Republicans grill acting IRS chief over targeting probe

Washington (CNN) - The acting head of the Internal Revenue Service said Thursday that no evidence has emerged that liberal groups came under the same kind of extra scrutiny as some conservative groups when the agency assessed their applications for tax-exempt status.

An initial report on the IRS targeting scandal made public this week by Daniel Werfel, the IRS principal deputy commissioner, led to the disclosure that IRS workers flagged liberal groups as well as conservative groups in trying to determine if applicants were eligible for the tax-exempt status available to social welfare organizations.

"So far, the evidence only shows conservatives being targeted, not just flagged, but targeted," Camp said.

"Werfel acknowledged that no evidence so far showed liberal groups faced the same kind of delays and questioning that some conservative groups faced."

Actually, several progressive groups have now come forward showing that it took them well over a year to obtain their tax-exempt status and it delayed and hampered their ability to raise money during that time too, just like the Teatroll groups are claiming.

The more they grill, the more I get ill. Seems anymore, republicans squawk like two pound robins every chance they get. Kinda insecure, don't you know.

Indeed, Sniffit. The game show was a flop before it ever started. For GOPerville. For the media. For Issa.

There's absolutely no evidence to support that clam. And the Democrats claim that progressive movements were targeted has already been debunked by the IG as completely untrue.

Make ALL 501(c)'s illegal and there will be no groups to target!
Allowing any of them tax exempt status was a huge mistake!
Every one of them, both liberal and conservative, are simply money-launderers for political campaigns!

I find it amusing that the Obamaites on here keep forgetting that the IRS admitted that they targeted only conservative groups, someone pled the 5th and another person was fired. You guys will believe anything possible to support your guy. It's really sad. How can you not be more skeptical of the government is beyond me. Clearly, you have forgotten the Bush years.

It's beginning to look like conservative and liberal groups alike were targeted. Some were delayed because of extra scrutiny. The difference is that conservatives viewed delays as a big "government conspiracy" and started whining about it.

I'm just wondering how all of those people that were singing Chris Christy's praises just a few weeks ago feel about him now? Christy is the same as always, he's just been trying to distance himself from that clown car of whackos before it goes over the cliff.

Here's a little message to you from Chris....

In the words of Kool Moe Dee.....

    How ya like me now?!?!?!

Not true. The IRS has always reported that all types of groups were targeted due to poor procedures, which were intended to streamline the workflow.

Misconception arises from the fact that the initial IG report was tasked to look at ONLY conservative groups, because they were the primary demographic that was complaining so loudly. The final report stayed within the scope of the investigation and reported ONLY about conservative groups.

ok lefties.... produce the evidence. name any liberal group that had their application held up and essentially denied for over 3 years and through two election cycles. crickets.....

This guy is lying, and we all know it.

The only way you can get any truth, out of the Obama administration, is to get an independent prosecutor, that Obama doesn't control.

"IRS auditor reaffirms that conservatives, not liberals, were targeted"...."Treasury: IRS targeted 292 Tea Party groups, just 6 progressive groups"........ maybe try reading other news sources than just CNN and msm, you will be surprised what is really going on........ but then again, you wouldn't believe anyway, so why bother.......

So your answer is just "nuh uh!!!!"? All they have to do is show that their application's date and the date of issuance of their tax-exempt status were over a year apart. Boom...easy peasy proven. Nobody's challenging their claim that it took them well over a year because the fact is that it did. The IG's letter in response to Levin excoriating him was nonsense. He's defending having done a bad job. The BOLO memos clearly show that liberal groups were "targeted"...as stupid as the word "targeted" is to use in this situation. The IG's letter focused SOLELY on whether "progress" and "progressive" were used and did not address every term in the BOLO memos indicating that liberal groups were targeted. He's being deliberately obtuse in order to defend himself from what now appears to be a completely shoddy investigation on his part.

Calm down. Bad for your health. It says "some conservative groups", not all, and those groups probably deserved it.

The first group to file suit against the IRS is from northern California, "NorCal Tea Party Patriots". Just look at their web site. The mission statement claims that while they do not endorse political candidates, they do offer recommendations. They even have "voter booth guides" that people can download, print out, and take into the voting booth with them. Their event calendar is loaded up with fund raisers that feature big donors as guest speakers, or others that feature political candidates.
