Christie's opponent chooses union chief as running mate

(CNN) – New Jersey State Democratic Sen. Barbara Buono, who is challenging Gov. Chris Christie in his bid for re-election, tapped a local labor boss as her running mate Monday.

Buono's pick, Milly Silva, acts as the executive vice president for New Jersey of the 1199 Service Employees International Union United Healthcare Workers East. In that role she represents 7,000 long term healthcare workers, including nursing home employees and home health aides.

A graduate of Columbia, Silva was raised in the Bronx by a single mother who was born in Puerto Rico. Her selection as Buono's running mate on the Democratic gubernatorial ticket comes as national Republicans grapple with how best to appeal to Hispanic and female voters.

Buono's campaign said that with the addition of Silva, their ticket is only the third all-female pairing from a major party to run in American history.

The latest polling in New Jersey's governor's race showed Christie with a sizeable 32-point lead over Buono. The Quinnipiac University survey, taken July 2-7, showed the incumbent Republican at 61% among registered voters, while Buono stood at 29%.

New Jersey and Virginia are the only states holding gubernatorial elections this year.

She's already losing in the polls. Why not choose a labor leader? This move will definitely remind the folks in New Jersey just how much Christie despises unions. This race just got a little more interesting.

The one thing that could turn the tide in this race would be for Christie to get into a knock down bare knuckle fight with Rand Paul while trying to position himself for a presidential run........he could end up looking bad if he is not careful and damage his popularity at home. There are signs that this may happen........so hang in there lady.

Oh please... Christie's stance on unions is well known by NJ residents, and he's still very popular. This boneheaded move on her part won't get her bupkiss.

Sorry lady but you don't stand a chance. The not that bright, obese, bully governor has it in the bag.

The students of New Jersey are $400 million dollars dumber thanks to a clerical error made on behalf of the state. As simple the error, it shows incompetence and she should attack him on it. Anything is worth a try.

  9. Downhill We Go

One only needs to look at Detroit, MI (major metro), Harrisburg, PA (city), and Woonsocket, RI (smaller city) to see that Democrats can destroy things at any level. Liberalism is a failure people – read. Look at the history and wake up !!! This is what the US will look like if you keep voting these people in...is this what you really want?

Yawn. You think we're better off with the ones who have been quite literally purchased by people like the Koch brothers or Wall Street's wealthiest bankers?

Actually, all three of those cities are textbook examples of the severe economic damage that can result because of the outsourcing manufacturing jobs. Detroit lost automotive jobs. Woonosocket lost textile jobs. Harrisburg also declined because of the loss of manufacturing jobs, as well as a declining steel industry. All three suffered the same fate, The Romney Plan.

Downhill We Go – Facts aren't on your side. Conservatism is a failed, diseased ideology that destroys the economy, and it's Liberal policies that end up cleaning up the mess of Conservatism after conservatives bury us in a hole. Trickle-down economics is the biggest scam in history, it's a proven failure, over and over again.

@true conservative, I would rather they are backed by unions than the crazy right wing bible thumping zealots or big corporations ( excuse me, people).
At least unions are for the American worker.
christie's true colors are out and will continue to come out. One good deed doesn't make up for his bulliness of past, present and future. A repug doesn't change it's anti women spots or anything he s against.
