White House (CNN) - President Barack Obama's family will start their summer vacation with a trip to Europe, joining him as he travels to the United Kingdom and Germany next week, the White House announced on Friday.
First lady Michelle Obama and first daughters Malia and Sasha will start their three-day tour by attending the president's speech to local students in Belfast, in Northern Ireland.
They will then travel to Dublin, in the Republic of Ireland, while the president attends the G8 summit in the secluded Lough Erne, in the southern part of Northern Ireland. While in Dublin, Mrs. Obama and her daughters will tour Trinity College where they will look at the documentation of the president's Irish ancestry. The first lady accompanied her husband in 2011 for his visit to his ancestral hometown of Moneygall.
The Obama family will also be together in Berlin later in the trip where Obama will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and will give a speech at the Brandenburg Gate. He spoke near there in 2008 as he was running for president, and next week's speech will be near the 50th anniversary of a speech by President John F. Kennedy at the height of the Cold War when Berlin was under siege.
Mrs. Obama and the girls will do some educational sight-seeing with visits to the Holocaust Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin, as well to the Reichstag, the German Parliament building.
But it won't be a completely educational trip. While in Dublin, the daughters will join their mother and the wives of the Taoiseach and president of Ireland for an Irish youth performance of Riverdance at the historic Gaiety Theater.
So he's going for official business anyway and they're just tagging along, but here comes the "OMG HOW MUCH IS THIS COSTING US SO THAT MICHELLE AND HIS BRATS CAN GO ON VACATION!?!?!?!"
And yes, we know, he's done absolutely nothing but make teleprompter speeches, go on golfing vacations, and derp about like a lazy on of "them" etc., but somehow also managed to do soooooo very much that he's completely reorganized the entirety of the US gov't into a socialist dictatorship. YAWN. Yawn yawn yawn yawn yawn.
I'm sure the right wing is going to complain about the cost of the trip to Africa, which is estimated to cost $200 million. Just remember that the cost of that "no-fly" zone the right wants so badly will cost $50 million per day.
Maybe it's just me, but what about sleeping in, sandy beaches, Mai-Tais...oh wait, it IS just me!
Enjoy your time together away from the dometic haters.
See how beautifully the rest of the world embraces your father Sasha and Malia, where his intelligence, vision, and hard-work are truly appreciated.
Her come "the usual suspects" and their "Who's paying for this trip" tired crap.
Check that. Estimated cost is $100 million, not 200.
Ermigerd!! This will obviously cost a hunert gabillion dollars and turn everyone in the country gay and communist! – signed, the moronic right wing response.
Another rich vacation by a one percenter that we have to pay for. But I'm sure the liberals here will have zero problem with this.
More of a working vacation than an actual vacation.
Wonderful, have a good time, stay there a long time.
Que the haters in 5-4-3-2-1...
All the haters will come out of the woodwork, complaining all the President and his family do is travel on the taxpayer's dime ...
The Bush twins visited Europe during their father’s presidency, as did children of the Carters, Fords, Nixons, and Eisenhowers.
FDR had sons in Europe during his presidency, of course in the war, but even before as tourists and businessmen.
Theodore Roosevelt sent his daughter, Alice, on a foreign cruise to China and the Philippines.
President Ulysses S. Grant sent his daughter on a European cruise to get her out of town.
GW Bush traveled many times to South America and Europe as a child and his daughter, Jenna Bush, shopped the Champs Elysee.
"We have a functional family in the White House, a marriage that works, and children who are not abused or neglected."
BTW, my source for all of this? NewsMax – not exactly a Liberal rag.
. . . and will 20 relatives and the dog also tag along at our expense?
Post a comment
That about cover it?
In reply to another story, @How Many asked "How many embasy employees were killed when Bush was president?"
13, as a result of 54 attacks on diplomatic facilities while GW was president.
It's this lack of intelligence and knee-jerk hateful reaction to everything President Obama and/or his administration does that's holding our country back.
