Cruz says Obama going after guns with ‘stand your ground’ remark

(CNN) – President Barack Obama’s suggestion that state “Stand your Ground” laws should be examined after the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin could amount to an assault on the right of Americans to own guns, Sen. Ted Cruz said in Iowa Friday.

Speaking after addressing a Republican group, Cruz told reporters he hadn’t yet watched Obama’s remarks. But when asked to respond to Obama’s call for a review of laws in individual states, Cruz responded by saying the president was trampling on constitutionally guaranteed rights.

“It is not surprising that the president uses, it seems, every opportunity that he can to go after our Second Amendment right to bear arms,” the Texas Republican said. “This president and this administration has a consistent disregard for the Bill of Rights.”

For example, Cruz said the Obama administration was violating free speech guarantees by “restricting the rights of our servicemen and women to share their faith and not be gagged,” and that the use of drones raised other constitutional questions.

Obama on Friday made his first public comments about the acquittal of George Zimmerman last week in Martin’s shooting death in 2012.

In his speech, Obama called for reconsideration of “Stand your Ground” self-defense laws in Florida and other states.

“I think it would be useful for us to examine some state and local laws to see if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of altercations and confrontations and tragedies that we saw in the Florida case, rather than diffuse potential altercations,” Obama said.

Mr. Obama was spot on with his remarks. After all, what if Trayvon Martin had had a legally owned gun and decided to stand HIS ground? The old Mexican stand your ground off?
America has to free itself from the control of the gun nuts, the real killers. Until that time the bloodbath will continue.

Cruz ought to be ashamed. What a thing to say about one of the most important topics any president has discussed in decades. Or, better yet, Cruz should go back to Canada; We don't need his kind in the USA!

You think minority prison populations are high now, watch them skyrocket if stand-your-ground were ever repealed. And many of those found guilty and incarcerated would be guilty of nothing but not wanting to get shot in the back during the required legal analysis and retreat.

Repeal stand-your-ground and watch more minorities end up standing in prison.

Yall who think guns are ok , aren't living the life of Trayvon and other young Black boys who are sterotyped, stalked and killed because someone used a gun against them ,FOR NO REASON!! That's why our President uses every opportunity to enact new gun laws. Too many kids of all races are being senselessly killed!! And Republicans are racists and prejudiced against all minorities and poor people, that is evident!!

Ted Cruz is the worst senator EVER!!!! He is so full of himself and thinks he is more important than what he is....a smock!!! Their is not one debate in the senate that he does not oppose. I feel he thinks he is the best thing since slice bread. He is a Loser and will not go very far. Several senators have already put him in his place, but he is a slow learner. I can't wait to see him gone from WDC and we don't hear anything else about him.

One of the writers says that Obama put race into this situation.......HOW IN THE WORLD CAN YOU KEEP IT OUT????The things that Zimmerman was recorded as saying were more "racist' than anything that's been heard during this case!!!!.......Sometimes it seems that people will rant on about something that they only picked up a few words of and don't bother to read and find out the whole story...This is another..example of this minimal thinking.....

    TED:
The name you call a man when you don't know his name, nor do you have any interest in getting to know his actual name.
Can be used for a casual acquaintance, a hookup, one night stand, or even an uninteresting guy buying you a drink.
You: "Hi my name is Brian."
Me: "Nice to meet you, Ted."

Or in the ladies bathroom –
Me: I'm talking to a Ted out there. I need someone to save me.

with right to carry concealed weapons and stand your groung laws we are headed back to wild west days.the idea of doing away with stand your ground rulesin no way infringes on right to own guns. as far as Cruz, GohmertAnd, Bachman, Rand Paul, These people speak just to hear their own voices. Problem is neither of them have any thing intelligent to say

Anyone saying this goober is correct, and harping on Obama for "stripping away our freedoms" is a moron. The Stand Your Ground law isn't even in all states. Pretty much all it is, is an additional law dealing with self defense. It has nothing to do with whether or not you can own, carry, or use a gun. It gives individuals the right to use reasonable force to defend themselves without any requirement to evade or retreat from a dangerous situation. That means, you could use a baseball bat, a gun, a knife, your fists. It allows you to use deadly force, that doesn't mean the only option is with guns.

Also, since when is asking for taking a closer look at the law stripping away a right? Stop being delusional and paranoid.
