IRS also targeted progressive groups

Washington (CNN) – The Internal Revenue Service targeted liberal groups as well as conservatives seeking tax-exempt status, a Democratic congressman charged on Monday after the agency acknowledged the inappropriate practice continued until last month.

Rep. Sander Levin said the term "progressives" was included on IRS screening lists of applicants for tax-exempt status made available to Congress on Monday.

It's kind of funny how CNN takes a very long time to report anything that might look bad to the Obama administration but anything that will help out gets reported really fast and gets a front page spot as well.

If they were screening both groups equally, then whats the problem? The law states if your a politcal organization, you don't get a tax exempt status. I say remove the exemption across the board.

One can certainly see this as evidence that conservatives need to get off their victimization high-horses, but it's also worth noting that it appears the IRS was targeting any groups that engage in political activism. IMHO, that's just as troubling. One could easily construe it to mean that at least some people inside the agency would rather these groups–all of them–just sit down and shut up. What this country needs is more political involvement, not less, and it certainly isn't the IRS's mandate to decide what level is OK.

If you want to draw a conclusion out of all this, try this one: this is yet another example of a government that steamrolls over the citizenry, regardless of political persuasion. Everyone's ox is getting gored.

Those unnamed liberal congressional sources sure where quick to come out with this non-specific tidbit of information...How about some facts, CNN?

Go figure that a liberal news media source would cover for a liberal government administration, based on the say so of liberal congressmen.... Love the hard evidence.

Let's see if the Tea Party and GOP folk on this board are as outraged about progressives being targeted as they were about the GOP being targeted.

As Al Sharpton overplayed his hand in the Martin-Zimmerman case, so to has Issa overextended his reach in this.

(To anyone who understands anything about the IRS' practices, this isn't new. It's just being reported now.)

... multiple congressional sources tell CNN .... multiple sources .... (that sure sounds trustworthy) .. and the angry liberal voices come out in droves on the CNN message board. Wonder why so many liberals have so much time on their hands ... and always come across so angry (with the customary name-calling) ... oh, that's right, most are unemployed and collecting.

If there were progressive groups that got the same scrutiny, I'm sure members of at least one of them would have jumped at the chance to immediately point out that conservatives weren't being unfairly singled out.

Good to see you on this one (too late for me, I'm posting too late for today). This bit of Schadenfreude is like ice cream.

Also, thanks for the insight on the affirmative action ruling earlier today in that thread.

Rick McDaniel, the one thing this "probe" is proving is Obama is clean, but of course, being a right winger you will never be able to admit that.

This is all turning into a big yawn - the "outrage" of the aggrieved tea party-ers was overplayed for the media and the Congress, and fed into the paranoia of the far right; now the left can join them in a show of distress. Frankly, I can live without either side.

Article gives no mention of what happened to the targeted groups. I suspect while the conservative groups were delayed (a delay is worse than a denial, cause you can immediately appeal a denial), I would not be surprised if the liberal groups were fast tracked.
