Congressional Black Caucus members finally meet with Obama

Washington (CNN) - In their first meeting in more than two years, President Obama and members of the Congressional Black Caucus had voting rights, the economy and immigration reform at the top of the agenda.

The president sat down with one of his most important constituencies on the White House grounds for an hour and a half, according to participants.

Rand Paul aide's past as 'Southern Avenger'

(CNN) – Sen. Rand Paul's new media director, who also helped the Kentucky Republican write a 2011 book, has a past as a pro-Southern secessionist assuming a "Southern Avenger" persona while hosting a radio show.

Jack Hunter, who has made a number of provocative comments about race, was also a member of the pro-Southern independence group League of the South before he came to work for Paul.

Austin, TX (CNN) - Two weeks after her marathon filibuster against new abortion restrictions in Texas made her instant political celebrity, reality has set in for State Senator Wendy Davis.

Following the launch of a "Stand with Texas Women" bus tour with fellow Democrats to oppose the state's hotly contested abortion bill, Davis conceded to CNN the measure is likely to pass.

House GOP plans Obamacare pickle for Democrats

Washington (CNN) – House Republican leaders are discussing a series of Obamacare votes this month with the goal of putting House Democrats on the hot seat over the President's signature legislative accomplishment.

Now that the Obama administration has announced it will delay the requirement that businesses provide health insurance for a year, House GOP leaders plan to force Democrats to go on record on that decision and other specific provisions of the health care law, according to several House Republican congressional sources. For months House GOP leaders have stressed that highlighting the problems with implementing Obamacare is a central part of their 2014 midterm election playbook.

Booker still ahead in New Jersey Senate race

(CNN) – A month after entering New Jersey's U.S. Senate race, Newark Mayor Cory Booker remains far ahead of his rivals for the Democratic nomination.

A Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday showed Booker at 52% among New Jersey Democratic voters – more than forty points ahead of his closest rival, U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, who stood at 10%. A third competitor in the Democratic primary, U.S. Rep. Rush Holt, was at 8%.

Gov. Haley makes rare public disclosure

(CNN) – In a rare moment on Monday, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley shared publicly her experience being abused as a child.

Speaking at a press conference in Greenville on the state's efforts to combat child abuse, the Republican governor relayed her story, saying violence against children can happen in any community.

ACLU files new lawsuit pushing for same-sex marriage rights

(CNN) - The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit in Pennsylvania challenging the state's ban on same-sex marriages and refusal to recognize such marriages from other states.

A similar suit will be filed in Virginia, while an existing lawsuit in North Carolina will be amended to broaden the scope, the ACLU said Tuesday.

McDonnell denies wrongdoing in mansion controversy

(CNN) – Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell pushed back against allegations Tuesday that he improperly used resources from the Executive Mansion, saying he follows the same rules as former Virginia governors.

The Republican also denied that a company owned by one of his political donor's has received preferential treatment from the commonwealth.

Santorum to jump into Texas abortion ban battle

(CNN) – Rick Santorum's heading to Texas to put his support behind a controversial bill that would ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

According to a press release obtained by CNN that will be sent later Tuesday, Santorum will hold a news conference Thursday morning at the Texas state capitol in Austin.

Obama strongly considers withdrawing all troops from Afghanistan in 2014

(CNN) - President Barack Obama is seriously considering withdrawing all U.S. troops from Afghanistan in 2014, a senior administration official told CNN.

The official's comments came after The New York Times reported the administration was looking at speeding up the troop withdrawal to the "zero option," leaving no troops in Afghanistan.
