State Department admits Kerry was on yacht day of Egypt coup

(CNN) - After the emergence of photographs showing Secretary of State John Kerry on his 76-foot yacht “Isabel” on Nantucket Sound on Thursday, the State Department issued an embarrassing correction Friday morning, back-tracking and acknowledging that the Secretary was in fact on the yacht on Wednesday, the day the Egyptian military staged a coup against democratically-elected Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy.

Originally, State Department officials were quick to deny a Wednesday tweet from CBS News’ Mosheh Oinounou that: “A @CBSThisMorning producer just spotted Secretary of State Kerry on yacht in the Nantucket Boat Basin. No response when she shouted ‘Morsi.’”

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki issued a statement Wednesday saying “any report or tweet that he was on a boat is completely inaccurate.”

“Since his plane touched down in Washington at 4 am, Secretary Kerry was working all day and on the phone dealing with the crisis in Egypt,” Psaki said. “He participated in the White House meeting with the President by secure phone and was and is in non-stop contact with foreign leaders, and his senior team in Washington and Cairo.”

But overnight, photographs emerged showing Kerry on “Isabel” and taking in some kayaking on Thursday.

The New York Daily News just published some of them.

On Friday morning, Psaki issued a second statement, acknowledging that Kerry was “briefly on his boat on Wednesday.”

Kerry again swamped by nautical controversy

She went on to say that “Secretary Kerry worked around the clock all day including participating in the President’s meeting with his national security council, and calls with Norwegian Foreign Minister Eade, Qatari Foreign Minister al-Attiyah, Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu, Egyptian Constitution Party President ElBaradei and five calls Ambassador Patterson on that day alone and since then he continued to make calls to leaders including Emirati Foreign Minister bin Zayed, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr.”

An administration official added that none of those calls happened while Kerry was on his boat.

No, it is not a big deal. It only shows the incompetence of this administration and our DNI. How in the world this came as a surprise?

Joh. Kerry celebrating U.S national holiday with his family and friends in his yacht. Whats wrong with that? How do you expect people to perform well on their duties if they cant even get a day off on holiday? There was nothing urgent that kerry could have done or could do about the riot.

And if Obama wants to relax for awhile on the golf course on every other "presidential" trip - or spend $60-$100 million on the likes of an an African vacation with the wife and kids and in-laws every year - why shouldn't he? (Gee, I think that maybe because the likes of Obama and Kerry SHOULD be held to a higher standard - 'cause they certainly consider themselves "leaders" of a higher standard (albeit the rest of us don't). I mean - in their eyes, why should WE question that kind of stuff - we're only the peons who pay for all of this . . . .

Come on, it's not like he was a Republican goofing off during a crisis, The President is on the golf course, John Kerry is on his Yacht and Biden is on the beach, what's the big deal.

Everyone in that administration works their tale off, protecting, presenting and keeping this Country in the best shape possible, irregardless of the opposition and lack of the slightest cooperation from the non-american-like republicans. There is little Mr. Kerry is unaware of, regarding any foreign issue and I am certain that holds true, especially in regards to the coup in Egypt.

Blah blah blah.. what difference does it make that John Kerry was having some vacation when Egypt implodes.. we cannot cure every ill in the world nor should we try. People need to,work things out for themselves. Now if Congress would work as hard as the Secretary of State and his predecessor we would be in good shape.

Zzzzzzz... the main problem is the spokespeople rushing to give answers to the press. That's one of the first orders I'd likely issue to everyone in the administration if somebody was stupid enough to elect me president. "It's actually okay to tell the press that you were not personally with the Secretary, so you will research it and get back to them." In other words, rather than a reflex answer because you think you're supposed to feed the media beast immediately, tell the media beast to sit on its haunches until you've had the chance to find out for sure.

Nobody really cares whether Kerry was actually on his yacht when everything happened. The only "scandal" here is that the spokesperson rushed to provide an answer based on a reasonable assumption - given that Kerry was known to be working during the day. It's a completely reasonable assumption since the spokesperson was not actually with Kerry and only knew that Kerry was working, but as we can see assumptions can be wrong even if they are completely reasonable.

People. The majority of voters re elected this President. In a short while you will be able to put forth another candidate to represent your views. I hear Paula Deen is looking for work.

Nobody cares that Kerry might have been relaxing on his yacht, that is not the point. The point is that this administration has no credibility. Their spokesman apparently feels compelled to lie about everything

I don't care if Kerry was yachting around Nantucket. What bothers me are the initial knee-jerk cover-up lies that come out of official DC....and then have to be retracted. Why lie in the first place.....just for the hell of it ???

Kerry (Ketchup Boy) was on his multi-million dollar yacht, the Clueless One (Obama) is or will be out playing golf, as usual! All this during a serious, game-changing coup in Egypt. Can you imagine the actual situation if Egypt was NOT considered an ally of the USA?! Oh yes! It's obvious, leading from (way) behind.

What a bunch of incompetents starting from Mr. Obama on down. Do we really need to wonder why América is going down the tubes?!

    Thank you Mr. Obama!!!

Net... Net... With this Administration you can pretty much assume the first answer is a lie. Follow ups will also be a lie, until someone catches them in the lie. At that point they will start blaming anyone and everything else. I wish it was not so predictable, but that is way only the Kool-aid drinkers are still blindly accepting everything they say.

So what? The federal government does now participate in teleworking. He was monitoring the events from the yacht, which he probably renamed "State 2."
