Feminine hygiene products among items confiscated at Texas Capitol

(CNN) – As the Texas Senate debated a controversial measure placing new curbs on abortion on Friday, protesters at the state Capitol in Austin were prevented from bringing potential projectiles into the galleries, including feminine hygiene products.

Multiple people tweeted photos and descriptions of the search process and a Texas Department of Public Safety officer confirmed to CNN that security officers confiscated unopened feminine hygiene products for a time, but later allowed those items in.

Officers told CNN they had also confiscated used feminine products, as well as bottles of urine and feces.

On social media, many pointed to the fact that concealed weapons, legal in Texas with a permit, were still allowed into the galleries while the other things were not.

Debate over the Texas law has galvanized activists from both sides of the abortion argument.

On Friday, Lieutenant Gov. David Dewhurst wrote on Twitter he would enforce the body's rules of decorum to prevent outbursts from protesters.

The legislation would ban abortions past 20 weeks of gestation, require abortion clinics to become ambulatory surgical centers, tighten usage guidelines for the drug RU486 and require doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the clinic where they're providing abortion services.

Sen. Wendy Davis, a Democrat, tried to block the bill with a filibuster in June, talking for more than 10 hours in an attempt to run out the clock on the legislative session.

Gov. Rick Perry called a special session so the legislature could take up the measure again.

The measure passed the House on Wednesday on a 98-49 vote after hours of debate over proposed amendments. The Senate debated the measure on Friday.

CNN's Josh Rubin contributed to this report.

20 weeks sounds pretty realistic. why would someone considering an abortion wait longer than that. there ha to be some compromise just as there needs to be compromise on guns and other topics. bringing feces and urine to the building was a real class act by pro abortionists.

Maybe next session, the state legislature can consider concealed carry permits for tampons.

You can carry a concealed weapon but a tampon which is something most women carry with them all the time is forbidden. Can it get any more bizzare.

It's questionable whether any of the elected representatives within this structure, had a Mother. They sure seem intent on giving the state of Texas, one of the biggest political black eyes ever. My disgust for this is only topped by my intent to avoid this state, at all cost.

The Texas State Legislature is forcing fundamentalist, anti-science beliefs upon the women of Texas. This IS NOT about the GOPs care for children or the as yet unborn- this is about raw unbridled political power. Power that these people wield over women that makes then less than equal, less than human.

Throwing a tampon or sanitary napkin would not work well. They are too light in weight to go far. You'd have to put rocks in them. If you threw your gun, it could travel pretty far but I don't think you'd get it back and that could cost a financial loss.

The Texas Taliban and Ayatollah Perry confiscate tampons, pads and other paper products, but concealed gun owners get expedited access to the chambers. The War on women is their only interest. Stop this before they legislate burkas and revoke women's civil rights entirely.
Vote this stupidity out of Texas, and call your legislator to complain.

Keep fighting Texans don't let the Republican get away with cheating & gerrymandering in order to get their stubborn way. There is so many other way to fight against abortion, contraception, preventive education and many many other way. Putting all of these restrictions on women & their providers just make all you "texas republican men" not just small minded but tyrants just because they and their christian backers say so. What a bunch of hypocrites, they preach small government, freedom from govt.,etc. and they are the first to try and force something down peoples' throats.

Hilarious. You can bring in a gun, but not a tampon. Texas knows how to make itself look REALLY bad.

So what's the status of the voter fraud investigation from the last special session. They shouldn't be legislature should be allowed to convene until the give up who tampered with the clock and arrest have been made. I want to see some of these law and order conservative who are so concerned about voter fraud in elections which they can't come up with one actual case of to show the same concern for the actual voter fraud which took place last session.

Hey for all you murderers out there, this doesn't surprise me. You don't care about life, why should you care about carrying your 'feces' with you? Man this is totally gross. Typical of abortionists!
