Cruz says Obama going after guns with ‘stand your ground’ remark

(CNN) – President Barack Obama’s suggestion that state “Stand your Ground” laws should be examined after the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin could amount to an assault on the right of Americans to own guns, Sen. Ted Cruz said in Iowa Friday.

Speaking after addressing a Republican group, Cruz told reporters he hadn’t yet watched Obama’s remarks. But when asked to respond to Obama’s call for a review of laws in individual states, Cruz responded by saying the president was trampling on constitutionally guaranteed rights.

“It is not surprising that the president uses, it seems, every opportunity that he can to go after our Second Amendment right to bear arms,” the Texas Republican said. “This president and this administration has a consistent disregard for the Bill of Rights.”

For example, Cruz said the Obama administration was violating free speech guarantees by “restricting the rights of our servicemen and women to share their faith and not be gagged,” and that the use of drones raised other constitutional questions.

Obama on Friday made his first public comments about the acquittal of George Zimmerman last week in Martin’s shooting death in 2012.

In his speech, Obama called for reconsideration of “Stand your Ground” self-defense laws in Florida and other states.

“I think it would be useful for us to examine some state and local laws to see if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of altercations and confrontations and tragedies that we saw in the Florida case, rather than diffuse potential altercations,” Obama said.

He did not even listen to the speech and he is ranting. He is the one using Trayvon's death for his soap box and it is repugnant. Obama is trying to sow understanding between people, so that we can see one another, sympathize with one another, be one people helping one another – so we can end this kind of senseless violence. And all these types of republicans do is scream about their gun rights – which apparently they hold more dearly than the lives of children.

I think making a comment on a comment you did not hear is uhh... what's the term? Oh, yeah – STUPID. Is this how all politicians work? I am referring to Dems and Reps. I think sometimes they all are crazy.

Cruz is an idiot. How can you comment about something whenever you haven't even heard the statements. Typical of this guy.

All said before he'd heard or read the remarks he was reviling. Typical partisan behavior that merely results in the discredit of anything he said thereafter.

If he hadn't reviewed Obama's remarks, how can he comment on them without understanding the context? Do all Republicans have "canned" responses prepared for every situation?

Now this is an idiot to have not heard the President's speech, but make an assumption that he used this opportunity to "...go after our second amendment right to bear arms." The President's speech had nothing to do with second amendment rights Senator. Why don't you listen or read before sticking your foot in your mouth.

What is wrong with this Cruz guy? Please someone, anyone give him a good whack upside his head! These guys are just trying to keep relevant in the political arena, knowing their just dividing this country.

Obama's comment meant that if two people have a right to be in the same spot but they each innocently think the other is up to no good, they BOTH have a right to stand their ground AND THAT'S where the confusion comes in, This needs fixing, PERIOD!

Is this clown for real? He obviously has a problem with comprehension. His grandstanding has absolutely nothing related to what Obama said. A disgrace to the Senate and there are GOP Senators who agree.

Just when you think the infantile pro-gun nutcases can't get any stupider, comes this remark from this hack senator. I think they are so ultra-sensitive about guns, is that they know they are dead wrong and the Second Amendment has little to do with the types of guns out there today. No one group can be so dumb if they were not so wrong.

No he is not, you fool. Why are gun owners so paranoid? I beginning to think that the NRA, aided by misrepresenting the 2nd Amendment, are hell bent on arming every man, woman and child in this country until we live in a military state. I think I'm going to stop shaking my head at foreign countries that have bombings and shooting daily by opposing factions. I am beginning to see how it happens, and no I am NOT anti-gun. Seriously people, get a freaking grip!

This case has gotten out of hand and now our own President decides that he should spend his valuable time trying to make reference that he could have been the kid!! Mr. President, all due respect, get a damn grip. You are the leader of the free world, act like it! This country is in so much trouble financially and you feel starting a civil war is the answer? The case went to court and was decided on by the way the justice system allows. You should be saying "this is a terrible situation and now we have to move on." It isn't a racial thing, it is a criminal thing. The damn kid was beating up the guy, stop trying to make this about race!

He never mention anything about the right to bare arms, if u wanted to attack president obama's remarks, you should've attacked with an argument that included the federal government trampling states rights to function. These republican officials are pretty incompetent and ignorant

This isn't a shocker, but Cruz completely missed what this moment was about. Cruz is so steeped in the DC political theater that he didn't even recognize a genuine moment of huge historic import. I'm sure this is just the sort of comment certain far right circles want to hear, but it's so divorced from reality that I think we'd have to call it an annulment of reality.
