Senate negotiators seek new compromise on immigration

Washington (CNN) - A bipartisan group of senators is scrambling to reach a fresh compromise they hope can propel a proposal to overhaul U.S. immigration policy toward passage in that chamber and provide momentum heading into the Republican-controlled House.

A deal remained elusive, however, on Tuesday evening and it was uncertain whether the stark differences that have stalled immigration reform for years in Congress could be bridged with time running out on debate.

6 out of 10 americans want border security done first. read cnn's poll. citizenship isn't even close to it in the numbers. first shut off the flow and keep the next 20 million out, then deal with the immigration mess inside the country. track down and deport all visa overstayers. the rest have 6 months to come forward and register. after that they are criminals to be deported if they are caught.

or.... we could always just adopt the same policies as the mexican government. very very harsh stuff there. we are being played for fools by them. they encourage their citizens to invade our country and send money back to mexico.

At some point in the future, when the Republican Party folds it's tent for the last time, this event will be remembered as a point where the GOP turned its back once and for ever on being able to appeal to anyone but old white males. they've lost women, they've lost youth, and they are working hard to keep minorities at bay.

Just Sayin's comments above outline very clearly the imaginary position the radicals in the GOP have staked out: Fear; the idea that the border is not secure, that there is no attempt to stop border crossers, and that it is even remotely possible to "track down and deport all visa overstayers. the rest have 6 months to come forward and register. after that they are criminals to be deported if they are caught"- clearly a small, non-authoritarian government solution.

The GOP is slowly dying, and the physician refuses to tell the patient.

high hurdle my eye. more like the great wall of China. Between Tan Man and the new Joe McCarthy Ted Cruz, they will sabotage this bill with everything they've got. As for "closing the border/border security".....what does that mean specifically? You know that you will never accept what others consider "Secure" so you can keep this from happening. It's a joke what these guys want. They know they'll never agree on it so they can keep from passing the bill

Felipe Cruz has already announced he's going to submit an amendment to the bill which will ultimately destroy the bill. Boehner has no leadership over his caucus.

Sorry to ask this question BUT I have to: What kind of Speaker this man is (Boehner)? It was his Party that decided to engage in order to win the hearts & minds of those who didn't vote for them mainly Latinos, still he is not aware how to go about it??? Why, and why this man was appointed as Speaker for the first time and the second as well? Am not republican, BUT does it make any sense to have such a person in order to put everything up right??? I do not think so.

There is no "reform" of our immigration policies needed.

What is needed, is enforcement of our EXISTING laws. Those have not only NOT been enforced, they have been deliberately circumvented by this administration, to ALLOW and ENCOURAGE even MORE illegal entry into this country.

    Good Questions-
I suspect listening to Rince Priebus last night reaffirm that it isn't that Republicans' polices are simply repulsive- oh, no. They just can't get their words out effectively- they really love women and minorities, and working class Americans (despite what their laws say). This is their suicide pact in action.

Lets call this bill the blue collar grave bill.because thats who its going to hurt most. And if you are part of the working poor you are screwed. The bill says that a compeny does not have to offer the new american healthcare for 12yr. That mean the working class americans will be fired.and guess who are gonna fill them jobs? Big business wins again.

BTW- If the public REALLY want a more secure boarder, and Republicans actually think that can be achieved, where is their legislation and funding for that? They are simply too busy playing "overturn the ACA" and "overturn Roe V. Wade". Not one jobs bill, not one security bill. Not ONE!
Republicans- too busy dancing for their radical supporters to actually WORK for America.

The most useless Speaker of the House in U.S. history. He should be removed from office immediately. He is nothing but an obstructionist. The representatives of the people are not even going to be allowed to debate or vote on such matters because of this whiney pinhead? I'm ashamed of the Congress as I am sure are most Americans.

Well, Rick, that little creed flies in the face of reality. Crossings and arrests are down; we have the most boots on the ground at the border; the greatest number of deportations.

Please cite which laws you have evidence of that are not being enforced. We'd love to see your evidence.

Frankly the odds are against an immigration bill occurring for two reasons 1) There are Republicans afraid that if it is passed 70% of the illegals will go Democratic 2)There are still businesses who LOVE the psychological advantage they have over the illegals that they can underpay. So as usual a big issue in American politics is being devoured by fear and money. NOTHING NEW here!! The smoke screen about border security is an age old distraction. The border is too long to secure completely without spending a TON of money. They all know this so lets move on...how about the BUDGET, creating NEW JOBS by REBUILDING AMERICA, what about the HIGH INTEREST on STUDENT LOANS while the BIG banks and get rock bottom rates, what about the RIDICULOUSLY high costs of healthcare in which hospitals 200 miles apart can have a 60% difference in what the charge for the same procedure but there is no way the consumer can find out until after the work is done!!, these are much more important issues to the LONG TERM health of America

The GOP/Teatrolls have painted themselves into a corner and what we're now seeing is them engage in a grand act of corner painting:

On the one hand, the GOP/Teatrolls appear to be absolutely convinced that they can hoodwink the Hispanic and minority community into thinking that, if the GOP/Teatroll majority passes something called "immigration reform" without a majority of the Dems' votes, they can claim all the credit and it will magically win them all sorts of Hispanic and minority voters and stave off their demographic Armageddon.

On the other hand, in order to manufacture such a scenario, one in which the majority of GOP/Teatrolls vote for the House bill and Dems turn up their nose at it, they will have to essentially gut any immigration reform package in several ways that completely obliterate any meaningful reform and make it so that the legislation has absolutely nothing to do with meeting the Hispanic and minority communities' expectations of immigration reform. In particular, they'll either take out any pathway to citizenship OR try to enact "border security" preconditions on any triggers for a pathway to citizenship that are almost impossible to meet, are so ill-defined as to have no meaning (allowing all sorts of manipulation) and give southern border states (whose proclivities regarding race are well known) all sorts of discretion that lets them thwart the triggers.
