Obama says Martin's death a tragedy, asks nation to respect call for calm

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama called on Sunday for "calm reflection" following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

The president, in a statement, acknowledged an emotionally charged climate but concluded that "we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken."

I can still hear the 911 call being tape being during the hearing, where George says, "they always get away with it!", and the tape that was played with the 911 operator saying, "Go back to your car!". George Zimmerman was determined to do something and stalked that young man.
George couldn't wait for the police to arrive, he was determined to act on his own, even though he hadn't seen Trayvon doing anything illegal.
And do it, he did!! Quick thinker, isn't George. Bad chronic liar but quick thinker!

Leadership without hypocracy... Do as I do... Nothing... I get the feelling it would be significantly more words if it were campaign season, to the same result, nothing... Every Florida citizen should own and carry a gun to protect themselves from thugs like Trayvon Martin. Don't a martyr to the far left wing agenda of honoring criminals and taking your right of self defense away. If the citizens of Chicago could defend themselves against the criminals terrorizing that city, the problem would get solved very quickly.

Why does everything need to be about race? Zimmerman is Hispanic but he's been labeled a white Hispanic and that is really offensive and just plain dumb

Without the gun, this would just be another unsolved murder of a Latino.

I guess according to some GZ should have let the man (yes, I said man) beat his head into the concrete. At least then this would be a non-story with the media. Unless GZ was black of course....then it is outrage.

Awesome job Obama make a public statement about the Martin case but don't say anything about the 19 firefighters that passed away in Arizona, lower the flag half-mast for them, say anything about Chris Kyle or lower the flag half-mast for him. His priorities always amaze me.

The judment has some elements of racism. Zimmerman should be dead honest to his conscience. There is no black or white man before God. We're all equal.

Funny how haters keep trying to pretend the country doesn't want Obama anymore. We elected him- twice. We love him and support him and wish the GOP would get out his way.

How can you put Mr. Vick in jail for three years for killing a dog but release Zimmerman for killing a human? White America has made their statement. Now that we are educated we need to make ours.

Yes we are a nation of laws, but apparently some individuals including politicians are above the law, (ex. back door banking for free political gifts) and that is the reality of the United States of America currently.

This president has a proven history of changing or ignoring laws as he sees fit. He is not a leader and I am tired of him making comments on every issue.

Prosecutions Material misrepresentations against Zimmermen not to mention the theatrics...WEAK... the jury saw through the prosecutions rolling story....not to mention Obama chiming in....that gets a Presidential WEAK

In all likelihood, if Zimmerman hasn't shot Martin, he would have died instead in a clear-cut case of murder. Would that have been okay, because Zimmerman doesn't look like Obama's hypothetical son?

Zimmerman is not a racist, but the president is.

Why is it that people believe the media has told them everything about this trial and they can form a verdict based on what they have "heard" in the media? I am so sick of race riots because of people believing the media has told them everything - verdict is in, whether we like it or not. Time to move on to the next big thing... I am sure there will be some other racially charged event that happens in the next couple days that the media will "tell all" about so that it can be judged in the media and not in the courtroom.

Exactly as he said. We are a Nation of Law. The jury has spoken. All the evidence has been presented. The jury took their time to carefully study the facts and made the decision. Lets move on and shame on people that are suggesting violence or revenge because of this trial.

So much hate and anger from some of you. Pray for both families because they need it now more than the hate and anger displayed from some of your comments.

He should have given a speech on how he should have kept his mouth shut about the case until he knew all the facts. He's the one who fueled the racial fire with his "If I had a son, he'd look just like Travon Martin."

The statement had point whatsoever other than rabble rousing. And now he's telling the same people to be calm.
