IRS also targeted progressive groups

Washington (CNN) – The Internal Revenue Service targeted liberal groups as well as conservatives seeking tax-exempt status, a Democratic congressman charged on Monday after the agency acknowledged the inappropriate practice continued until last month.

Rep. Sander Levin said the term "progressives" was included on IRS screening lists of applicants for tax-exempt status made available to Congress on Monday.

Issa must be terribly disappointed and I am glad that IRS targeted ANY political group for scrutiny that has applied for preferential tax exempt status. GOP, why do you waste tax payer's time on all these hearing for doing their jobs.

Apples and oranges: The "tea party" BOLO was for 501c.4 applications, where a certain amount of political activities are allowed (generally up to 50%, in terms of both time and money.) The "progressive" BOLO in line 16 specifically calls out organizations applying for 501c.3 status, which requires the organization have no political activities.

The article says it looked for groups with "Progressive" in the name, yet "Bus for Progress" was approved with no issues. And while "Progress" is different than "Progressive", the word "Progressive" is in the groups mission statement. If they were looking for the word "Progressive", they would have caught that. Also, "Z Street" was targeted. What word triggered that, Z or Street?

The point is that the IRS doesn't want to admit that these groups were not targeted because of their name, but because of their ideology. The name was just a convenient way to search out conservative groups.

Finally, if "Progress" was one of the supposed search term, name one group with "Progressive" in the name that was targeted. So far, we are at nearly 500 conservative groups and zero "progressive" ones.

All you have to do is read these posts to see how truly Hateful and Ignorant the loony left is. It's the IRS not Issa who said the IRS targeted Tea Party and conservative groups. Get a grip on reality and go out and get a job while you're at it.

Wonder if those progressive groups that actually got targeted as a result of the BOLOs were groups that are critical of the Obama Administration. Not all progressive groups are Obama cheerleaders... there are a lot of respectable ones out there that are true to their political ideology even when a democrat sits in the White House.

Ahh, I doubt that, this smells of hindsight damage control for the administration by the media (hmm . . . we can't really deny that the IRS targeting took place anymore, let's spread it out to make it look like it wasn't just conservative groups and accuse the accuser).

CNN–this is not a news story. It is the sloppy work of a 'want to be' but definitely not a respected journalist or editor who respect their work. Where is your substantiation? Where are your facts? Nothing but hearsay and iffy hearsay at best. It would be nice if you cited at least one source, one small piece of proof, well anything that the professors of journalism required for the story to be considered a news article. Which makes me wonder if anyone at CNN remembers Journalism 101? I do and this piece earns the grade of F. What a shame but typical of today's journalists. Your only saving grace....the masses don't recognize it as sloppy journalism.

If progressive groups were being scrutinized, I'm quite sure at least one would have jumped at the chance to come forward and point out that conservatives weren't being unfairly targeted. I haven't heard of a single liberal group claiming that same type of scrutiny. One would have been all it would have taken to avoid this investigation altogether.

It, looks like repuglicans overreacted again! I just wants to see repuglicans overreact in congress and start passing jobs bills instead, of spending taxpayer money trying to dismantle the healthcare law, Social Security, unemployment insurance, or undermining the President of the United States at every turn. Here we go, Benghazi (overreacted, not a 9/11 comparison), Eric Holder (overreact on all his decisions), Susan Rice (overreact ridiculously), and now the so called IRS scandal blown up (suppose to be the next Watergate)! CNN, where is the reporting on these distortions, misleading, incendiary and incredulous statements from neocon extreme rightwinger repulicans!

It only took like 2 months for them to dig this out from under the pile of conservative groups that were targeted.

"The IRS targeted liberal groups as well as conservatives for extra scrutiny.."

That has been said since day-one. Yea, the Republicans not only ignored those well known facts, but waged a media war that withheld those facts giving an intentional false façade that only their conservative groups were targeted.

Yet another example of Republican deception. Don't all for it.

"What's the ratio of liberal groups to conservative ones that got extra scrutiny" you ask? If you are going to ask that question you need to normalize it by the number of such groups. If I were a betting man, I'd bet it was mostly tea party applications that exploded during this period.

So, I guess that means the only ones who were using the IRS for political gain were the repubs. Never let a good non-scandal go to waste.
