Rand Paul aide known as 'Southern Avenger' steps down

(CNN) - An aide to Sen. Rand Paul who had taken heat recently for his past as a pro-Southern secessionist has resigned his position as the senator's new media director.

Moira Bagley, Paul's spokesperson, confirmed Monday that Jack Hunter had submitted his resignation and the senator has accepted it.

Hunter, who once used the persona "Southern Avenger" while hosting a radio show, will resume his career as a political pundit, according to the Daily Caller.

"I've long been a conservative, and years ago, a much more politically incorrect (and campy) one," Hunter said in an email to the conservative news outlet. "But there's a significant difference between being politically incorrect and racist. I've also become far more libertarian over the years, a philosophy that encourages a more tolerant worldview, through the lens of which I now look back on some of my older comments with embarrassment."

Hunter had made a number of provocative comments about race and was also a member of the pro-Southern independence group League of the South before he started working for Paul.

Hunter had previously written articles praising John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Abraham Lincoln, and acknowledged that he toasts Booth's birthday annually.

The character "Southern Avenger," which Hunter described on his website as an "anonymous super hero/ pro-wrestler persona," wears a mask printed with the Confederate flag. The website is temporarily offline.

Paul, who is considering a bid for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, has spent much of his trips to early voting states this year encouraging a more welcoming attitude among Republicans. The Kentucky Republican told a crowd of New Hampshire GOP activists the party needs to "grow bigger."

"If you want to be the party of white people, we're winning all the white votes. We're a diverse nation. We're going to win when we look like America," he said in May.

Hunter should have stayed. Everyone knows RP's views on segregation and his approval of discriminatory practices. This does nothing to change Paul's image whatsoever nor does it change his comments on how he views civil rights. If this was meant to send a "warming" message to minorities, he failed miserably.

The story shouldn't be that this so called "Southern Avenger" has stepped down from Rand Paul's campaign. The story should be WHY Rand Paul added him to his staff to begin with ... let alone as a "media director".

Rand put him on the team with a wink and a nod to his so called "base" of hard right Southern white "bubba" types. After taking some heat and being exposed to the light of day on this, Rand is now "accepting" his resignation. This will hurt him with the bubba voters, and shows a serious lack of spine on his part. If that's the sort of thing he really believes, then he should just stand up and say so.........like a man. He is a weasel, and with every passing day it shows more and more.

Seriously? Can we get this in writing? If they did, I and many others would move there in a second to get away from the far left and their nutty big government agenda. BTW, lots of ports in the south. How are the rest of you gonna get your shipped goods and oil? Through the south of course, once a hefty tax has been added on. But you lefties love taxes so enjoy!

Here's how that works: red southern states secede and essentially become North Mexico because of their inability to manage themselves or have a thriving economy and their utter dependence on the federal aid provided by blue states. Then, people start flocking north and we have to build a border fence for $3B and put 42,000 border patrol agents across our southern border with North Mexico.

@Sniffit.........I can see that becoming a reality one day........I don't think most people in the South realize how much they really depend on that "big government" that they hate so much.

Her's how it works. Blue states pay 2-3 times what they pay now for food and energy. Good luck keeping law and order in those large government subsidized urban cesspools when the food riots start. Too bad the law abiding citizens won't have guns to protect themselves from the criminals. I'd advise you to pray, but you lefties don't believe in God either, just the government.

    Boy, have we regressed.

Wannabe Bull Connors working for US Senators ... Conservative heads exploding when the President makes reflective remarks about a black teenager's death ...

Somehow, racially angry discourse has become acceptable again. I suspect it's because, amazingly enough, the civil-rights era is starting to slip from living memory. (Just ask John Roberts.). 40, 50 years is a long time.

I know many lefties do not believe in your God. It may surprise you if you venture outside your small walls that there are many religions in the world. And this country is one with Freedom of Religion, not a my-religion-only club.

Food riots? Now that's a fantasy. I wonder how a newly independent South would survive without a central government. Oh,oh, that's right. There would be a central corporation running everything and everybody. No laws, rules or regulations. Just business and every man for himself. You're welcome to life on the open range, my friend.

No problem. There are plenty of other racist, tea party brown-nosing, libertarian pundits out there ready and willing to fill the void in Rand's "let's pretend that I'm a viable candidate" staff.

Oh, yeah, he knew the extreme actions of this antipatriot. Worships John Wilkes Booth. Like worshiping Hitler on his birthday. Oh, Jeez, maybe this guy is still active in the GA K K K since he seems to fit the criteria for Head Dragon.

Amazing that real people can admit that they have a thing for Booth. And then people are OK wiht it.

"Her's how it works. Blue states pay 2-3 times what they pay now for food and energy"

LOL. The only way there would be "food riots"...and it would be country wide if it ever took place....would be because farms fail without their federal subsidization, not because spiteful farmers in North Mexico refuse to sell to "them thar northerners" in order to "stick it to 'em." The northerners, after all, are going to be the ones who can afford that food and the farmers want to make a profit. So, northern folk would pay slightly higher food prices instead of paying higher taxes to subsidize all the red states. Instead of getting subsidies, farmers would get slightly higher prices...instead of paying higher taxes to make up for the failed economics in red states, blue state residents would pay less in taxes. North Mexico would then start trying to enact laws to keep the food within North Mexico's borders, because their undereducated, unemployed/underemployed, minimum wage slave labor populaces, who of course are not allowed to unionize to defend their labor rights, all living in failed local economies...they can't compete for the food in terms of price, so guess who the farmers sell it to.

As for "urban cesspools," we know exactly what conservatives mean nowadays when they use the word "urban." You're fooling nobody. And BTW, you're statistically more likely to suffer a gun accident or gun violence in states with looser gun laws, like Louisiana and Missouri, than places with the stricter ones. Just because the MSM and Hollywood draw all attention on inner cities and make it look like it's the only place violence is happening, and just because the raw numbers are larger when the population in a locality is larger, doesn't mean the RATE is higher. You're in more danger where the RATE is higher. The numbers don't lie.
