Obama issues statement on Egypt

(CNN) - President Barack Obama called on the Egyptian military late Wednesday to "move quickly" and return full authority back to "a democratically elected civilian government as soon as possible."

Read his full statement below.

As I have said since the Egyptian Revolution, the United States supports a set of core principles, including opposition to violence, protection of universal human rights, and reform that meets the legitimate aspirations of the people. The United States does not support particular individuals or political parties, but we are committed to the democratic process and respect for the rule of law. Since the current unrest in Egypt began, we have called on all parties to work together to address the legitimate grievances of the Egyptian people, in accordance with the democratic process, and without recourse to violence or the use of force.

The United States is monitoring the very fluid situation in Egypt, and we believe that ultimately the future of Egypt can only be determined by the Egyptian people. Nevertheless, we are deeply concerned by the decision of the Egyptian Armed Forces to remove President Morsy and suspend the Egyptian constitution. I now call on the Egyptian military to move quickly and responsibly to return full authority back to a democratically elected civilian government as soon as possible through an inclusive and transparent process, and to avoid any arbitrary arrests of President Morsy and his supporters. Given today’s developments, I have also directed the relevant departments and agencies to review the implications under U.S. law for our assistance to the Government of Egypt.

The United States continues to believe firmly that the best foundation for lasting stability in Egypt is a democratic political order with participation from all sides and all political parties —secular and religious, civilian and military. During this uncertain period, we expect the military to ensure that the rights of all Egyptian men and women are protected, including the right to peaceful assembly, due process, and free and fair trials in civilian courts. Moreover, the goal of any political process should be a government that respects the rights of all people, majority and minority; that institutionalizes the checks and balances upon which democracy depends; and that places the interests of the people above party or faction. The voices of all those who have protested peacefully must be heard – including those who welcomed today’s developments, and those who have supported President Morsy. In the interim, I urge all sides to avoid violence and come together to ensure the lasting restoration of Egypt’s democracy.

No transition to democracy comes without difficulty, but in the end it must stay true to the will of the people. An honest, capable and representative government is what ordinary Egyptians seek and what they deserve. The longstanding partnership between the United States and Egypt is based on shared interests and values, and we will continue to work with the Egyptian people to ensure that Egypt’s transition to democracy succeeds.

Wow, Impressive. What with CIA redemption programs, supporting puppet regimes such as the Shah of Persia, incarceration without trial for decades, waterboard torture, one million hits of crystalmeth consumed in the USA in any given year, President Obama still has time to play glorious self appointed American World Ruler. No matter how bad it is in Egypt what right does the USA to meddle? Tragically the USA has now moved their weaponry to Australia as a Force for peace against the Asians by the establishment of a USA military base on our shores, after having of course alienated and made enemies of most of the Arab World. Good one Obama

Correction, one BILLION hits of Crystal meth consumed in the USA in any given year. As one can see by Obama's rhetoric, the USA doesn't do things in a little way.

Its a hard evolving world. How can man make Democracy work on an environment of unyielding extreme conservative views. Even under the current US economic & other problems, and with American people's support, President Obama still have problems getting the support of Bohner & his Repubs accept his solutions for the problems. Apart from the Dubai World, there seem to be no other successful governance experiment in the Moslem World currently. Maybe more studies should be undertaken to see what makes Dubai tick & how effective the system works out in the rest of the Moslem Countries.

Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood were not supporting basic human rights or free practice of religion, allowing the Muslims to openly attack, burn, rape kill and seize property from the much older Christian Community in Egypt. John Kerry and Obama were ignoring the USA's own requirements that Human Rights fully be followed or no assistance would be given Egypt, but they broke their own rules, and like in the USA decided which laws to enforce and which to ignore. Obama was wrong not supporting our long time partner Mubarak with whom we had "established agreements", and is wrong now by supporting Morsi who had taken power in a dangerous and corrupt Election, and was forcing a new Constitution with Sharia Law,without the inclusion of other groups in the process, allowing genocide of Christians.

The protesters who wanted to be Free happily accepted Obama's support thinking he would help in bringing Real Freedom to Egypt, but instead he brought in a trojan horse, of course the people believed he was going to help the Egyptian people bring in Real Freedom, but instead is putting them back in chains under a far worse form of government. President Obama knew just as Mubarak knew and warned that if he left the Muslim Brotherhood would take over. So Mubarak warned he was leaving that the Muslim Brotherhood would take over and as he predicted, they did with President Obama's blessings. We're seeing this as it's happening in Egypt and yet American's are more foolish than the Egyptians because the Egyptian people won't be fooled again by the Obama administration and he knows it, so he is out to protect the Islamic (shariah) form of government that's not yet been totally installed. President Obama now is talking about how the Egyptian Military should move quickly and return back to a democratically elected civilian government. The so called civilian elected government was elected in less than honorable conditions, the election Morsi was elected in was not above board. President Obama uses the word Freedom to gain support, no other reason. President Obama was quick to jump right in knowing he would get immediate support from the Egyptian people against a dictator then threw the people to the lions by helping in getting a Muslim Brotherhood member elected who he knew would install shariah law. The Egyptian people I pray will get their Freedom no matter the costs, and American's I pray will smarten up. God Bless America, Israel, the NRA and all Real Freedom Fighting Patriots.
