(CNN) – Anthony Weiner's New York City mayoral bid is getting a helping hand from a group of New York City women – led by the candidate's wife Huma Abedin – who are raising campaign cash for the former U.S. congressman.
The "Women for Anthony" committee will hold a cocktail reception with Weiner June 27, according to an invitation obtained by CNN. Hosted by Abedin, the event also lists a number of other women supporting Weiner's bid for mayor, including fashion designer Reem Acra, Abedin's sister Heba, and Cheryl Saban, wife of Haim Saban, a longtime Clinton donor.
Huma Abedin was a longtime aide to Hillary Clinton during her years as a senator, presidential candidate and secretary of state.
Weiner is attempting a political comeback after leaving Congress in disgrace in 2011 amid a lewd sexting scandal involving women on Twitter. His opponents in the Democratic primary include Christine Quinn, New York's city council speaker.
The "Women for Anthony" event is slated to take place at the Upper East Side home of Jill Iscol, a political and educational activist.
Other women on the host list include Rory Tahari, the ex-wife of fashion designer Elie Tahari; and Clinton backers Elaine Schuster and Binta Brown.
The invitation asks supporters to join "our next mayor Anthony Weiner." The event was first reported by Politico.
