Obama's full statement on same-sex marriage ruling

(CNN) - Responding to Wednesday's Supreme Court ruling giving historic wins to same sex marriage supporters, President Barack Obama released the following statement:

"I applaud the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act. This was discrimination enshrined in law. It treated loving, committed gay and lesbian couples as a separate and lesser class of people. The Supreme Court has righted that wrong, and our country is better off for it. We are a people who declared that we are all created equal – and the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.

This ruling is a victory for couples who have long fought for equal treatment under the law; for children whose parents’ marriages will now be recognized, rightly, as legitimate; for families that, at long last, will get the respect and protection they deserve; and for friends and supporters who have wanted nothing more than to see their loved ones treated fairly and have worked hard to persuade their nation to change for the better.

So we welcome today’s decision, and I’ve directed the Attorney General to work with other members of my Cabinet to review all relevant federal statutes to ensure this decision, including its implications for Federal benefits and obligations, is implemented swiftly and smoothly.

On an issue as sensitive as this, knowing that Americans hold a wide range of views based on deeply held beliefs, maintaining our nation’s commitment to religious freedom is also vital. How religious institutions define and consecrate marriage has always been up to those institutions. Nothing about this decision – which applies only to civil marriages – changes that.

The laws of our land are catching up to the fundamental truth that millions of Americans hold in our hearts: when all Americans are treated as equal, no matter who they are or whom they love, we are all more free."

Obama 2008 – Obama told MTV he believes marriage is "between a man and a woman" and that he is "not in favor of gay marriage." this is the leader of the pack here, never a belief one. no convictions, no morals. I sheep that will not lead but always blindly follow right off the cliff.

@ woman in California " keeping "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the dollar bill."

Sad when religious zealots revise history. This was not on the money in 1776. the original motto is "E pluribus Unum", one out of many. The push to put this on money was started in the 1800's, the motto was officially adopted in 1956.

Actually the continental congress coin of 1776 says on one side: "(symbolic) time flies (latin), mind your business". Perhaps this is wise advice for conservative historical revisionists!

"For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. Their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in their own persons the due penalty for their error" (Rom. 1:26–27).
"Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise acted immorally and indulged in unnatural lust, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire" (Jude 7).
So shameless act has been accepted as permissible thing in our country, God save our country from Eternal Fire.

I have to ask myself how American will feel about giving our gay military personnel and their dependents full benefits after this ruling. the ability to pull their benefits as all hetero counter parts have had for years. I have to ask if they have even thought that far ahead, and how they will react when they do realize this is going to happen. I say to myself its about time for equality for all citizen of the US not just for the religious and hetero sexual. may god bless all Americans not just the few but for all

Well, I tend to think one of the motivations of the SC in pawing through their decisions, is they found it wrong that some Americans had tax, inheritence, insurance and other "rights" that were being denied to others-solely based upon sexual orientation. I tend to think that Americans are fair-minded, and the argument that if one serves our great nation, their benefits and priviledges should be no different simply because who they may love. There certainly should have been other considerations in the decisions today, but the economic ones were significant.

It's unfortunate that we're focusing on gay marriage rather than the constitutionality of treating married people as superior to single individuals. That was the real problem with the law. Not that same-sex couples couldn't inherit money but that non-married people can't inherit money.

Are you seriously quoting scripture to condemn a court decision in a country where where supposedly exists the separation of church and state?

If you want to live in a country where the church has free reign to dictate what you can and cannot do, it's time to move out because that's not here!

I grew up in the age of Stonewall, was even fired from a job because I was gay and I never thought in my lifetime I would see this come to pass. What a wonderful day for all LGBT folk and, in fact, for all of us – now we must work and press the Congress to correct the agregious mistake the Supreme Court made in their voting rights ruling yesterday – unless all of us are equal, none of us are safe!

As a believer, I don't oppose gay marriage; I don't agree with it, but I won't oppose it. What I oppose is the imposing upon how we as believers live our lives. If we don't host a gay marriage in our church, we face a civil lawsuit for discrimination. That's where it really hits – the government is telling the church what it can and cannot do. That violates the original intent of separation of church and state. If you want to have gay marriage, that is your right, but demanding that the church bless it and marry you is not your right.

Love conquers all?..one of the four truths that defined marriage has been struck down..The other three are age restrictions on marriage ( in some countries around the world , 10 year old girls are marrying 30 year old men ), marrying a close relative ( incest breeds genetic defects ) and of course one spouse only. ( many countries and cultures permit a man to have multiple spouses ) ..Welcome to a more 'Tolerant' America ".

I am disgusted by the ruling and this response from the president (note lower case). "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it:.......Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife; and they shall be one flesh." This is the first marriage designed by God, man and woman, not man and man, or woman and woman. Only the God designed marriage of man and woman can fulfill God's commandment to "Be fruitful, and multiply...and they shall be one flesh." I am very disappointed in myself and all the other Christians that have remained silent. We should be marching on our Nation's Capitol; we should be withholding campaign contributions and we should be praying, unceasingly, loud and everywhere, not just in the confines of our churches and our homes. I am reminded of a poem written by Judge Roy Moore, excerpts: "We've voted in a government that's rotting at the core, Appointing Godless Judges who throw reason out the door...You think that God's not angry, that our land's a moral slum? How much longer will He wait before His judgment comes? If we who are His children, will humbly turn and pray; Seek His holy face and mend our evil way: Then God will hear from Heaven and forgive us of our sins, He'll heal our sickly land and those who live within. But, American the Beautiful, if you don't - then you will see, A sad but Holy God withdraw His hand from Thee."

Bait and switch? Not. I suggest you look up what the phrase means when it comes to making a political argument. I'm feeling generous today, though. So, here we go.

Suppose you have a weak argument on a given topic, but you also have an unrelated emotional issue that gets everyone all fired up. Bait and switch would mean to argue against the weak topic by arguing about the emotional issue.
