Cruz says Obama going after guns with ‘stand your ground’ remark

(CNN) – President Barack Obama’s suggestion that state “Stand your Ground” laws should be examined after the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin could amount to an assault on the right of Americans to own guns, Sen. Ted Cruz said in Iowa Friday.

Speaking after addressing a Republican group, Cruz told reporters he hadn’t yet watched Obama’s remarks. But when asked to respond to Obama’s call for a review of laws in individual states, Cruz responded by saying the president was trampling on constitutionally guaranteed rights.

“It is not surprising that the president uses, it seems, every opportunity that he can to go after our Second Amendment right to bear arms,” the Texas Republican said. “This president and this administration has a consistent disregard for the Bill of Rights.”

For example, Cruz said the Obama administration was violating free speech guarantees by “restricting the rights of our servicemen and women to share their faith and not be gagged,” and that the use of drones raised other constitutional questions.

Obama on Friday made his first public comments about the acquittal of George Zimmerman last week in Martin’s shooting death in 2012.

In his speech, Obama called for reconsideration of “Stand your Ground” self-defense laws in Florida and other states.

“I think it would be useful for us to examine some state and local laws to see if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of altercations and confrontations and tragedies that we saw in the Florida case, rather than diffuse potential altercations,” Obama said.

How in the world does this fool equate a law that allows anyone to kill anyone else on the grounds that they "felt threatened" with removal of every American's second amendment rights? The right to own a gun does not and should not allow you to blow away a stranger on the street just because you feel they're up to no good. Deadly force is only justified in cases of imminent and immediate mortal danger, PERIOD.

Definitely a 2nd amendment issue. What's the point of having a gun if you can't shoot people with it?

Guns endanger more than they protect. We need to repeal the 2nd amendment.

Cruz is a self-serving egotistical liar who would say anything and support any position that he thinks would advance his political aspirations.

Cruz "hadn't yet watched Obama's remarks", yet he's ready to pontificate.

Mr.Cruz.....When you get to be president ...you can rant on all you like about the right to own guns.....a right which is proving to be deadly more than any thing else....You can make a lot of noise but until you care about the people of this nation ...please just shut up!!!!!.......... the president is absolutely right that a number of these RIGHTS need to be reevaluated and if the people have the chance...we will do something about it!!!!!!!I In the meantime YOU can get lost!!!

Obviously, Cruz hadn't watched or heard or read President Obama's remarks. If he had listened with an open mind, he would have recognized the heartfelt, non-political views of a man who speaks from experience as a black man in America, and he would have at least abstained from making any derogatory comment about the president's speech, for fear of making an idiot of himself. But being a republican with a blindfold agenda, he just couldn't help himself...

As far as I know Sentor Cruz represents Texas but I read the news that he is either in Iowa or New Hampshire. Why does not he represent them rather than Texas.

    Ted Cruz is a toolbox.

Obama is right. Whatever your opinion of Stand Your Ground laws, I think you have to agree that it is important to make sure that they don't make it too easy to create a situation where the defense can be used.

Nobody is coming for your guns. Think about it. If a knock comes to your door and someone on the other side demands your firearms, what are going to do? Exactly!...and they know that.

So it's unreasonable to ask for the review of a law that suggest that you can "stand your ground" if you feel imminently threatened, even if that "reasonable threat" of danger is from racially profiling a person as a threat? Obama is not perfect, but that law is flawed and should be REVIEWED. No one said eliminate it, but a review with a few tweaks could be helpful.
