Republican ropes Clinton affair into immigration debate

(CNN) – Rep. Tim Huelskamp on Wednesday linked the ongoing immigration debate to former President Bill Clinton's extramarital affair.

Huelskamp, who was elected in 2010 with tea party support, repeated the same comment to multiple news outlets, but described the statement as one that was made "off hand."

His comments represent one of the biggest issues in the immigration debate: trust. Opponents say they don't trust the Obama administration to secure the border, even if potential legislation passed by Congress includes provisions for tighter enforcement and prevention.

It was a topic discussed in a lengthy meeting Wednesday among House Republicans on Capitol Hill, following the Senate's passage of an immigration reform bill late last month.

In addition to border security, opponents of immigration reform also question the Senate bill's provision for a pathway to citizenship for most of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country. Some Republicans call such a measure "amnesty."

Huelskamp isn't the first to link a trust issue to Clinton. When Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, was running for the Senate in Missouri in 2006, she made a similar remark while talking about the former president on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"I think he's been a great leader but I don't want my daughter near him," she said.

– CNN's Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

considering the GOP backed McCain and Gingrich who both cheated on their wives, and also re-elected Scott Brown – they might want to look in the mirror before casting stones

Trusting Obama w/ border security is like trusting Bill Clinton w/ your daughter – Rep. Tim Huelskamp. Well Congress who represents all sons and daughters of the United States has been unable to pass anything of merit for years now. Thus, Mr. Huelskamp and his associates should be deported off shore since they I've proven that they can't be trusted writing and passing legislation for the sons and daughters of the United States. This is their job. Implementation is not.Seems like Mr. Huelskamp is confused about his role in the chain of productivity. Focus simply of your role!!!

He is not an enforcer of the law. That is someone else's job. Stay within the mandate of your appointment!!!!!

Here's the problem... I don't like Demorats or Republicants. Criminals in both sides. But these days, i'm sicker of the GOP than I am the dems – don't like how they thump bibles, how they want to control my private life, how they want to deny me my promised benefits, how they don't give a squat about poor people, how they use namecalling and innuendo against people they don't like. Yeah... that about sums it up.

Nothing like trying to change the subject ... the only reason Repubs care about border security now is because it's a stall tactic. They'll do anything to prevent legislation President Obama supports pass.

Donkey Party makes the best point with his FACTS about illegal immigration during President Obama's terms. But hey, Repubs seem to be allergic to facts and prefer to be yanked around and treated like fools by the party leadership.

You really have to work hard at being a dimwit to be a Repub these days ...

@need a mirror: "considering the GOP backed McCain and Gingrich who both cheated on their wives, and also re-elected Scott Brown – they might want to look in the mirror before casting stones"

    Excellent post! Also:

    WI State Senator Randy Hopper
Pete Sessions and the Forty Deuce strip club in Vegas
Mike Duvall of the CA State Assembly (a family values guy who liked to brag about his exploits)
    Mark Sanford
    TN State Senator Paul Stanley
    John Ensign of NV

And that's just going back to 2009! A little google goes a long way ... but see, Repubs know their base are lazy, low-information voters, so they can tweet whatever lies they want and their voters will believe every word of it!

    Pathetic!
