State Department admits Kerry was on yacht day of Egypt coup

(CNN) - After the emergence of photographs showing Secretary of State John Kerry on his 76-foot yacht “Isabel” on Nantucket Sound on Thursday, the State Department issued an embarrassing correction Friday morning, back-tracking and acknowledging that the Secretary was in fact on the yacht on Wednesday, the day the Egyptian military staged a coup against democratically-elected Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy.

Originally, State Department officials were quick to deny a Wednesday tweet from CBS News’ Mosheh Oinounou that: “A @CBSThisMorning producer just spotted Secretary of State Kerry on yacht in the Nantucket Boat Basin. No response when she shouted ‘Morsi.’”

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki issued a statement Wednesday saying “any report or tweet that he was on a boat is completely inaccurate.”

“Since his plane touched down in Washington at 4 am, Secretary Kerry was working all day and on the phone dealing with the crisis in Egypt,” Psaki said. “He participated in the White House meeting with the President by secure phone and was and is in non-stop contact with foreign leaders, and his senior team in Washington and Cairo.”

But overnight, photographs emerged showing Kerry on “Isabel” and taking in some kayaking on Thursday.

The New York Daily News just published some of them.

On Friday morning, Psaki issued a second statement, acknowledging that Kerry was “briefly on his boat on Wednesday.”

Kerry again swamped by nautical controversy

She went on to say that “Secretary Kerry worked around the clock all day including participating in the President’s meeting with his national security council, and calls with Norwegian Foreign Minister Eade, Qatari Foreign Minister al-Attiyah, Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu, Egyptian Constitution Party President ElBaradei and five calls Ambassador Patterson on that day alone and since then he continued to make calls to leaders including Emirati Foreign Minister bin Zayed, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr.”

An administration official added that none of those calls happened while Kerry was on his boat.

Stop spreading wrong information. What happened in egypt was not a military coup. How is it a military coup if that was the well of the egyptian people? Additionally, I thought fighting terrorism is a good cause. Muslim brother hood is a terrorist group. It is clear that you and obama are supporting terror across the globe.

I thought he was the envoy to the Middle East. Unfortunately some of us have to work Xmas when there's a work related emergency. Apparently not the case for the political class. Nice that he can AFFORD such a beautiful yacht on a politician's salary, he must be a diligent saver.

Give him a break. You don't know how hard it is to be Secretary of State. Terrible job. Poor guy needed a little R&R. He probably knew what was happening in Egypt but decided not to let it ruin his fun. People should lighten up. I'll bet even Superman took a couple of days off from saving the planet once in awhile. (Of course he could make the planet spin in reverse to create a re-do so he could fix things, but nonetheless.)

I hope Kerry enjoyed himself. Now he'd better get back to work.

Maybe this is where obama was when four Americans were being killed in Benghazi. When the going gets tough the cowards run for the hills.God help us all if this is the leadership running the once free world.

Could have something to do with the fact he's the Secretary of State and his main job is foreign affairs.

The thing that makes this so Obama-esque is that the now useless State Departement went overboard telling how many world leaders Kerry called that day...none from his yacht btw...to show how "hard" he is working!! Just another day in the useless and hypocritical Obama Administration. LOL!

big deal. even thought he had the yacht built overseas and tried to evade MA. state taxes by docking it in RI. and still has not paid up after he got caught, the best place for him to be during any crisis is out eating gin soaked raisins on his boat with momma t

Person in such an important position can make an impact in many ways. Given that Egypt is in chaos , he should have been in his office monitoring the situation with the key foreign affair officers.

The first and only reaction should have been "so what wherever the Secretary Kerry is located is his office".

INCREDIBLE If this was the Secretary of States actions during a crisis under Bush............. the hypocritical LEFT would never let the story die and it would be front page news across the US.

This is how the front page news would read......................"FILTHY RICH REPUBLICAN SEC of STATE found on his 76' YACHT during Int'l crisis" but instead he will get a pass.

Lies are just a part of this administration. I thought this was supposed to be an a transparent administration? I guess in some respects it is – we always know that whatever it says is actually the opposite.

I don't think that anyone had a problem with Sos Kerry taking some vacation days or even with him spending time on his yacht. I think there might be some concern if the State Dept doesn't know where the Secretary of State is. Either that seemed to be the situation or spokeswoman Psaki just told an outright lie. Not only did she say he was at work she states he attended White House meetings and was in contact with Foreign Ministers as well as his teams in Washington and Cairo. Yes he could have been in contact with them by phone ; however she states that reports of him being on a boat are "completely inaccurate". So did she have no idea where he was or was this just another official caught in a outright lie? Is there a department in this Administration that doesn't routinely lie? I haven't seen one yet.

Big deal that he was on his boat for the fourth of July weekend. He had just come back from a very intensive 12 day trip around the world and wanted to relax a little bit on his boat. By god don't these reporters have anything better to do than just hassle John Kerry who was on his boat and just trying to relax and have some down time. What has this world come to. Thee repubs are so desperate that they have resorted to this nonsense crap.

No problem with Kerry on boat. No problem with Kerry taking care of business on boat. BUT, if STATE cannot tell the truth about a small item, why should we thinlk they will tell the truth about an important item? That's the problem!
