Obama says Martin's death a tragedy, asks nation to respect call for calm

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama called on Sunday for "calm reflection" following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

The president, in a statement, acknowledged an emotionally charged climate but concluded that "we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken."

Unless the mentality of the society changes nothing can be done in curbing gun violence. The society should accept that it is time to change rather than clinging on to second amendment rights.

Mr. President, just stop. You're a disgrace to this country and you should step down from your position immediately before you make America worse than what it already is.

The truth is.........are people who don't already own guns, going to have to arm themselves to protect themselves from the criminals in America? To protect themselves from street thugs? To protect themselves from the government?

When the black community creates a total lie, about what really happened, and when that lie gets exposed for what it was.....is the black community going to become even MORE criminal, because they were unsuccessful, with their lie?

That's the least president Obama can do , since unwisely interjecting himself into "selective" cases, appearing to be race baiting the public.

Are we doing all we can to teach our children that it's wrong to physically attack someone when they are doing something you don't like? No. Are we doing all we can to stop the perpetual race-baiting? No.

Obama wants so badly to be known for something in the History books other than "being the first black president"

He can push his Gun Violence stance all he wants.

Zimmerman not only passed a background check. He passed a 3 month long Federal one for his carry license. He got his weapon legally in every way and a court found he used it legally in this case.

Obama knows what he is doing. Just playing off Emotions for political gain.

It is a tragedy for the loss of the young man. However, no one knows what happen that night. One thing I know who knows is God. He was there how it start and it ends. He is the only witness for the young man who lost his life. May God heel the wound to the family lost child

First he gins up race hatred, now he goes after gun owners. Pretty despicable behavior, not something expected from the leader of the free world. A joke, in his case.

Of course it all has to go back to the political realm of gun control and 'stemming' the violence. Why can't... just for once we hear something released by the White House or congress that doesn't feature an underlying political agenda. How about leaving that part out. It makes it so much more sincere that way.

Obama brought politics into this case and did a great disservice to our justice system and to the already heated racial climate in society. He should be blamed for charges that were erroneously made against Zimmerman and the hard feelings from those who oppose the verdict. Most of us know that the government must defend our right to defend ourselves. If we wait for the government to arrive and provide us protection, we will probably be dead when they get there.

Gosh, I loved it right up until he used it as a platform for gun control.

Well said President Obama and thanks for helping the Martins to get a trial. They won that battle but lost the case.

Oh, great. NOW you're going to talk the "good talk" about compassion and understanding and respecting the justice system, while YOU and Sharpton and the liberal media caused this whole ruckus!! Hypocrite!

Don't worry Mr. President, there will be a civil suit against Zimmerman and maybe Spike Lee or someone else will put a bounty on his head.

Says the man shooting a shotgun for no reason.

No justice, no peace. Let's teach our children to act in violence against a disagreement of our judicial system. The jury has spoken. Not guilty. Does it need to be more? Does our nation feed upon violence?

I watched the entire trial, I switched sided constantly. America is founded upon equality. It is unfortunate that the "African-American" community wants to seek revenge. A community with no underatanding of there heritage. All they know is violence. As with this highlighted case

Oh Dear all knowing leader may we be able to defend ourselves or will dear corrupt leader and Eric Holder take care of everything for us?
Does everything about Obama have to be so awful and ham handed and corrupt?

Why does the idea of Martin as a martyr persist? If the wannabe-cop Zimmerman had not had a gun, perhaps the trial would have been of Martin as a murderer at worst, or as a batterer in the least. Martin would now be in jail for murder or on probation and in the juvenile system. The only thing that made any difference was A GUN. Zimmerman was not quoted as making racial statements while Martin was...Everyone from the president on down irresponsibly played the race card.

Trayvon Martin got what was coming to him and George Zimmerman saved the taxpayers years of incarceration fees. Assault a gun owner and see what happens to you. Walk unarmed at night and see what you risk happening to you. Dont want to die? Then don't assault others. Go home.

Please Mr. President, take the first and biggest step to stem the tide of gun violence by bringing our armed troops home.

Honor the real criminal?? I think not, the jury heard the evidence and set a man free for doing what all of us should have the right to do...protect ourselves from criminals. Something this president seems to think cops and government can do when in fact all they can do is react to the crime after the fact. The real tragedy is the fact that Trayvon bet his life that he could beat a guy up for following him without fear and found out otherwise. And why did he think that way? Because his parents and society taught him that way.
