Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Speier tour Asiana crash site in California

(CNN) – House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Jackie Speier took time out from immigration and student loan negotiations Thursday night to tour the Asiana flight 214 crash site at San Francisco International Airport.

"What we witnessed tonight was the community coming together," Speier told reporters after the tour.. The congresswoman represents California's 14th district. "We are so grateful that so many lives were saved. It could have been a very different situation."

San Francisco International Airport is located in Speier's district.

Pelosi, who's represented the nearby 12th district in San Francisco for nearly three decades, echoed her sentiments, thanking first responders on the ground for their efforts.

"Compliments we received from (NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman) about the cooperation on the ground here at the local level was something we were very proud of," said the former House speaker. "Thank god that more lives were not lost."

San Francisco airport director John Martin announced late Thursday night that the runway where Asiana Flight 214 crashed over the weekend should reopen Sunday.
