issues other than what Americans care about – jobs.

"Just another day in the life of the Republican Congress," Pelosi quipped.

"They passed legislation that was disrespectful of the rights, health and safety of the American women. All of the people who voted for the bill were men," she continued.

She pointed to a few other agenda items before beginning the question and answer section, calling on reporter John McCormack from the conservative magazine Weekly Standard.

McCormack asked about the GOP bill, saying some argue there's no difference between what the measure is intending to prevent and the crimes committed by Dr. Kermit Gosnell, a Philadelphia abortion provider who was convicted in May on three consecutive counts of first-degree murder for killing babies by cutting their spinal cords with scissors.

Asking Pelosi what the "moral difference" was between abortions after 20 weeks and Gosnell's crimes, Pelosi bristled and said to the reporter she could tell he was "enjoying the question" and "savoring it."

"This is not the issue," the California Democrat said, calling Gosnell's crimes "reprehensible" while claiming the GOP-sponsored measure would "make it a federal law that there be no abortion in the country."

"I'm not going to have this conversation with you because you obviously have an agenda," she told McCormack. "You're not interested in having an answer. But I've responded to you to the extent that I'm going to respond to you because I'm going to tell you something: as a mother of five children - my oldest child was six years old the day I brought my fifth child home from the hospital – as a practicing and respectful Catholic, this is sacred ground to me when we talk about this. I don't think it should have anything to do with politics and that's where you're taking it and I'm not going there."

Later another reporter tried to ask a question related to the abortion bill and Pelosi said she wasn't talking about the issue anymore.

Quit the religion idiocy–if a girl wants it let her abort...let women have their say and choice.

Pelosi has stated in the past she's for late term abortions along with partial birth abortions.

    She's disgusting.

Really? You mean he actually came out and said "I think I should be able to decide what women do with their wombs"? Oh wait...you meant "clarified" as in "winked at the GOP/Teatroll base to let them know he still really believes it, but then went on to pretend to walk it back and explain it away."

Conservatives and their gotcha questions. First of all, Gosnell was not licensed to practice. Secondly, the objective of this legislation is to undermine Roe v. Wade. The war on women and their wombs continue.

so one of the leaders of the democrat party, the party of baby murderers, refuses to answer public policy questions and explain her position. how convenient. she simply wants to dodge justifying the use of abortion as a common means of birth control. yes, just stick your head in the sand ms. pretend leader. make believe you don't support the murder of millions of innocent babies when birth control is cheap or free and available everywhere you look in this country. and now they have the plan b pill that a 10 year old can go buy! what is the justification for millions of abortions a year? there is none.

  7. Liberal Sense (Or lack thereof)

Most liberals don't even think there's a difference between PBA's or late term abortions from a regular abortion.

They think an abortion is an abortion.

fundraising, no leadership President, or she gone, like the Senste Majority of Democrats, in 2014.

Kudos nancy, your absolutely correct, yet another attempt at a gothcha moment. the gop should be worried about whats coming out of their mouths, or should i say koch brothers mouths. and for the article about bush legacy, again, another attempt to brainwash people into thinking bush was not that bad, tell that to the families of the nearly 5000 dead soldiers, they know that after him, they will be lucky to win the wh in the next twenty or so years

Let me get this right: " I don't think it should have anything to do with politics and that's where you're taking it and I'm not going there."

THAT, from the former Speaker of the House???

Wow. What an argument to have competency tests for members of Congress....

gotcha questions??? if she supports or doesn't support something is a gotcha question for the leader of the democrats??? the truth is it is not a gotcha question, it is a question she cannot answer without making a fool of herself and showing the lunacy of her position.

btw, gosnell was indeed licensed to practice. how do you think he was in business for over 30 years. enough with the lies please.

the purpose of the legislation is to protect the most innocent among us, children. abortion is a regulatable procedure and that's what this is. if you want an abortion, you have 20 weeks to decide. after that your baby's life takes precidence over your need for convenience.

maybe some lefty can answer this very simple question?

why do you all support every single gun control law you can think of and yet not support any restrictions on the murder of innocent babies, aka abortion???

so you claim you want to save lives with gun control, yet support the taking of many many lives with abortion.

do you not see the complete contradiction in your beliefs?

have you ever seen a baby? held a baby? do you think that thin skin covering of a woman's abdomen changes the fact that it is a human being???

It would appear that the entire right wing does not believe in freedom of religion, and wish to live in a theocracy, not the democratically elected republican to which they claim. Why?

The right wing fails to recognize the simple fact that freedom OF religion also means freedom FROM religion. Which also means that when the right wing tries to hoist their high moral values upon everyone in this country, they are no longer living in a democracy, but theocracy of their own design.

  20. it must be said

The truth is that Nancy Pelosi has no problem with what Dr. Gosnell did. She just can't come out and say that. The women went there to get their babies killed which is what Pelosi supports. The doctor did exactly what they asked for and what Nancy Pelosi supports. Why isn't she honest enough to step right up to the microphone and declare that? Because she is just another lying, dishonest Democrat using women to further their political agenda.