The irony of the people on here with comments like "here come the haters to complain again about how much this is costing us" is that they don't see that they are tired of these comments because they happen every time he takes a vacation.
Well, you are tired of those comments so often because people are able to complain so often because he or his family is taking vacation so often.
Is it the chicken or the egg?
@Sniffit: "And yes, we know, he's done absolutely nothing but make teleprompter speeches, go on golfing vacations, and derp about like a lazy on of "them" etc., ..."
Easier for the tea trolls to believe than the fact they're being played for fools ...
Oh, and the TEA Party wasn't around when the Patriot Act first was enacted. That came around many years later.
@tom l.: "Another rich vacation by a one percenter that we have to pay for."
Were you this upset when GW was on vacation more (1,020 days) than any U.S. President since Herbert Hoover and possibly more than any other President in history? This includes the at least $20 million taxpayer dollars just on flights to his ranch in Crawford.
"Oh, and the TEA Party wasn't around when the Patriot Act first was enacted. That came around many years later."
Yawn. Accusing current Teatrolls of having not complained about massive phone dragnet surveillance programs under Bush does not equate with claiming that the Tea Party existed back then. You may now return to your regularly scheduled straw man fabrication.
To be honest, not really. His vacations were here in the U.S. and, just like Obama, they are always working. The vacations the Obamas take are much more expensive and flamboyant.
But I can be honest and say that I don't think that any president is truly on vacation. They are always working.
What makes you such a hypocrit is complaining about Bush's $20 million dollar vacation when that is fractional compared to any vacation the Obamas take.
"Well, you are tired of those comments so often because people are able to complain so often because he or his family is taking vacation so often."
1. His family doesn't work for you, so you can go bugger a lamp if you want to complain about how often they vacation.
2. Clearly, you failed to read the article, because he (the one who does work for you), is working on this trip.
3. If you think the art of diplomacy and meeting with foreign leaders and making speeches to foreign crowds is not part of the POTUS's job....well, you don't think that...you just don't like him because he wasn't from your "team" so you're making sh-t up to complain about.
@think again, thank you but the right wing crazies only care about what this Presideng is doing. Nothing that the shrub did was wrong.
Thousands killed because of a lie of a war, no problem. Patriot act? Was okay the but now, heck no.
1/3 of presidency on vacation vs our President who doesn't spend very weekend at Camp David or in an ugly ranch in TX?
@tom I: "Well, you are tired of those comments so often because people are able to complain so often because he or his family is taking vacation so often."
The problem is the tea trolls and others of their ilk have the intelligence and attention span of a gnat, willing to believe all the lies spewed at them by Fox and the right-wing media machine.
If you folks weren't so intellectually lazy, you'd take the time to do a quick google search and learn how hard President Obama has been working (just ask all the folks whose retirements portfolios have recovered, along with the American auto industry that is still here, all the folks who've found employment, all the military families reunited with loved ones who will FINALLY stop being deployed,. etc., etc., etc.).
You might also learn that, compared to GW Bush, President Obama has taken far fewer vacations (not to mention Malia and Sasha haven't been arrested for trying to buy booze underage or any of the other myriad headaches those girls cause the Secret Service).
The only straw man is you. You are the one that accused the TEA Party, in several posts, of having zero credibility because they didn't complain about the Patriot Act when Bush was president. So now they complain about our privacy being violated with the obvious over-use of the Patriot Act and you choose to call them hypocrits because they would have been for it had they been around when Bush was president. But they weren't around so how do you know?
Not to mention that you won't call Obama a hypocrit who was against the Patriot Act when he was a senator before he was for it as president.
That's ok. Obama reeeeeeaaaallly cares about the average American so it's ok, right?
It doesn't matter what the first family may do. There will always be haters, at least for the next 3 1/2 years.
So-called "Obama haters" are the mirror-image of "Bush haters".
Nothing new or unprecedented, just the worst of US "D Vs R" politics.
