'Women for Anthony' hope to boost Weiner mayoral bid

(CNN) – Anthony Weiner's New York City mayoral bid is getting a helping hand from a group of New York City women – led by the candidate's wife Huma Abedin – who are raising campaign cash for the former U.S. congressman.

The "Women for Anthony" committee will hold a cocktail reception with Weiner June 27, according to an invitation obtained by CNN. Hosted by Abedin, the event also lists a number of other women supporting Weiner's bid for mayor, including fashion designer Reem Acra, Abedin's sister Heba, and Cheryl Saban, wife of Haim Saban, a longtime Clinton donor.

Huma Abedin was a longtime aide to Hillary Clinton during her years as a senator, presidential candidate and secretary of state.

Weiner is attempting a political comeback after leaving Congress in disgrace in 2011 amid a lewd sexting scandal involving women on Twitter. His opponents in the Democratic primary include Christine Quinn, New York's city council speaker.

The "Women for Anthony" event is slated to take place at the Upper East Side home of Jill Iscol, a political and educational activist.

Other women on the host list include Rory Tahari, the ex-wife of fashion designer Elie Tahari; and Clinton backers Elaine Schuster and Binta Brown.

The invitation asks supporters to join "our next mayor Anthony Weiner." The event was first reported by Politico.

CNN Political Reporter Peter Hamby contributed to this report.

Besides hiding out of sight, out of mind, what exactly has Anthony Weiner done to rehab his image? Nothing.

Women for Anthony is definitely an 'organization' that the IRS needs to strip of their tax exempt status.

New York and Chicago are cities, not states. Don't throw stones from your glass house, Mark Sanford.

I'm just wondering did he do anything criminal? I don't know a lot about him but I heard he did a good job prior to the weiner wagging. Doesn't he deserve a second chance or is that privilege strictly for members of the GOP??

add in that country......africa and you get the GOP IQ of 75. This person has no clue as to why what Sanford did was MUCH worse than Weiner. Of course since Anthony will not get the nomination anyway this is a pointless discussion

You can just see all the jokes coming on this one. Wait for all the comedy shows tonight – this should be good.

@ Fair – got to give credit where credit is due. "Women for Weiner" would be hilarious.

While I think Mark Sanford should be banned from holding elected office for life for going AWOL, at least he waited three or four years and performed public service work during the interim.

What's Weiner done? As far as I can tell all that he's done is hide out underneath a rock somewhere for little less than a year. How do we know that he's changed his ways? We don't. He wants the public to trust him.

Even I will back you on this one. What was done was not smart but not criminal. If SC took Sanford back, NYC can take back Weiner, IF that is what NYC wants. I don't get a vote on Weiner just like I did not get a vote on Sanford!
