Debt ceiling awaits Congress after summer break

New York (CNNMoney) - It's not negotiable: Congress will have to soon raise the debt ceiling. The only question is when.

On Wednesday, the Treasury Department said again that it can continue to pay the country's bills in full without breaching the legal limit on borrowing until sometime after Labor Day.

State Rep. Mike Bost rants to protect rules, constitution and children

(CNN) - Illinois State Rep. Mike Bost, a Republican, is known for his spirited rants on the General Assembly floor, which have gone viral on YouTube. Bost spoke to CNN's Kate Bolduan about running for U.S. Congress in Illinois, what sets him off, and why Congress may "need more passion."

"There are only about two things that really bother me," Bost said on CNN's "New Day." "When I'm working in the General Assembly and someone just violates the rules and therefore takes those rules away from my constituents and my ability to defend my constituents and work on certain pieces of legislations, that's a problem."

Abortion rights supporters return cookies from N.C. governor

Updated at 9:49 a.m. ET on 7/31

(CNN) – "Incredibly bizarre" is not the typical response to a plate of chocolate chip cookies, particularly when the treats are delivered personally by a state's governor.

But that's how Irene Godinez, director of public affairs for Planned Parenthood Health Systems Action Fund, describes the moment North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory handed the baked goods to a woman staked outside his home, protesting the controversial abortion bill McCrory signed into law earlier this week.

List designates Washington's most beautiful people

(CNN) - Sen. Jeff Flake is having a good year: He was sworn into the Senate. He spent a week marooned on a deserted island with his sons. And now the Republican is considered one of the 50 most beautiful people in the Beltway.

The Washington news outlet The Hill published its tenth annual list on Wednesday. The publication notes Flake's famously youthful appearance and healthy lifestyle choices - he's known for his love for spear fishing, sometimes without a shirt - as well as his participation in the so-called Gang of Eight, a bipartisan group of senators that led to the passage of immigration reform this year in the Senate.

FIRST ON CNN: New FBI director to face GOP heat for Benghazi investigation

Washington (CNN) - Labeling the Obama administration's investigation of the September 2012 Benghazi attacks "simply unacceptable," eight Republican lawmakers are demanding more aggressive steps from the new FBI Director James Comey and asking that he brief Congress within 30 days.

"It has been more than 10 months since the attacks," the GOP lawmakers said in a draft of a letter to Comey obtained by CNN. "We appear to be no closer to knowing who was responsible today than we were in the early weeks following the attack. This is simply unacceptable."

CNN: What's next for Bradley Manning? Prison time could add up for convicted leaker
The sentencing hearing for Pfc. Bradley Manning begins Wednesday, and in the coming days, the famed leaker will find out how much time he will serve behind bars. It could be years or decades. Judge Col. Denise Lind spared him the certainty of spending his entire life in jail Tuesday, when she acquitted him of the most grievous charge of aiding the enemy. Had she convicted him of that one charge, he could have spent life in prison without possibility of parole. But Manning was found guilty of 20 other charges under the Espionage Act. Twelve of them carry maximum sentences of 10 years each in prison.
