(CNN) – President Barack Obama’s suggestion that state “Stand your Ground” laws should be examined after the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin could amount to an assault on the right of Americans to own guns, Sen. Ted Cruz said in Iowa Friday.
Speaking after addressing a Republican group, Cruz told reporters he hadn’t yet watched Obama’s remarks. But when asked to respond to Obama’s call for a review of laws in individual states, Cruz responded by saying the president was trampling on constitutionally guaranteed rights.
“It is not surprising that the president uses, it seems, every opportunity that he can to go after our Second Amendment right to bear arms,” the Texas Republican said. “This president and this administration has a consistent disregard for the Bill of Rights.”
For example, Cruz said the Obama administration was violating free speech guarantees by “restricting the rights of our servicemen and women to share their faith and not be gagged,” and that the use of drones raised other constitutional questions.
Obama on Friday made his first public comments about the acquittal of George Zimmerman last week in Martin’s shooting death in 2012.
In his speech, Obama called for reconsideration of “Stand your Ground” self-defense laws in Florida and other states.
“I think it would be useful for us to examine some state and local laws to see if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of altercations and confrontations and tragedies that we saw in the Florida case, rather than diffuse potential altercations,” Obama said.
This ignorant piece of work if, sadly, from my home state. He's a Canadian/Cuban loud mouth.
All the gun nuts care about is their toys. Doesn't' matter who gets killed or how much crime there is.
Typical GOP leader. Offer no options, just try make the other guy look bad. Nothing changes with them, how can they be creative as a gov't if they can't offer solutions or alternatives?
Senator Cruz thank you for your typical Republican knee jerk reaction without even hearing the comment..
Does Cruz understand logic? The lawful possession of arms is a distinct issue from their lawful use. SYG is about use, not the possession of firearms.
Typical response...from one who pre judges............. He does not have the facts but he has a pre judgmental opinion.
Cruz is an opportunist with ambitions. He didn't even hear the comments but commented anyway. LOSER who is WRONG for America!!!
Why is it that no matter what a politician says about anything, there's a Texan who hears it as "WE'RE FIXIN' TO TAKE YOUR GUNS"?
President Obama is right. The stand your ground laws need to be revisited. They should prevent crime, not encourage law enforcement wannabe's to take the law into their own hands. I believe in the 2nd Amendment as well, but more and more I'm coming to believe that there are second Amendment advocates who are simply extremists one step removed from paranoid survivalists.
It's hardly an assult on American owning guns. Americans can own guns, they just maybe shouldn't be allowed to sheild their use behind stand your ground laws. You use a gun, you accept the responsibility.
I'm not carrying water for Obama, but Cruz is an idiot. Nothing Obama said could be construed as an attack on the right to own guns. He is whipping up the right wing fringe because he thinks it can help him to be the next Republican presidential nominee.
He's not "going after guns". He's asking the legitimate question about allowing such cavalier rules about the potentially lethal use of guns when it may not be necessary.
Typical GOP: shoot first, ask questions later.
Typical Cruz: shoot of your mouth first, read what Obama said later.
There's nothing in the 2nd amendment about self-defense. That's about appropriate use of firearms, not carrying them. Otherwise, murder would be legal. Utter idiocy, Cruz.
If our right to own guns is taken away from us, then only the police and the military will have guns. Think about it.
“It is not surprising that the president uses, it seems, every opportunity that he can to go after our Second Amendment right to bear arms..."
And it's not surprising a Republican would use every opportunity he can to slam the man, simply because he's a Democrat. Pull you head from you-know-where, and let something escape your mouths that isn't based solely on politics, as the president did.
This is the most divisive and ridiculous republican who ever was voted into office. You have to wonder what the people are like who voted for hi, Disgusting man, but then he is a republican.
This dude is an idiot. Obama did not say repeal or do away with the second amendment. However, if this stupid stand your ground law is allowing murderers to walk away Scot free, then like he said, it needs to be re evaluated.
Boy this lowly GOPer takes every oppertunity to blame President Obama about something off base. These tea party republicans are crazy, just plain crazy. First of all he didn't say anything about guns but about white people who take it apon theie selves to go after people of color. Cruze probably won't take his words back for being wrong. Had it been the other way around, it would be another story.
Sen. Cruz missed the entire point of the President's speech. People like the senator are at the heart of the problem that he chooses to ignore. Shame!
Cruz needs to replace his tin foil hat, the effect is wearing out on the old one. BTW, the president, under the First Amendment (the one before the one that allows you to shove that gun in your belt), gives the president the right to talk on any subject, subject to very few exceptions. Cruz needs to watch his step because a lot of his words could be considered the same as hollaring "fire" in a croded movie theater. He is a senator, he should start to act like one and not like a first year Tea Party House member (That isn't a compliment)..
Ted Cruz is a poor excuse for a public servant.
Cruz comments before he even listens to our President, how typical.
Gee what a surprise, hasn't heard the remarks but automatically trashes the president. No wonder even his own party can;t stand him.
Thank God he is from the State of Texas. We have enough of those kind of idiots in Kentucky.
I am really surprised of irresponsible remarks from obama, obviously he does not care now that he is in second term, and his real self is showing,,
