Poll: More Americans align with Democrats on immigration

(CNN) – In the ongoing attempt to reform the nation's immigration system, more Americans find themselves agreeing with Democrats than Republicans, according to a poll released Monday.

The Gallup survey indicated 48% of adults said the Democratic view on immigration – which wasn't specified during questioning – most closely aligned with their own. Thirty-six percent said the Republican stance came closer to their view. Another 17% said they didn't have an opinion or that neither side shared their opinions.

The poll was conducted over a long period of time – from June 13 to July 5. That span included the day when the Senate approved bipartisan immigration reform legislation.

In the battle to overhaul the country's immigration structure, unlikely alliances have formed in Congress, including the bipartisan Gang of 8 that developed the Senate's plan, which passed with votes from both parties last month.

However, in the House, the GOP has appeared divided over a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. After a recent meeting of the GOP caucus, participants described a 50-50 split between those who view such a pathway as necessary to immigration reform and those who view it as amnesty.

Most Republicans agree that increasing border security is a top priority, and in the Senate-approved bill, major efforts to ramp up resources on the border were included as a prerequisite to a pathway to citizenship.

Overall, more Democratic lawmakers have voiced support for passing some kind of comprehensive immigration reform legislation, while some Republicans say a piece-by-piece approach is more suitable.

In the poll, non-Hispanic whites were split between the Democratic and Republican views on immigration, while blacks and Hispanics supported the Democratic stance by large majorities.

The poll was conducted by telephone from June 13-July 5, with 4,373 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error was plus or minus two percentage points.

How many of those Dems live in a border state? Control the border first, then let the illegal law breakers become citizens.

They came her illegally, which means they broke the law. Just like Obama says, this is a nation of laws...everybody in this country would vote for border security if they lived in a border state. It doesn't effect you much if you don't. Learn the language, pay taxes just like everybody else.

Wassup needs t learn how to read. That means they asked about the positions, but did not attach a party label. Which makes it far MORE valid. Many republicons, or people who think of the rpublicon party as their "team" actually align with Democrats on most issues.

You just have to love the posters from the Right.
    1. Polling is a Science- it is very accurate. You may choose to not believe it- but given the spanking predicted for Romney, and the spanking he got, you obviously disregard scientific data at your own risk.
    2. There is no Amnesty in the Bill. There is however a path to citizenship that is quite long, and detailed.
    3. Going back to blaming the 47% (like Romney did) worked like a charm during the election- especially when it was revealled we were including our veterans, and our parents in that number. Really? Those are the "takers"?

The GOP has reduced itself to being one thing- the party of hate.

Obama won't even visit the Texas border to see for himself how bad it is. What does that say? He doesn't care because it doesn't affect him or his and he wants the votes. For all of you that don't care about border security, take a trip to ANY of the border states and check out how easy it is for ANYBODY to cross over and you'll change your mind. Not just illegal mexicans, terroists also. Come check it out.

How do you account for the most arrests, eve;, the most deportations, ever; and the most Border Patrol Agents, ever happening under the Obama Administration? Cleary the border is about as secure as it gets sort of Republican/Halliburton wall, tower, drone boondogle projects- and given what those cost it's no wonder they aren'y going to be deployed. Meanwhile, as a river divides Mexico and Texas- just what do you think would work best there?

"If they wanted valid poll results, they would have given the actual views (without mentioning either party)."

The party affiliation of the views that were described was not specified, not vice versa. Reading comprehension. Get some.

Correction: that was actually later in the poll, but still showed more support for the 4 associated with Dems.

totally meaningless unless the people being polled even understand the question and what both parties positions on. more than half the people in this country are totally clueless, which is hwo the demorcats survive.

it looks like blacks are, as usual, blindly following their democrat plantation masters. if anybody in this country should oppose this, it is black americans. assuming they have a desire for a decent job, the democrats opening up the flood gates on cheap low skill labor coming into the country will drive black unemployement up even higher. it is already twice the national average. the democrats immigration proposals will make it three times the national average. and i'm sure demorcats see that as a good thing as it will foster more government dependence and tighter allegiance to the democrat plantation masters.

I guess it would come as a surprise for you to learn that vast majority of those in this country illegally did not enter by sneaking across the border with Mexico. Nope. They entered legally but have overstayed their authorizations. A perfect example of this would be an expired student visa, or an expired work visa.

    Democrats argument

    Immigration is a racist issue
    Zimmerman/Trayvon is a racist issue

It's literally their all inclusive argument.

Plain, simple republicans are scared because most immigrents register as democrates in voting..Republicans would love an increase in their base but as obstructionists on about any subject from immigration to women's rights republicans seem to be losing ground on everything right!!!

Rudy NYC – What difference does it make HOW they came to be here? Still here illegally? Do you live in one of the border states? Why should we reward law breakers with citizenship? Stop making excuses and demand that both sides, Rupubs and Dems do something about the illegal entry into our sovereign nation. The republicans want more border security before amnesty, what's wrong with that? Seriously...

Job's. Job's. Job's. How many more times can it be written, or stated, or typed. Job's. Job's. Job's. Maybe some of the civil unrest could be eliminated by Job's Job's. Remember Mr. and Mrs. candidate. Your battle cry was Job's Job's.

More fencing and more border patrol agents, whatever it takes. Illegal immigrants aren't the worse thing that could come across the border. I saw a clip about a terroist organization speaking of bringing 4 lbs. of anthrax across the border in a suitcase and bragging about how that could wipe out 330,000 people. The border states are the people whose families are at stake here, let's get real.

Pete – As a woman, I am more concerned about the rights of the unborn...the democrats actually keep the poor down and out with their hand-outs and that is a fact. Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a life time...does that make sense to you?

    ___________
like Republicans actually care about employment and livable wages? Who keeps the lid on raising the Minimum Wage-why, that would be the GOP! Who has continually voted against Equal Pay laws? Why, that would be the GOP!Who has destroyed the unions- the folks who fight for decent wages and working conditions? Why, that would be the GOP! Who for de-funding the Department of Labor, and voiding all of their regulations? Why that would be the GOP! Who has promoted child labor? Why, that would be the GOP!

I could go on and on, but trying to say Immigration reform is bad for workers- because Republicans are of course worried about the middle class is simply silly. The GOP doesn't care about the middle class- remember?

Piranha in the Rio Grande River would go a long way, toward discouraging illegals.
Piranha can strip the flesh off a cow, In 3 minutes flat. What a cheap, and effective way to control
crossings at that point? Along the northern California Coast, we are well within our rights, to patrol
the skies, up to the 3 mile limit, and there again, another deterrant, to "pangas" that might want to drop
illegals off to swim the 3 miles to shore.
We do no "owe" anyone from a foreign Country asylum, and those who are standing in line, for the last
10 years, doing things LEGALLY, should not be pushed to the back of the line, just because others have
jumped in front of them, by breaking our laws. Demand that Congress take a hard look, at the message this folly is sending to other people who want to CONTRIBUTE to the betterment of AMERICA, who want to speak ENGLISH and work hard, instead of sneaking in here, with their hands out for money to send back to their country, or other ILLEGAL activities. Where are the brains of those who are massaging the laws we already have in place, instead of focusing on OUR security, and jobs? Go figure.

Ah, so you were surprised to learn that most illegals enter the country legally and overstay their documents. Glad to help.

If the right wing were actually serious about stopping illegals then they would concern themselves with fixing the problem with people overstaying their documents, too, and not just be single-minded focused on building a fence.

The right wing is very good at looking like they are doing something constructive, when in fact they are not doing anything.
