IRS targeting scandal reshaped by new details

Washington (CNN) - New disclosures that the Internal Revenue Service targeted liberals as well as conservatives in assessing applications for tax-exempt status have reshaped perceptions of the scandal, shifting the focus away from Republican claims of political villainy.

Investigations by the FBI, congressional committees, the Treasury inspector general's office and the IRS continue, but Monday's revelations bolstered assertions by agency officials and Democrats that the problem was egregious mismanagement instead of intentional misconduct by the Obama administration.

The scope of the original investigation was to look exclusively at conservative groups. During the course of that investigation it was discovered that more than conservative groups were targeted, but including those findings in the final investigative report could have been exceeding the mandate. Rep. Issa has been suppressing these facts all along.

I'm...shocked. The news Media and congress really ran with this one, didn't they?

Too bad not one news organization that reported on this nontroversy, had enough stones to do some actual investigating and find out the real deal. No you were too busy dropping to your knees for the GOP, and simply twisting and spinning the story from Fox ad nauseum.

Wouldn't you think that any group identifying itself as "conservative" or "liberal" is, in fact and in name, politically oriented?

I have never in my life seen such a witchhunt. The gop couldnt make Mr Obama a one term president so they decided to destory his ssecond term. They might as well get ready to work with another democrat president because as long as they keep playing these childish games we the people wont ever elect them again.

The media's use of the word "targeting" is a cause of all this mess

Let me get this straight....the organization that is responsible for tax collections wanted further review of groups wanting to claim tax free status.
The GOP/Teas in the House & Senate are right...how outrageous and scandalous.
If people find out that government workers might actually work properly at their jobs it would shine a light on the fact that the House & Senate GOP/Teas have done nothing in the last few years...except work to make Obama a one term president.
    Well played GOP. Bravo.

Now, on to the next scandal.....the President removed his coat today so he is obviously attacking the dry cleaning industry.
Get on it Issa, what are we paying you for?

Anyone who believes the administration is telling us the truth about that, REALLY is a fool! That was pure political terrorism, and nothing else.

Maybe Congress needs to investigate why the IRS only targeted smaller groups, and not the Big Players. Both liberal and conservative.

Maybe the rules need to be clarified. How can the IRS determine if a group is 'mostly not involved in politics'?

I don't expect any of that to happen, but it would be nice. I don't think any of the groups involved in any way in politics should be tax-exempt. The rule was initially for band-booster clubs and the like, not a cover for political action.

    @Steveo,

I agree. "Shortcutting" would be more accurate than "targeting". I said that myself a few weeks ago and received much correction. But that's clearly what this was.

Of course, no political group should be tax-exempt anyway, but Media is bored with that angle.

I know. Baffling to the mind right. Nontroversy after nontroversy. It would be nice if the House Ethics Committee investigates Issa for wasting taxpayer money and not disclosing all of the facts.

"The media's use of the word "targeting" is a cause of all this mess"

well, that and Issa/GOP/Teatrolls deliberately trying to manipulate the evidence via what got selectively leaked. But yeah, the MSM's nonstroversy paradigm and its blatant, overwhelming credulity whenever the GOP dangles red meat nontroversy talking points and incendiary rhetoric in front of them is what's at its root. The GOP/Teatrolls would cut it out if they thought, even for a second, that the MSM would treat all of their fabrications with even the slightest bit of critical thought and subject it to even the most rudimentary of research and analysis.

"I now believe zero that the government tells us. Zero."

That is the whole point of the GOP/Teatrolls pulling crap like manufacturing a ridiculous conspiracy theory and witch hunt out of this issue in the first place. They are and have been trying to destroy public trust and faith in our federal government ever since 1964. They look at things like Congress' s approval ratings and poll numbers showing massive fear, anger and resentment towards the federal government and say "Mission Accomplished."

Let me guess, the Republicans will now claim that if Obama knew exactly what every bureaucrat in the government was doing, they wouldn't have had to waste taxpayer dollars on this witch hunt.

Where is the outrage that liberal groups were targetted? There won't be any because liberals don't constantly play the victim.
I have never seen a group of folks so obsessed with persecution that each and every issue causes them to flail about, gnashing their teeth and flagellating themselves. This teabagger group really takes the cake, don't they? They come in wailing about taxes and electing every wackadoodle and village idiot they can get endorsed by Sarah Palin, but when the agency actually in charge of revenues takes steps to crack down on these tax cheats.... the wailing, gnashing, and flagellating begins.
It is really pathetic that they pose as a grassroots non partisan group, but they are actually a Koch brothers- backed hyperpartisan bunch of fools.
