IRS also targeted progressive groups

Washington (CNN) - The Internal Revenue Service targeted liberal groups as well as conservatives seeking tax-exempt status, a Democratic congressman charged on Monday after the agency acknowledged the inappropriate practice continued until last month.

Rep. Sander Levin said the term "progressives" was included on IRS screening lists of applicants for tax-exempt status made available to Congress on Monday.

Issa wanted to hang this on Obama but can't so he just doesn't care anymore which is shameful. Significant abuses regardless of the political gain should be investigated, so if the IRS is mishandling these non-profits AND it is to a significant degree then it is worth the tax payers money to investigate. But remember this only became a problem when the supreme court decided corporations are people so this is a new problem and one that the IRS was probably not staffed to deal with the onslaught.

Any new political group claiming tax exempt status should be looked at more closely, liberal or conservative. I wish they would do away with tax exempt status for churches that involve themselves in politics, as they are supposed to.

As an over 32 year, now retired, former IRS employee, .I KNEW the IRS would come out on top in this investigation. As the facts come out, it's being proven that I was right.

RIck – SO you believe the reporting when it says that the IRS targeted conservatives but, it's a "whitewash of the truth" when they report that liberals were targeted. You are so transparent... a lot like Issa.

No organization should be tax exempt, especially political and religious organizations. If it is truly non-profit, then it will owe no tax anyway. For example, let's say your "charity" collects $1 million in donations, uses 10% for actual operations, and the other 90% is distributed to the homeless. All of that is deductible so you will owe no tax.

The American Nazi party will be OK with the liberal groups being scrutinized but still find it offensive that conservative ones were.

the justification scam. of course it's a lie out of the hundreds and hundreds of progreesive filings i believe 3 got looked at while anything with tea party or conservtive or pro jewish groups and i believe some others. this was specifically done to slow down their message from getting out. both for the 10-12 election cycles. most are still waiting or have given up. if there are any real journalist left you need to probe the irs man who visited the white house over 300 times during this criminal activity. it is also apparent obama campaign was informed thru this irs program and used info that was gleaned from it. of course though the media has not done a darn thing!

If I had it, I would bet a million dollars on two things:

    1) the people who discovered the original targeting knew this, but chose to only blow the whistle on the Tea Party targeting, because they knew it would enrage conservatives, and

    2) two months from now conservatives will be 100% sure the whole thing was a liberal plot planned by Obama to attack conservatives.

I would also bet that nobody in the House will care one bit about this new revelation. After all, they got to rail against Obama about how he was trying to suppress conservatives - why would they waste time and energy explaining that they were utterly wrong?

Typical CNN story...in the tank for any far left liberal democratic cause or anything to prop up the loser occupying the White House...this scandal has Obama written all over it....I'm sure the ratio of liberal to conservative targeted groups is about 1 to 100...CNN – one of the most biased disingenous news organizations around...almost gives MSNBC a run for their money in terms of bias...

Of course this so called breaking news is irrelevant. Doesn't change the fact that the IRS were instructed by the White House to investigate tea party groups. That is against the law! Only question is how much Obama knew and when did he know it. Repugs should demand special council immediately. The self proclaimed most transparent administration in history surely won't mind.

This revelation was just about as predictable as a sunrise.

Interesting that CNN chose the "old style" commenting system for this particular article.

Other news sources were reporting the bipatisan nature of this scrutiny all along. Strange that CNN is just getting a whiff of it now. Scrutiny that is fully justified for both sides, btw.

Issa is gonna blow a gasket - not because the targeting was more widespread that he originally asserted, but because the public disclosure that the targeting was not restricted to tea party groups runs counter to his politically-motivated witch hunt against the Obama Administration.
