Obama says refund checks show Obamacare success

Updated 7/18/2013 at 2:35pm

Washington (CNN) –Surrounded by middle-class Americans, President Barack Obama touted the successes of his signature health care law on Thursday and the ways consumers are seeing tangible benefits.

“Because of the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies have to spend at least 80% of every dollar that you pay in premiums on your health care; not on overhead, not on profits, but on you,” the president said during an event Thursday in the White House East Room.

The president highlighted a provision in the law called the medical loss ratio policy that forces health care providers to refund money to consumers like Chicago resident Dan Hart, a father of two who got a check in the mail for $136.

“As any parent will tell you, those kids, they suck up a lot of money,” the president joked. “So he used his rebate to pay some bills.”

According to the White House, 8.5 million people got an average of a $100 in rebates last year.

The president chided House Republicans for trying to repeal the health care law nearly 40 times even though there are other big issues on the table, like immigration reform, to address.

“We’re refighting these old battles," he said. "Sometimes I just try to figure out why. Maybe they think it’s good politics.”

But Republicans argue the problem is bad math.

“The picture that the president paints of his health care law looks nothing like the reality facing struggling American families,” House Speaker John Boehner said in a statement.

Boehner and other Republicans have come to refer to Obamacare as a “train wreck.”

Obama acknowledged the persistent political hurdles.

“I recognize that there are still a lot of folks - in this town, at least - who are rooting for this law to fail,” the president said,“If the folks who have been trying to make political hay out of this thing, if they had some better ideas, I've already told them I'm happy to hear them. But I haven't heard any so far.”

I was a group insurance underwriter for 8 years, the guy who projects future claims and sets premium rates to pay for them-I know how this works. And Obamacare is doing exactly what was intended. I said at the beginning, the complainers are idiots, and someday when they understand it they will be glad this was done.

Perfect? No. It is not single payer, a simple expansion of Medicare. Morons would NEVER let THAT happen. But thank God for Obama, we got this much going forward.

Healthcare insurers have looked for every excuse to raise premiums, deductibles, and profits before the law fully kicks in, which is exactly what they predicted that they would do. My son's deductible has jumped from $15 per visit to $250 annually for all visits. In other words, he must pay the first $250 of his annual health costs. Not a good incentive to get that annual checkup, is it?

Two birds... one stone! Implements 'affordable' healthcare (that no one can afford) and doubles employment!
How did Obama double employment, you ask? Since companies will be moving to part-time employment models to avoid ObamaCare penalties, people will have to be looking for a second job.
As a bonus, if the criminal immigration amnesty bill is passed, former criminal immigrants are exempt from the Obamacare mandate to have health insurance and can be hired by small businesses without ObamaCare penalties.
    Win! Win! Win!!!!

i really dont foucus that much about the good things that obamacare is providing such as: folks will not lose everything because they get sick, big insurance companies cannot drop you because of having a sickness before, big corporation have to spend a huge amount of what they take in from the customers toward their customers health, over 30 million folks getting healthcare, and so on so forth.
i am looking that my family came out of the great recession with jobs from obamacare, they are hiring folks because of the jobs they've got, obamacare is getting over 30 million members, which will need tens of millions of folks to help take care of them; and these workers will need other stuff so they will support the hiring of millions of more folks. the repus mission of killing this law, is because they see something exploding into the right direction, which they weren't a part of, and this will kill their obstructionist party.

" insurance companies have to spend at least 80% of every dollar that you pay in premiums on your health care; not on overhead, not on profits, but on you"

When will Americans realise that having insurance companies provide health care is just plain wrong – this shouldn't be about profits. It is truly baffling that an advanced nation such as the USA cannot bring itself to provide universal health care for its citizens.

Obamacare is an economic stranglehold on the American free enterprise system. Those of you who think it's about healthcare are seriously misinformed – or more likely – have been manipulated and brainwashed.
