Bush 41, security detail, shave heads to show solidarity with young cancer patient

(CNN) – Last week, former President George H. W. Bush had a full head of hair when he gave President Barack Obama a pair of socks. Today, it's gone, shaved to the scalp in solidarity with a young cancer patient.

According to a statement from a spokesman for the 41st president, Bush shaved his head after members of his Secret Service detail shaved theirs, meant to show solidarity with Patrick, the two year-old son of one of the detail who is battling leukemia.

Members of the security detail have already created a website meant to raise money to pay for Patrick's treatment. His last name is being withheld along with that of his father Jon.

At 89, Bush shaved his head this week after making a donation to Patrick's leukemia treatment. Bush and his wife Barbara lost their second child, Robin, to the disease six decades ago at the age of four.

According to the release, the security detail is also organizing a motorcycle benefit run next month that will ride through the Maine countryside and host a lunch and silent auction to raise money for Patrick's treatment.

I did not at all like the older Bush during his terms during the Reagan administration and his own administration. But since since he has showed his true colors as a humanitarian...his son, GWB, will never ever come close to his father's legacy.

Good for you George! Best wishes and intense good thoughts for the little one. This storyastory's highlights how even parents with ten best insurance still can be financially ruined when dealing with a catastrophic illness.

This has got to be the dumbest thing that I have ever seen from the Secret Service. If anyone ever wanted to know who they are, well guess what, there they are.......

hope it helps. health care sucks so bad in this now that its hard to get help for a sore throat anymore. if you don't fit their computer system, they just drop you out of the system. doesn't matter if you are sick...not according to their computer.

A family can have "good" health insurance and be nickeled and dimed to death with co-pays, travel expenses, lost wages due to missing work hours, etc. Obamacare does absolutely NOTHING for those who already have insurance benefits. Our premiums just keep going up, up, up! God bless those willing to help others in their time of need.

VERY COOL of former President Bush.

My sister died of leukemia at 26, so I have great sympathy for any family having to deal with it. God Bless President Bush for showing solidarity with them, since he knows what if feel like to have a family member die from it too.

I tell you, the elder Bush has gotten classier with age. Like a fine wine. I never liked him as President, but you hear these stories from time to time about the classy things he does (embracing Bill Clinton almost as a son being one of them). Good for him and God bless the little boy!

I don't much like the man, but this was a very sweet thing to do. The principal at our school (along with several students) did this in solidarity with one of our own who is battling cancer.

@Natrldiver: "GB was always a stand up kind of guy. "

I thought so until he caved to Reagan when he was tapped for VP. GHW got it right when he called tickle-down voodoo economics ... GHW also caved to the anti-choice crowd; he comes from a family that was a staunch supporter of Planned Parenthood: Prescott Bush, father of George H. W. Bush (Bush 1) and grandfather of Bush 2 was the treasurer of Planned Parenthood when it launched its first national fundraising campaign in 1947.

His father is secret service and they still need to raise money for his treatment. Meanwhile, George H. W. Bush. and his wife pay nothing toward their healthcare. Welcome to the land of rich receive everything and the poor get screwed.

    Luke 12:48 says
But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

Gods of the earth are still casting lots. While the father in heaven feeds me on earth with manna. Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.

while I dislike his politics and many decisions he made this is a great gesture. sadly however it's a sign of where he, and his party (and those on the other side of the house as well) have led this country when a family have to resort to charity and handouts to get the same level of healthcare that Canadians, Europeans and many other countries take for granted (while the US spends more on unneeded "defense" projects than any time in history)
