Cruz says Obama going after guns with ‘stand your ground’ remark

(CNN) – President Barack Obama’s suggestion that state “Stand your Ground” laws should be examined after the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin could amount to an assault on the right of Americans to own guns, Sen. Ted Cruz said in Iowa Friday.

Speaking after addressing a Republican group, Cruz told reporters he hadn’t yet watched Obama’s remarks. But when asked to respond to Obama’s call for a review of laws in individual states, Cruz responded by saying the president was trampling on constitutionally guaranteed rights.

“It is not surprising that the president uses, it seems, every opportunity that he can to go after our Second Amendment right to bear arms,” the Texas Republican said. “This president and this administration has a consistent disregard for the Bill of Rights.”

For example, Cruz said the Obama administration was violating free speech guarantees by “restricting the rights of our servicemen and women to share their faith and not be gagged,” and that the use of drones raised other constitutional questions.

Obama on Friday made his first public comments about the acquittal of George Zimmerman last week in Martin’s shooting death in 2012.

In his speech, Obama called for reconsideration of “Stand your Ground” self-defense laws in Florida and other states.

“I think it would be useful for us to examine some state and local laws to see if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of altercations and confrontations and tragedies that we saw in the Florida case, rather than diffuse potential altercations,” Obama said.

not sure he is going after guns. i think he is going after wanna-be-cops who want to shoot people that look at them funny. should it be a race thing? no. it is an issue that pits thinking people against those who believe they are gunslingers in the wild west.

Talk about a whiner with his panties in a wad! Republicans have zero cred on most topics because they immediately bray lunatic responses to sensible questions.

I'm a gun owner who has questions about some gun laws. That doesn't make me at all sympathetic to Sen. Crybaby Cruz.

It's not your consitutional right to shoot people when you have the ability to walk away. I'm so tired of seeing this guy commenting on anything. All he does is complain.

Isn't if funny that the senator only heard the part of the speech that referred to stand your ground laws. I didn't hear anything in his comments about taking away second amendment rights. The president mentioned many other things in his comments that are relevant to the state of race relations in this country. This tells me that the far right is only interested in bashing this president at every opportunity. I don't agree with the president on everything, but by God, do they have to do this ALL the time. His comments were relevant to me and millions of others in this country. I live in Texas and I'm so ashamed of the people who claim to represent us on the national and state level. I'm a 63-year old African American woman with a son whose almost 40 years old, has a family, a business, church-going, and any mother's dream, and I still tell him every time he leaves me to be careful. He knows what that means because I always have this fear in the back of my mind that something like what happens to lots of black men in our city (Houston). Racial profiling still happens and has happened to him because he happens to live in a predominantly white suburb. Perhaps some of our elected officials should take my mother's advice that if you can't say something nice, don't say anything.

Obama is right to examine the Stand Your Ground law...it should be amended. As long as people are legally able to carry guns in the general public as vigilantes, shoot unarmed kids and get away with it; it is a license to kill. Stand Your Ground should be restricted to your home in absolute defense only.

The right to bear arms is linked to the need for a well regulated militia. The gun lobby, namely gun manufacturers, want every citizen to have multiple guns and use all of their ammunition for profit. States do have a well regulated militia, it is called the National Guard. If you want to be part of the militia join the Guard and truly be patriotic. The gun lobby with spokesmen like Cruz cater to fear, paranoia, innuendo and namecalling to push their agenda. Thankfully, the vast majority of people in this country are not fearful and have common sense. Wait until a black man stands his ground and see how he is supported by a stand your ground law.

One guy git it wrong. Al Capone was a bad guy, but he provided soup kitchens to the poor and booze to those who wanted it. What good had cruz ever done? Love those who want Obama impeached for offering his thoughts. But they loved his predecessor whose lies got 4,400 American troops killed for phony WMDs. Righties are such a joke.

Just like Cruz, it's clear that none of the ignorant, racist right-wing filth that are leaving comments listened to what the President said.

The State of Texas must be in a hopeless state of disarray if this is the only level of intelligence they can produce. Talk about a state whose motto must currently be "Push to be on the bottom." This guy is not exactly brain trust material.

Scott says, "The second amendment doesn't say anything at all about your right to shoot guns."

I shook my head and laughed. That has got to be the most ridiculous statement on the second amendment out there. That is the same as saying, "You have the right to bear arms, but bullets and triggers are illegal".

I wish the repugs would at least find something real to blast Obama about. sick of reading all their lies about him and the Democrats. the Democratic Party platform explicitly supports the Second Amendment and isn't looking to take anyone's guns away. we on the sane side of the political spectrum just don't believe that criminals and crazies should be able to walk into any gun show and walk out with a deadly weapon. amazing how God's Own Party can't do anything but hate and lie about this good man who's doing good for this country.

We need a division of labor here. Obama will restrict himself to killing world class terrorists on a routine basis and right-wingers can concentrate on shooting unarmed teenagers and bragging about it.
