Liz Cheney launches run for Senate

(CNN) - Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, will challenge three-term Republican Sen. Michael Enzi of Wyoming for his seat in next year's mid-term elections, she announced Tuesday in a web video.

"Today I am launching my candidacy for the United States Senate," she said.

Cheney dedicated part of her nearly six-minute long video to criticizing President Barack Obama, accusing him of announcing a war on Americans' freedoms of religion and speech.

Missing, however, was any personal attacks on her GOP opponent, Enzi.

In her announcement she said it was time for a "new generation of leaders to step up." She then made a call to action, saying, "every victorious movement in history has required the full participation of men and women of courage, conviction and principle...join me in this fight."

Cheney, who chairs a nonprofit on national security and education called Keep America Safe, has been rumored this year to be considering a U.S. Senate bid from Wyoming.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee, however, says it stands firmly behind Enzi, the GOP incumbent.

"Our mission is to re-elect our incumbents and build a Republican majority," NRSC Communications Director Brad Dayspring told CNN.

Cheney sparked some speculation of a potential Senate bid in March when she cautioned her party against moving too far to the middle as the GOP began major rebranding efforts following last year's presidential loss.

"It is time for Republicans to get over their loss in 2012. We are all that stands between this president's policies and a damaged and diminished America," she wrote. "It is time to get back in the fight."

"And I do mean fight," she continued in the Wall Street Journal op-ed. "Republicans are being counseled to move the party to the left, but in my experience, those who advocate more liberal policies for the GOP are wrongheaded or Democrats, or both."

Wyoming is a reliably red state, with a Republican governor, Republican senators and a Republican for its at large representative. Enzi easily won re-election in 2008 with 76% of the vote.

Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney carried the state 69% of the vote in last year's election.

– CNN's Jake Tapper, Paul Steinhauser and Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

Wonderful. Someone who may actually be more of a right-wing nutjob than her father.

The Environment of the Tea Party:

“Everybody over 50, when their children leave college, sell your house”

This will be common sense if the Tea Party gets their way; I will challenge you to a spreadsheet duel if you do not believe me. This is if you can understand that a spreadsheet is facts and figures not ideology?

I am not saying that is good or bad; that is your choice. I am not saying that the Tea Party wants this; I am saying that where the Tea Party is leading the Middle Class to.

Dad was VP but he usurped powers to "act" as President from 2000-2006 until GW woke up and saw who was really running the country. Maybe the daughter can get elected Senator and be the de facto governor of Wyoming. But what do 400,000 head of cattle and 50,000 people care anyway.

Just what we need in the Senate, the wife of Mass Murder "Dickey Boy" Cheney. The guy who deliberately invaded the wrong nation sending 100,000's of thousands of innocent Iraqis to their deaths so Halliburton could make BILLONS. And pleased don't waste my time on how "Dickey Boy" had completely divested himself from Haillburton.

Well another family politician. Can't we find any candidates that aren't part of the establishment or political culture?

She has said outright that she will not do her job. She will oppose the President on every issue no matter what the issue. That is so sad and eventhough she has announced ahead of time that she will not do what is right for the country but will only work on a partisan basis, people will still vote for her.

I hope the people of Wyoming are smart enough NOT to elect another Cheney to office. The rest of the country certainly doesn't want another Cheney.

I don't know much about Liz Cheney, but I certainly hope and hope and hope she's NOTHING like her Dad. In other words, I hope she's not evil, venal, duplicitous, or dishonorable.

Just the type of candidate that is divisive, polarizing and inflexible. Don't we have enough of this type in Congress?

She will not get the nomination, and will fade away and/or create a consultancy with Palin and Bachmann.

Bring Mary Cheney in and you might win some LGBT votes. I am a conservative Gay guy, I support gun rights, religious freedom, and smaller government, but I have to vote with Democrats because voting GOP is like wishing suffering on all LGBT. Throw in some LGBT candidates in states you know you can't win and see what a difference it makes. Empower a conserva-gay movement. Maybe run some Gay guy or a Lesbian in your Presidential primaries and start some dialogue.

In a fair world she'd be visiting her evil father in prison. She should go to the families of the over 4,500 dead service-members and ask for their vote. Surely they'll understand the draft-dodger Dick (in every sense of the word) Cheney dishonestly starting the Iraq War so Haliburton could make some money.
