Cruz says Obama going after guns with ‘stand your ground’ remark

(CNN) – President Barack Obama’s suggestion that state “Stand your Ground” laws should be examined after the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin could amount to an assault on the right of Americans to own guns, Sen. Ted Cruz said in Iowa Friday.

Speaking after addressing a Republican group, Cruz told reporters he hadn’t yet watched Obama’s remarks. But when asked to respond to Obama’s call for a review of laws in individual states, Cruz responded by saying the president was trampling on constitutionally guaranteed rights.

“It is not surprising that the president uses, it seems, every opportunity that he can to go after our Second Amendment right to bear arms,” the Texas Republican said. “This president and this administration has a consistent disregard for the Bill of Rights.”

For example, Cruz said the Obama administration was violating free speech guarantees by “restricting the rights of our servicemen and women to share their faith and not be gagged,” and that the use of drones raised other constitutional questions.

Obama on Friday made his first public comments about the acquittal of George Zimmerman last week in Martin’s shooting death in 2012.

In his speech, Obama called for reconsideration of “Stand your Ground” self-defense laws in Florida and other states.

“I think it would be useful for us to examine some state and local laws to see if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of altercations and confrontations and tragedies that we saw in the Florida case, rather than diffuse potential altercations,” Obama said.

“It is not surprising that the president uses, it seems, every opportunity that he can to go after our Second Amendment right to bear arms,” the Texas Republican said." It's not surprising that a Republican goes after the president for expressing his first amendment right of free speech. Republicans. Reactionaries.

It is truly amazing that anyone takes the Republican party seriously at all.

Just the kind of stupid comment one could expect from someone like Ted Cruz. People like him and the majority of the republican party are the reason we haven't made a much progress as we should have made. President Obama is the right person to make the speech he did. A man who has walked in the shoes of many young black men. I look back at the adversity he has traveled through in his life, to make it to become the President of the United States. I appreciate his gentleness and understanding of the problems of all people no matter their race. He can look at both sides black and white, because he comes from both races – Which makes him the better man for the job he is in, as President of all the citizens of the United States. People like Cruz are of no value to the majority of us.

So let me get this straight. Crazy Cruz hadn't yet heard or read the remarks he was being asked about but he was condemning the President for violating someone's second amendment rights. That in the tea party is what is known as an informed opinion.

It is more than obvious that people are taking advantage of "stand your ground" laws and therefore the laws should be examined. If a man can claim this defense after he shoots 8 times into a car that was playing loud music, then the law is obviously flawed.

This has nothing to do with 2nd Amendment rights, as Cruz suggests. It has everything to do with the right not to be shot by some overzealous jerk. Guns should be used for hunting and for defense, not as an excuse to kill.

Good. I am currently studying abroad in a country where they dont own guns and yet somehow they enjoy all of our freedoms and more, on top of being able to LIVE freely. Being able to hunt is nice, but owning your own set of weapons for show and because you are Mrrrican is counter productive when 90 percent of the people who do so arent even taught how to properly respect the weapon.

He hasn't watched the remarks, but he is attacking them. That comes across as a really reasoned comment, Senator. And some people talk about this guy as a possible presidential candidate? It does appear to be typical of him given his circus antics in the Senate.

Cruz you make a comment about the speak BEFORE you hear or read it. Yea that is what is wrong with the Tea Party. Make comments about a subject that know nothing about.

He's right! The 2nd Amendment did not exist until Florida past the first Stand Your Ground law in 2005.

Ted Cruz is such an idiot. All he does since he got elected by the fools in Texas is to find fault with anything the President says or does. He has nothing positive to offer on the issues that he is so critical of. Blathering fool.

How can Sen. Ted Cruz justify coming to a verdict about what Obama said before even knowing what he said !!! Dang.. Is this how he casts his votes in the senate too?

Cruz will keep making up this b.s. about Obama taking everyone's guns, even though it isn't true. And (SURPRISE) he'll keep getting re-elected for it. Make the President the bad guy. Yeah that's it. And get re-elected too! Woo hoo!

I personally don't think he is trying to take away rights to bear arms senator. He is just saying to review it to make sure it is in the best interest of all citizens. He just wants it to be right and fair for all people sir.

Republicans seem to have a mental deficiency in the area of empathy. Obama's words gave voice and validation to how a large number of Americans feel. The only thought that occurs to this mental midget cruz is, "he's coming for your guns!"

Hey, Moron! We know you want to re-fight the Civil War, but there's NO NEED for the guns. As soon as you declare your secession, WE'LL LET YOU GO! Seriously, we need to save the money all you "red ink states" cost us, and that's not to mention how much you embarrass us in front of the rest of the First World.

ignorance is bliss, right? for some, any remark about or against violence or state laws must be an attempt to take away guns. beyond any credibility.
