Obama takes questions on housing in Zillow chat

New York (CNNMoney) – Fresh off a speech in Phoenix in which he outlined his vision for the housing market, President Obama took to the web Wednesday to answer questions from Americans wondering what the government can do to help.

Taking questions submitted online in an event live-streamed in cooperation with real estate site Zillow, Obama reiterated in broad terms his support for scaling down government-backed housing finance firms Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, a key theme of his speech in Phoenix on Tuesday.

for years and years and years the republicans tried to reel in and control these two democrat favorites and the democrats fought them tooth and nail. and then they had a large hand in the 2008 financial collapse and now the democrats and obama have now seen the light, unfortunately 5 years and trillions of dollars too late. i wonder... will obama be sending thank you cards to george bush and the republicans for this 'new idea'????

Beware of anything that Obama wants..........he wants to transform America into something totally different, from a free country.

" they had a large hand in the 2008 financial collapse"

That's a big myth. The reason the mortgages were called "subprime" is because they did not meet the federal requirements for Fannie and Freddie to make them as loans. In other words, Fannie and Freddie didn't make most of the mortgages that were involved because THEY COULDN'T. It was almost exclusively mortgages from private companies. You may now return to your regularly scheduled delusion.

Here's a thought. Instead of going on late night talk shows where the host is a campaign donor or talking on tightly controlled internet chat rooms, try facing an actual press conference once in a while. What a waste of a president.

And the obsession with race continues from Mr. Sniffit. You are so all consumed with race that I believe I must be correct in my assessment that you have some latent racism inside of you. There can be no other explanation. Earlier you said that the only reason Putin doesn't like Obama is because he is black (which he isn't, by the way. He's a white-African American). Man, you really need to see a psychiatrist. You must really hate yourself (or probably love yourself since you harbor such feelings of hate and can't act on them).

By the mid-90’s newspapers and financial advisors were encouraging bad credit customers with low wages to apply for loans with the help of ACORN and Self Help. Earlier this year Martin Eakes, founder of Self Help and Center for Responsible Lending President, explained, “By offering mortgages to borrowers with battered or bad credit, Self-Help was, in fact, ‘one of the earliest subprime lenders in the nation.”

Today, ACORN and Self Help—through the Center for Responsible Lending—are at it again. Even though the burden from loans to high-risk, low-income borrowers bankrupted Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, ACORN and CRL joined forces in an effort to obtain a piece of the $700 billion bailout pie.

Over the past two decades ACORN and the Center for Responsible Lending have been in aggressive pursuit of the same goal: obtaining mortgages for individuals regardless of their ability to carry the debt. Now taxpayers are the ones footing the bill. Given this track record and ACORN’s pattern of fraudulent behavior, one can only hope that Congress won’t make the same mistake again

Here's a better idea than that. How about going to a tightly controlled cable television network, wholly owned and operated by a major conservative donor, and getting a job as political analyst. Now you can host phony discussions about whatever issues you want to talk about, irregardless of whether the talking points are true or not. Huh? Watcha think? Pretty good, huh?

talk about delusion, you have mastered it with that reply. fannie mae and freddie bought up so many subprime mortgages they essentially went under, except the federal government pumped hundreds of billions into them to keep them afloat. the republicans had been warning about this for years and bush even tried to get it stopped but fannie mae and freddie mac were democrat darlings. barney frank especially protected them and even said there was no problem just months before they collapsed. they also contributed heavily to democrats and obama. great to keep the politcians off your back.

please do some homework before you start posting obvious lies.

Just sayin to answer your question. No he won't send a thank you card, because now that Obama has stated he wants it, they will just vote against it! Maybe at that time you'll see what the "party of no" means.

To put things into perspective, Sniffit was commenting on Rick McDaniel's post because Mr. McDaniel recently stated his belief that Abraham Lincoln was solely responisble for starting the Civil War. Mr McDaniel has a long history of making racially charged ( and sometimes patently wrong) comments. Just thought I would mention that.

Rick McDaniel, are you commenting on the correct stories? If so, can you give us 3 examples of how Obama wants to transform this country into anything but a free country? I think we are all confused with your comments, maybe some specifics could clear things up.

That is completely false. Try a web search for The American Dream Downpayment Initiative (ADDI), which was passed by a Republican controlled Congress, and signed into law on December 16, 2003 by President George W. Bush.

Thanks. Tom doesn't generally pay enough attention to his surroundings to have understood my reference to Rick's previous silliness. He's so focused on trying to one-up me that he engages in some pretty fun to watch mental contortions and cognitive dissonance though, so the decision has been made to egg him on.

@TP (wow, you have the same initials as the TEA Party! )

You are still conflating the two. It is a state's rights issue vs a federal issue. Plain and simple. Mass had every right to do that and it would be extremely consistent to be against it for the federal govt to apply the same law. You are talking apples and oranges. The only similarity is that they both are about health insurance and they both ignore healthcare. The big irony is that the big winner in this was the big bad health insurance companies. Certainly, we the people were not winners here.
    *****************
So, let's get this straight: your entire argument against the ACA rests on the same logic that John C Calhoun used to justify slavery. You did say it was a state's right's issue, correct? Were you aware that all of the state's rights arguement trace their lineage back to that era? Perhaps you need to phrase it differently?

Actually, he does it with most of his comments. I promise you he has real deep seated issues that I don't think he even recognizes. He brings race in to every single discussion with regards to President Obama and makes assumptions about points I make and brings race into it. The best one was when I was talking about the voter registration laws and said they are capable enough to get an ID; his response was that I thought they were lazy in not getting an ID when I never made any such reference nor any point remotely near what his assumption was. He has the soft bigotry of low expectations, as well, which could be the most racist part of him. He needs help. Perhaps he should go to the class with Riley Cooper.
