Wendy Davis: From teen mom to Harvard Law to famous filibuster

(CNN) - The Texas state senator whose filibuster of an abortion bill became a national phenomenon has a long history of persisting against tough odds.

Wendy Davis - the 50-year-old Democrat who stood and spoke for 13 hours Tuesday at the Texas Capitol - went from being a teen mom to a Harvard Law School grad.

Thanks to Ms. Davis for showing that some of us Texans are smart. Rick Perry almost ruined it for our great state.

This little news story demonstrates 3 things:
First, the appropriate use of a filibuster- on a bad law that diminishes the rights of women from a class of people too ignorant to grasp the damage they are doing. Davis also demonstrated the appropriate WAY to filibuster- to talk about the law- for hours- not the cowardly cloakroom thumbs down threats the GOP issues in the Senate, now over 440 times in 5 years.
Second, this woman, and her cause are now heroes in the Civil Rights movement- and by extension, this forces the GOP to be the bad guys, taking existing, settled legal rights away, and forcing women to undergo silly, demeaning procedures to get what they and their doctors have legal right to. It makes the GOP look like the Taliban.
Third, this graphically demonstrates Republican over-reach. The public is watching gentlemen, as you attempt to curtail legal rights, voting rights and workers' rights, in Texas, the old South and all around the country where you hold office. The hundreds of people in the Texas state house were a warning. You would be smart to observe the anger you are making in everyday citizens-they'll remember, they'll vote!

Democracy in action ain't always pretty(she is easy on the eyes though), but, when fighting the American Taliban, it's war.

The haters still thnk that after what Ms. Davis did last night for women's rights that Hilary can't win in 2016?
This is the start of the fight for women, Blacks, Latinos and gays. The old white males are going to be spanked come 2014 and beyond. We are in the 13th year of the 21st century not the old west.
The SCOTUS got it wrong yesterday and Texas immediately set up their new rules for voting in what is becoming a purple state.
    Davis for governor!!!!!!!!!

Don't worry...this was all for naught. Gov. Perry will call a special session for the vote and the bill, thankfully, will pass.

@dean, when the day comes that as a man you are raped and get pregnant by your attacker or you are denied birth control and/or prenatal care and you are forced to carry a child for nine months because of your party of white old men who know absolutely nothing about women then you can come back and let us know how the oops governor "thankfully" passing this already defeated bill works for you.
The talk here at work today (besides the horrendous ruling of the SCOTUS on voter rights) is the guts that Wendy Davis had to stand up dor women's rights and, remember, NOT all women are married to Neanderthals and young people re not standing in line to join your group of fools either.
