Washington (CNN) - Longtime media reporter Howard Kurtz and CNN parted company as Kurtz and CNN confirmed the end of his 15-year run hosting CNN's Reliable Sources program. Kurtz will become a contributor to Fox News.
Kurtz has worked for many years as a media reporter and media critic. He spent 29 years at The Washington Post, the majority of those years working as the Post's media reporter. After leaving the Post in 2010, Kurtz became the Washington Bureau Chief for Newsweek and The Daily Beast, managing the Washington staff and writing on politics and media.
His tenure at the Daily Beast ended earlier this year after Kurtz mistakenly accused Jason Collins, an NBA player who publicly announced he is gay, of failing to disclose that he had once been engaged to a woman. Collins had, in fact, noted his engagement in a story he wrote for Sports Illustrated. Kurtz stated at the time that his departure from the Daily Beast was already in the works.
Kurtz has covered every major American media story over the last 25 years, from the OJ Simpson saga to the Impeachment of President Clinton to the rise of the Internet. His first book, Media Circus: The Trouble with America's Newspapers, foretold the decline of the American newspaper business. His third book, Spin Cycle: Inside the Clinton Propaganda Machine told the tale of how Bill Clinton emerged largely unscathed from the most significant presidential scandal since Watergate.
A CNN spokeswoman said that the Reliable Sources program will continue and a search is underway for a new host.
CNN has already started negative comments about him and his seat isn't even cold yet! Fox may be biased to the right but at least they report stories that CNN will not report or if they do, they gloss over the bad news and find something to divert the attention away from Obama and his administration. Wow... what a run on sentence!
It does make laugh to see all these comments about Fox. Like there is no bias at CNN. Too many people are so used to the left bias everywhere everywhere in the media they begin to assume it must all be true and that somehow Fox to them isn't real. Well, Fox is as real as CNN but with a different perspective. Anyone who only watches one or the other merely tunes to see / confirm what they already believe. If you really want to be informed you need to see all perspectives and then decide. Honestly, you cannot limit yourself to these two sources to be fully informed. But taking them both in is far better than relying on one.
For everybody saying this is a step down, apparently yo must know the contract details. If you were but half honest you would know there are liberal voices on Fox.
No big loss. He will love being at a network that censors what is said
I wonder what made him decide to get out of the news business?
Sounds like he's going to be a perfect fit of Faux News.
Now that he is moving to the anti-Obama network, we'll see if he brings political neutrality and a sense of responsible reporting and journalism to that network, or whether he becomes another Glen Beck!
He went to the number one rated news network. i'd say it's a move up
And he thinks he will find one on FOX???? Almost pissed myself, you are hysterical!!!!
Ever notice how they leave CNN and go directly to Fox? Kurtz, Dobbs, Roberts, etc. I wonder if the contract requires that they change their political affiliations for the job too. I don't know about you, but I don't think CNN is any worse than Fox when it comes to reporting the news. There is no neutrality. Well, let me say this....there are no Walter Cronkites, or Edward R. Morrows or David Brinkleys out there. None of them can deliver a news report without it being heavily biased. Because heaven forbid they simply provide us with the details and let us make up our own minds about events. We're too stupid to figure out what it all means and need them to tell us what we think. Good bye Howie. I never liked you anyway. In fact, there isn't anyone on CNN that I DO like anymore, other than John King. And you never even see him anymore.
He will do well at Faux-pas news where reliablity and facts dont matter.
And he thinks he will find it at FOX??? Almost wet my pants. You are too funny!!!
If you don't tow the CNN liberal Line or agree with the immoral outlook at CNN you are out. You will be alright Howard at Fox News but watch your back there too.
I enjoyed your show and watched it every weekend. Will miss hearing your opinions as I don't watch FOX.
Sorry to see you go to the other side!! I don't watch FOX!!!!
I actually liked watching Reliable Sources – watched it every week.
But I won't be seeing his new show. If it was going to be on another
channel, I probably would see it – but just can't get myself to turn on Fox!
Sorry to see him go... the notion that apparently one mistake cost him his job is pretty said. If we applied that same scrutiny to very news outlet – and just about every company, business, employee, government official, and politician we would have 100% unemployment in the country.
On the other hand that a guy who has spent a good deal of time criticizing FOX (and rightfully so) is now going to work for them is pretty unseemly.
Sorry folks, FOX is not real news and no this is not just an issue of rightwing bias versus left wing bias. FOX does not even pretend to be about reporting the news. It exists for 2 reasons. To make money by exploiting hate; and to promote ignorance. The fact that they occasionally report news or even get the news right does not make up for the vast majority of effort they put into getting it wrong.
