Texas senator hijacked Democratic process, says Perry

(CNN) – The Texas state senator who filibustered a measure placing strict new curbs on abortion was operating outside the normal procedures for passing legislation, the state's Republican Gov. Rick Perry asserted Thursday.

Perry also claimed Democrat Wendy Davis was ignoring her own past as the daughter of a single mother in her bid to prevent abortion rights from being restricted in the Lone Star State.

"I'm all about honest, open debate," Perry said at a national "Right to Life" convention in Dallas. "Parliamentary tactics are certainly nothing new. But what we witnessed Tuesday was nothing more than the hijacking of the Democratic process. And this is simply too important a cause to allow the unruly actions of a few to stand in its way."

Davis stood and spoke for 13 hours Tuesday to prevent a vote on a measure that would have banned abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, as well as placing tight new standards on abortion providers.

At 3 a.m. Wednesday, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst stepped to the Senate floor to declare the bill dead and the special session over, though Perry announced later he was calling the legislature back into session to continue considering the bill.

Davis, who wasn't permitted to sit down or speak off-topic, became a hero to supporters of abortion rights nationwide. Her biography – the child of a single mother, who after having her own child at 19 worked her way through community college and Harvard Law – was cited an example of perseverance in the face of enormous obstacles.

But Perry argued Thursday that biography should instead have provided the Democratic lawmaker guidance in her personal views on abortion.

"The fact is, who are we to say that children born into the worst of circumstances can't grow to live successful lives?" Perry said. "In fact, even the woman who filibustered in the Senate the other day was born into difficult circumstances. She was the daughter of a single woman. She was a teenage mother herself. She managed eventually to graduate from Harvard Law School and serve in the Texas Senate. It's just unfortunate that she hasn't learned from her own example, that every life must be given a chance to realize its full potential and that every life matters."

Responding to those remarks later Thursday, Davis said Perry's statement lacked "dignity and tarnishes the high office he holds.

"They are small words that reflect a dark and negative point of view," she continued. "Our governor should reflect our Texas values. Sadly, Gov. Perry fails that test."

Cecile Richards, the president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, also reacted sharply to Perry's speech.

"Rick Perry's remarks are incredibly condescending and insulting to women," Richards said. "This is exactly why the vast majority of Texans believe that politicians shouldn't be involved in a woman's personal health care decisions. Women are perfectly capable of deciding whether to choose adoption, end a pregnancy, or raise a child, and they don't need Rick Perry's help making that decision."

The difference is Rand Paul followed the rules this chick did not. She did everything in her power to ignore the process.
It does not matter it will pass one way or another. Next time it will be behind close doors, same way Obama passed ObamaCare, middle of night behind close doors.

Wrong again. Wendy Davis followed the rules, and someone made sure to hold her to the last letter of them. No, what stopped the vote were *citizens* protesting from the balcony over what they felt was the capricious treatment afforded to Sen. Davis. Davis may have started the process, but her filibuster was forcibly shut down before midnight.

Republicans were then at a loss as to what to do about the loud protestors, and before they knew it they were out of time.

and to think that this all could have been avoided had her mother been a whacko liberal like her and opted to go to planned abortion instead. she spits on her mother with her actions.

Gotta call BS on your false equivilence here as neither Planned Parenthood nor legal abortion existed when Senator Davis was born fifty years ago. Granted, abortions happened, but they were done in unsafe, unsanitary conditions, and many women died or were left disfigured. By filibustering this legislation, she's ensuring that NO WOMAN ever has to be subjected to such conditions again.

Funny how when TEA/GOP does everything in their power to subvert the will of the majority of voters, they say they are being "patriots", but when anyone opposes them they are called terrorists. ANY TEA/GOP office holder talking about "highjacking" the democratic process is being hypocritical at best, and an outright liar at worst. These TEA/GOP cry-babies have been shouting about being victims for years, while doing whatever it takes to victimize their opponents. Remember their crying about a kids cartoon being EPA propaganda? The only right of the individual they believe in is their God-given right to infringe on the rights of ANYONE who doesn't kneel before them and kiss their elitist ring.

The difference is that Repulicans are hypocrits! We can do it, but you can't. You have to pay taxes, we don't. You have to follow the rules, we don't. You need to serve and go to war, we don't.
Time and time again. Why would anyone vote for a repulican. Hopefully Texas will wake up and change to a battle ground, then the rep/teabaggers will never see the executive office for a really long time.
Ladiesa and Gentleman, I'm sorry! I'm don't have a short attention span and will never forget the first decade of 2000 when we had the worst president in the 21st centuary. The Repulican Party screwed us and gave away alot of our wealth for nothing. BTW, all the other countires see this too, but for some reason we can't.

Indeed. So they tampered with the computer records in an attempt to make it look like the vote happened on time and were caught for doing it.

The GOP mantra has been ruining our Country for decades. Just tell teenagers they can't have birth control when they're bombarded by sex-charged advertising, forbid them to have an abortion so that an unwanted child is born into miserable, hopeless circumstances, incarcerate those same children when they try to steal a better life, and then kill them when their misery causes them to commit some awful crime. It's disgusted me my entire life what hypocrites these entitled Elites force upon the citizens of the United States. It's no wonder we've become the laughing stock of the entire world.

    from the article:

".... It's just unfortunate that she hasn't learned from her own example, that every life must be given a chance to realize its full potential and that every life matters."
    --––
Spoken by a man who is proud of the fact that his state just executed its' 500th inmate since 1976. "Forgive and forget?" Forget about it. "Jesus saves." That concept is toast with Christian conservatives, too.

Bait & switch... bait & switch....
    ***************
How is that bait and switch? Perry is arrogant enough to say to her that everyone has to struggle as a single, divorced mother at 19: how si pointing out the huge holes in his values a bait and switch? Not everyone graduates from Harvard Law School, and certainly not Perry ( C student and Texas A&M, and a cheerleader). How can self-described small government conservatives have the arrogance to decide the outcome of every pregancy without taking one iota of responsibility for the lousy policies that ensure most single moms and kids born out of wedlock never get a shot at a decent life? The willingness of conservative ideologues to ignore the implications of their policies never ceases to astonish me. " Hey, its not my problem"; it is our problem when the majority of these women add kids never suceed and never have a chance to reach their full potential, and we see one possible end result: a celebration of the 500th execution in TX since they brought back capital punishment. Does anyone on the Right see the disconnect there, or are they just too busy plotting how they are going to take us back to their mythical Golden Age?

The "patriots" in the gallery simply used the tactics the TP "patriots" employed at ACA town hall meetings and sanctioned by the GOP leadership.

Pompadour Perry claimed it was the "will of the people" then, now it is illegal?

    "hijacking democracy"

This from the guy whose immediate response to the SCOTUS's VRA decision was to sign a brand new TX re-districting map into law that is designed to attenuate the rapidly growing electoral power and prominence of the Hispanic/minority community in TX.

IOKIYAR. It would be laughable if it wasn't so infuriating.

No, what Gosnell did was NOT legal, which is why he is in prison. You equating Gosnell with legal abortion procedures would be like equating a person who shoots in self defense with the massacre at Sandy Hook.

I find Perry to be a man without substance and therefore whenever he speaks I automatically assume what he says will have lots of diarrhea . Well, he spoke and confirmed the presence of verbal diarrhea. I find it wonderful that Davis did what she did and as a result she should be renown as a hero to women and their rights. She is the finest example of a true American. One who stands up and protects her rights based on their principles. If only more Americans were like her!
