Feminine hygiene products among items confiscated at Texas Capitol

(CNN) – As the Texas Senate debated a controversial measure placing new curbs on abortion on Friday, protesters at the state Capitol in Austin were prevented from bringing potential projectiles into the galleries, including feminine hygiene products.

Multiple people tweeted photos and descriptions of the search process and a Texas Department of Public Safety officer confirmed to CNN that security officers confiscated unopened feminine hygiene products for a time, but later allowed those items in.

Officers told CNN they had also confiscated used feminine products, as well as bottles of urine and feces.

On social media, many pointed to the fact that concealed weapons, legal in Texas with a permit, were still allowed into the galleries while the other things were not.

Debate over the Texas law has galvanized activists from both sides of the abortion argument.

On Friday, Lieutenant Gov. David Dewhurst wrote on Twitter he would enforce the body's rules of decorum to prevent outbursts from protesters.

The legislation would ban abortions past 20 weeks of gestation, require abortion clinics to become ambulatory surgical centers, tighten usage guidelines for the drug RU486 and require doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the clinic where they're providing abortion services.

Sen. Wendy Davis, a Democrat, tried to block the bill with a filibuster in June, talking for more than 10 hours in an attempt to run out the clock on the legislative session.

Gov. Rick Perry called a special session so the legislature could take up the measure again.

The measure passed the House on Wednesday on a 98-49 vote after hours of debate over proposed amendments. The Senate debated the measure on Friday.

CNN's Josh Rubin contributed to this report.

What type of person would carry feces and/or urine anywhere??? Nasty! If thrown on anyone, would that not be considered a hate crime? Assault with bodily fluids? Again, that's just nasty!!!

CHL holders can bring in guns and tampons aren't allowed? I don't have a problem with it. I know CHL holders and I'd trust them much more than impulsive women with their feminine products.

I have no sympathy for those protesters who were disgusting enough to bring containers of urine a feces. They are disgusting m0r0ns who would be doing more to hurt their cause than to help it if they through it. Of course, it is also possible they were plants by pro-lifers who planned to hurl the stuff then blame it on the pro-choicers. Either way, it is disgusting.

Confiscating feminine hygiene products is just perverse and strictly discriminatory.

Interesting.... This bill, when passed, will be subject to immediate injunction.

Ya gotta just love it! Rick Perry fights against gun control, but Texas is afraid of tampons and feminine hygene products! I guess the politicians would rather fight bullets than tampons:-)

okay Texas Senate, can you end this farce and pass the bill like you had already decided to pass since women got the right to vote... Texas Taliban Perry has to sign it so that it can be challenged in Federal Court

Those of you who have just a little medical or veterinary experience and who are interested is a high-paying career in crime should watch Texas closely. When the legal abortion clinics are gone you can grab a few crude tools and go to work! Your clients will be mostly scared, poor and desperate young women who don't have the money to leave the state or country and must risk their lives in your dirty hands. Don't be too concerned about the risks... most will survive and the infections and complications will happen after you've been paid. Best of all... they'll be too ashamed and frightened to even call the law! Sweet!

Republicans have sold Texas out. Elected to represent all of the people of Texas republicans have once again proven that they don't have to follow the law like everybody else does. They can lie and cheat and pass laws and nothing will happen to them. The supreme nincompoop governor has gotten away with treason and Texans can't do anything about it.

So now we know what women will be arrested for unless they have a legal to carry and conceal permit. And we're not talking about guns. Perry and the Texans that support him are moving back to the dark ages. Women won't be allowed to go out in public for one week each month. That's on next year's legislative agenda.

Watch out, the Taliban like government Rick Perry's wants come right along side the your precious gun rights. When you vote for the GOP / Tea Party your not going to get all the freedoms you think. You are going to get their moral and religious rule along with your freedoms. They promise freedom as long as it fits into their moral and religious ideals. If it does not then YOU are as much the enemy as the Democrats are. Read up on what Pat Robertson as to say and his impression of freedom. The born agains want to re-write science and the baptist protest soldiers funerals. Is that freedom ? I think not that is religious rule.

Protect life? Really? Yet the governor gets all giddy like some stupid school girl anytime someone is strapped down and legally murdered by him. What a joke of a governor. Texas A&M must turn out stupid graduates.

A sad day for Texas women. Lots of clinics that provide health care for uninsured women will close (because TX does not adequately cover uninsured), preventing women from accessing health care, including cancer screening. Real men and real Texans "care" about their women. Obviously, the "old boys club politicians" do not. Shame on them.
