(CNN) – Former President George W. Bush, 67, underwent a procedure Tuesday morning to have a stent placed in his heart one day after a blockage was discovered in an artery, according to a statement from his office.
In the statement released by Bush's spokesman, the procedure was "performed successfully," without complication, at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.
"President Bush is in high spirits, eager to return home tomorrow and resume his normal schedule on Thursday. He is grateful to the skilled medical professionals who have cared for him," the statement read.
The blockage was found during Bush's annual physical examination at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas on Monday.
"He thanks his family, friends, and fellow citizens for their prayers and well wishes. And he encourages us all to get our regular check-ups," the statement continued.
The 43rd president was known for having relatively good health during his tenure at the White House. For exercise, he was an active runner and frequently rode his mountain bike.
According to his 2006 annual exam, his medical history at the time showed no signs of hypertension or stroke, and he had 'low' to 'very low' coronary artery disease risk profile with a favorable family medical history and absence of modifiable risk factors.
The report also stated he had "minimal/mild" coronary artery calcification, a fairly common sign of early artery disease in which the lining of aortic wall becomes inflamed and plaque starts to build up over time. Calcium deposits begin to form in the artery wall.
Bush's statement Tuesday did not release details on whether his artery blockage was related to his past medical history.
Also, the White House announced in August 2007 that Bush was treated the year prior for Lyme disease. A White House spokesman at the time told CNN that it is "not uncommon" for Bush to get tick bites during his bike rides.
Lyme disease can be transmitted through the bite of a tick that carries the disease. The problem had been resolved, with no re-occurrence and no other symptoms, the White House said six years ago.
His 2007 physical exam also reported bouts of mild vertigo, but it did not interfere with his work.
Liekable guy, horrible, HORRIBLE president.
I see they found the blockage in time...
Good that he had his government provided healthcare.
I'm not sure what I wish him...
I am just appalled at some of these hateful comments. No wonder our country is falling apart. Shame on all of you. What's happened to compassion for our fellow man?
The rethugs destroyed our compassion with their 3+ decade war against the middle class. And as the bible says: as you sow so shall you reap .
Speedy recovery, Mr. President.
Hi Linda...you're appalled? You mean like most of us are appalled at the treatment of our sitting President. Join the club. The hatred spewed on Obama is unprecedented. Though I am not a fan of Bush by any means, I never disrespected the office while he was in it like is happening now. It's embarrassing for our Country the way Obama has been treated and I suspect you know that. Bush did more damage to this country and we are still paying for his two unfunded wars. So why the bashing? I kind of get that at this point.
Receiving an alert on my phone that President George W. Bush underwent a heart procedure woke me up and compelled me to check on his status. It seems as if he is doing well. Get well Mr. President! I hope to one day have the honor and privilege to meet you and shake your hand and thank you for your service. Much respect and admiration for 43!
Get well Mr. President.
Worst president in the history of the world. I still hope he recovers though.
Maybe in a few more decades we will have recovered from his truly disastrous presidency.
he was a great President...a REAL president...looked after the country. not like this bozo......5 yrs of lies, speeches, deceit and no improvement...just what the O voters deserve. BHO blamed bush for the recesion...normal intelligent people knew that was a lie...and he has been milking it since
You folks wanted Zero, you got him.
"President Bush is in high spirits, eager to return home tomorrow and resume his normal schedule "
What does he do, besides hide from public?
My god, this man jogged every day during his presidency and had a resting heart rate of 43 bpm. If that didn't help him, then I'm doomed.
Fell better soon, Mr. President.
I am sure he has top notch doctors looking after him unlike Joe Blow in rural USA who only has Doc Adams with his little black bag for his regular checkup...Its sad all americans don't have the same access to quality healthcare as he enjoys... Betcha he won't pay a dime either.
All I can say to those of you that think he did a wonderful job as President. Look at the lives lost and debt incurred in two worthless wars and oh.........How much did you lose in your retirement accounts at the end of his Presidency? Now look at what you have now after 5 years with Obama. Mine has almost doubled and I bet that goes for most of you. So quit defending Bush.
There are far more hateful posts from conservatives on this thread than from liberals.
Just remember that Bush's approval rating is higher than Obama's right now.
That should read......8 yrs of lies, speeches, deceit and wholesale destruction of the nation...and nobody on the right said squat about it.
Didnt know he had a heart... OOPS that was Cheney
One more thing.....sure must be nice to have fully funded for life health insurance paid for on the backs of taxpayers. The rest of us should be so lucky. If only Bush had of pushed for single payer health insurance instead of Obama...we'd have it by now.
My 72 year old wife, who previously has had two (2) heart attacks and triple bypass surgery, recently went to the hospital for an angioplasty (stents) and was treated and released the same day. Why is it medically necessary for Bush to be confined as an inpatient for this procedure and not my 72 year old wife?
She had stent placement and was discharged the same day? Very unlikely. It is standard of care to undergo an overnight observation. This is likely the same course the Mr. Bush had.
Hater Demo-rats... Speedy recovery, Mr. President.
George W. Bush was the worst president in the history of the United States PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"47% comment was so taken out of context.....Romney would have had the capable members of the 47% working again if the press and Carters grandson had not smeared and twisted his every comment"
It was in no way taken out of context. The ENTIRE speech was made available and it was quite clear what he was saying.
An extremely effective treatment.
Heal well and thrive, Mr. Bush!
